@Riot Time-gating?

There is a major issue with time-gating on new players. This is a much bigger issues since autofill was added. Due to the fact that you can wind up stuck in any role from autofill, you need to have runes for every role to play in ranked without a chance of winding up with runes that don't work. The amount of runes you are going to need is roughly 40,000 IP. If you play an hour a day, that is roughly 4 months. There is additional gating that stops new players from playing certain champions. If you want to play a champion like Corki, you probably need mixed penetration runes. Between the 820 marks, and 2050 quints, it will cost you 13,530 IP for the runes for a mixed champion. If you're a new player you should probably just avoid Corki all together, as he would cost you about a month of IP. This is forgetting any chance that players might choose to buy rune pages or champions with IP.

Riot seems to want people to play a variety of roles and champions so that autofill works. Well it isn't working for anyone who hasn't played half a year for runes. There isn't any need to keep new players doing bad because they lack the base stats of everyone else long after hitting ranked.

Been playing since Season 1 and I still don't have all the champions.

T2 Runes are a temporary fix, since they're all 1IP. But Rito is working on a rune system rework to come sometime later

time gating to them is simply investing time, effort and sometimes money into the game, they want people to invest so much time they become addicted.

How are people going to get addicted when they're playing games skewed against them for 4 months?

wanting to get better shit, champions etc

People already can spend months of IP on champs without coming near them all... Having no runes just makes people lose their ass off and quit.

you can't really say everyone "lose their ass off and quit", League has become a fad type phenomenon, alot of people have accounts, and new players continue to funnel in to get accounts, its the biggest game on the planet (arguably) and the biggest game thats streamed on Twitch 95% of the time, which is one of the largest and and most popular game 'streaming' website.

The game is everywhere and when people watch a stream of LoL and see they following, they see cool kills or whatever, and memes and they want to experience the same stuff, so they do and 'suffer' until they get there, Riot has been talking about revamping the garbage rune system anyway.

It definitely turns away some new players... First time I made an account I quit because I was getting crushed and I realized that it would take me about half a year to get runes at that point...

yea definitely, some people leave, and honestly I would have too if I wasn't spoiled and had money at my disposal.

yeah, just like every single other game out there no matter how popular or great it is also has things to turn away new players. New players first concern should be to learn the basics of the game and improve not getting runes and knowing what to do and which ones to get. Hell you can get by with getting 2 very generic rune pages, one for AD and for AP and both runes use half of the runes of the other so as soon as you get your yellows and blues you don't have to worry about them ever again and focus on your red and quints to get some runes focused on AD or AP. You really can get by with that for a long time until you get a decent champion roster since afterwards you can just get specialized rune pages for each champion you enjoy.
