I have a DJ Sona skin and I like playing her, but people say that's she far too squishy (which is the reason for most of my Sona losses) but some say that she has spammable buffs and would be a really good support for zoning and poking. I want to make sure that the DJ Sona skin is really worth it for playing a champ for season 5, and if it's not I would refund it to buy more skins and to buy a Harrowing skin for the Harrowing sale.
Sona is currently the weakest champ in the support class if not in the entire game. She has the lowest base damage and AD of all supports and the 2nd lowest potential after Braum. Her heal is the weakest and most expensive in the game and her shield is the weakest and shortest-duration amongst supports, both halves by huge margins. She's the only support with a ranged spell less than 550 units, in which she has a grand total of THREE that are an impossibly low 350 each. She's the 2nd-sqishiest support just after Zyra, but despite this is the only support without hard CC pre-6 and is trapped in the lowest MS tier. Her ult is one of the weakest amongst CC ults and has one of the longest CDs of support ults.
If patch 4.13 had never occurred, I would've gladly bought DJ myself. As she is right now, there's no logical reason to EVER play her, especially while Nami and Bard remain superior carbon copies of her. Both of them have the same kit, feel and playstyle of Sona, but can do literally everything she does, but far better.
I'm 15W / 20L with Sona. In those games I am 129/303/494 with a (K+A)/D of 2. I can usually figure out by the three minute mark how cautious I need to play (have they tried killing me every time I use Q).
Compared to other supports, Sona feels like she does so little to help her ADC since her W is so expensive and will OOM you to uselessness in seconds. Your poke is weak but reliable compared to other supports. Without the follow up AA, Q is not that devastating. Like others have said, she works well with aggressive ADC that gives enough lane pressure for Sona to augment. She can't pressure a lane by herself (well, maybe if the enemy is afraid or passive, she can).
In my experience, Sona is a mid game champ. Once she has rank 3 Q and Sheen (after Sightstone), she can severely punish out of position squishies. I'd say at this point, even if my ADC has been pushed under tower all game, I will start being stupid aggressive because I can chunk an ADC down to half health fast. If the support isn't a tank, I can do the same to them. Sure, the ADC can nearly flat line Sona in the same time frame, but if they go after Sona, her ADC will probably get a double. If they focus her ADC, Sona is quite capable of getting a double on her own. If she opens with her R, she might even get away without taking any damage at all.
I don't think Sona will be very viable at a high level of play. I have never been able to shut down a snowball with her the way I can with Janna or Soraka. I imagine more experienced players would know how easy it is to out trade Sona's early game, pushing back her mid game to the point of irrelevance.
But I don't know why people say the only thing she has is her ult in the late game. A LichBane/DeathCap Sona hitting any squishie with R/Q/AA is instant death. I've knocked a Vayne to 1/4 health without using Sona's ult. ADC don't seem to be in the habit of building MR. I had a game (43 min loss) where Sona was putting out 800 dmg a minute. I can't offer that sort of damage with other supports, mostly because there is so much reliable damage in Sona's kit. The only other "support" that I can think of that could effortlessly match this would be Annie.
And as for Sona mid... I'm a bit too timid to try that out. I'd do a Braum/Sona duo with Yasuo (AD) mid before trying to shoulder the role of APC. Sona feels like such an easy target for ganks and doesn't get any less squishy in a 1v1 against a standard mid laner.
Take her mid and go full AP, it's fun and it may surprise you what she can do If you pick support Sona you are going to have the most boring experience in your life as you realize that most of her power is invisible and your skills do literally nothing after level 10 outside of ult

Sona is good right now, Sona's players suck most of the time right now. She is a really pain in laning phase even if played incorrectly.
Sona players fall off hard when it's time to roam, ward and teamfights. She can do great things in fight and travel somewhat safely due to her speed. But she is a one shot killed. I dont like Sona.
As long as you know how to mash keyboard and how to rift click you're fine
I like Sona for two ADCs: Kalista and Vayne. You have a lot of wombo potential with Kalista; her W passive is easy to proc while you're poking away and her ult + your ult is a good 3 seconds of CC if you time it properly. For Vayne, she can actually help peel for you if it's needed. Even if they focus you and you die, Vayne is probably going to walk away with a double anyway. :P

Looks pretty decent to me.
In the grand scheme of things, current meta is rather unfavorable for her in competitive: Sona is not that great in lane swaps, as she is a bad early roamer, and doesn't help much in killing an enemy under turret early on either.
However, in most of solo queue, you're not going to see a lane swap, and Sona can be pretty crushing in a 2vs2 lane - but only if the enemy has no reliable means of getting her (see match-up section - she crushes things like Bard, Tahm Kench, Taric, but gets crushed by the Leonas and Blitzcranks of the world).
She's alright. If you like the skin, like playing Sona, and got the skin on discount you should keep it. Otherwise you should refund it.
Pick what you like... unless your team really needs a tank, you don't have to go full damage on sona support, just 1 ap item and ~2 tank items works just fine on her, she's not that squishy when you start building her according to what kind of damage the enemy deals :l
the riot balancing team is naturally capable of making errors...they are human. But i tihnk they do a pretty good job overall, and every champion is rather playable. some are better in certain compositions or versus certain compositions, but nothing is ever really 'trash'. Anyone who feels otherwise should jsut go take their job, and if they are too scared to, or discovered to be unqualified, they shoudl basically stfu. Never listen to the peanut gallery opinion about things. Not about lol champs, not about religion, communism, etc. Nothing.
A good sona will always make her work.. She can really fuck shit up. The only downside with sona as she has an ulti that for some reason scares your own teamates more than the enemy.
My buddy use to main her and like 80% of the time he ulti'd our team would not follow up or legit turn away lol. 
But yeah

She is good if you build her with the supportish AP items and know how to position properly.
I see a lot of ppl asking if XXXX Champ is good or bad. I think the problem is that a lot of ppl dont know how to adjust what they are building for the team they are fighting. They build the same thing EVERY game. Learn how to build to counter the damage on the other team. Sona is my main. I love melting ppl while healing/buffing my team and the Ult can turn a team fight so fast..
