Replays retrocompatibility

The replay device is very useful to see the mistakes we had made, but i've just noticed an issue. If we download a new patch, we're then not able to watch replays from another patch. It means we can't see replays olders than 1-2 months as a maximum. This constraint really is in opposition to the replay concept. If implementing retrocompatibility (or not implementing non-retrocompatibility) doesn't imply a lot of work, it would be great to add it.

This has been a well-known fact for a while. I honestly don't know why replays work like this, maybe a Rioter will give some clarification if we're lucky. But it's worked like that (I think) forever so I don't expect it to change. Also, people generally play more than 20 games per patch, and unless you play less than that it doesn't effect you.

Yeah well don't expect RIOT to give a shit. They're as retarded as it comes, when it comes to implementation. They always are half-unfinished. There used to be some 3rd party replay systems that did a better job of tackling this problem.

LolReplay (LolReplay 2) suffered from this problem, too, unless you had the program installed at the time the replay was made, I think (foggy memory). They would download something to make the replay work with the current client by providing old resource files that the replay would call on.

BaronReplays made the best attempt. They would allow you to download an ENTIRE copy of a specific version of the game, I think (or else they would download resource files to feed into a copy of the executable from that time). Anyway, theirs worked, and it worked well, until the project just up and disappeared. RIOT hates their community so much that they go after these third-party developers with legal threats and then provide their own extremely shitty native experience, after killing those projects. This is a long-standing pattern at RIOT.

An alternate explanation is that these projects' developers did one of two things:

  1. Got sick of keeping up with the Kardashians (RIOT's bullshit patches, obfuscation of their code, and changes in the Spectator mode playback API/system).
  2. Got sick of League altogether and left for a game with more respect for its community (and not just its community's wallets).

I started League back in the days when you could still spectate high elo players by clicking on a featured match on the landing screen after logging in. Really wish RIOT would go back to the spirit and energy they had back then. They went steadily downhill after Season 2 or 3. The last season finally brought back the ability to solo carry a game with high risk/high reward decision making (if it pays off), making people desperate to dominate their enemies by killing them, but they've ruined their community so badly that nobody that I know and care about plays this game any more.

It's a dead game...

Leaving a trail of dead replay systems in its wake.

Op.gg used to provide replays. You used to be able to launch spectator mode from a few websites that would host replays and live games. There was even an entire website dedicated to providing you a download of a replay file after the game. RIOT just dragged their feet so badly on including a replay system, and then didn't even give it a whole-hearted shot when they made one, that there's just no forgiving them for it. They waited so long that there was no excitement when it even came out. It was just sort of like "yeah, whatever, you finally put that billion dollars to work doing something that was actually necessary a billion dollars ago. Woo." I mean, seriously, 7 years RITO???
