Lower Tier Allies When Queuing Support?

After spending most of the season playing Jungle (with the occasional Mid or Top), I've started queuing as support recently to try and relearn the role in Normal Draft. I've been waffling on my secondary role for a while now and I've been enjoying support when I'm autofilled into it, so I figured I would try it out.

However, I have been finding that I have been getting matched with lower tier players (Silver, Bronze and even pre-30s) in a lot of my normal games. Considering I typically play with Platinum to Diamond players and have for well over a year, this seems rather odd.

I've never run into this issue when queuing for any other role (or been autofilled as support), so it seems odd that it is happening so frequently when I queue as support. I've even tried queuing as my normal roles (Jungle/Mid) and I'm back with my appropriate MMR bracket.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Is there just a massive dearth of support players such that ones from higher MMR brackets must be taken down to fill spots?
