Suggestion: team chat during load screen

Strife419··92 votes·3,471 views

I was surprised to find zero discussions about implementing chat during the load screen. I feel this is the largest disconnect in the game; the champ select has little time for strategy, then on the load screen you have all this information but no way to chat, then the game starts and there is no time for pre-game strategy. No chat on the load screen, is an interruption that greatly effects the overall communication of the games team play.

I can't imagine chat would use too much system resources. Thoughts anyone?

I know some will say just use voip, and I do, but that's not the point. The point is, riot's not going to implement voip and they shouldn't, but they should offer an un-interrupted team chat experience.

I think the reason you don't see any mention of it is because it's been suggested over and over without going anywhere. I don't think anyone's against it, it's just not a priority.

Only chat in your own team.... no /all plz There's only 10 second before everyone can move freely, so it wouldn't build effective decision, and lane swap decision making (one time we have a Jarvan top vs Vlad, while a Yasuo mid vs Pantheon, if Yas and J4 swap lane it would be so much more comfortable)

I have actually thought of this several times, it would help with pregame plans, invades. Plus it'll give me something to do while someones potato is loading.

I always thought that the loading screen was fully dedicated to loading everyone's assets and connections. Implementing a team chat would probably slow that down significantly.

I'm not sure what if anything is being downloaded during that loading screen. It could be mostly notifying when other people are ready, in which case a few packets of text wouldn't make a big difference. If there is a large amount of data they are downloading, then a few characters of text will not increase the traffic significantly.

Significantly? Come one Is a chat, it doesn’t require that much memory Is just a stupid chat.

Seems you didn't understand... I wrote "a few characters of text will NOT increase the traffic significantly." So, there wont be increased traffic which means that there won't be much extra data downloading which means they should implement chat during loading screen which is what you're saying.

This has come up before and riot has explicitly explained they can't do this.

First of all it would make loading times. Lot longer. Some people can barely get league to load on their computer, chat during the loading g would completely fuck them.

A possible solution could be to. It close the client when the gsme starts. You can still chat in your client to your team, and the gsme loads in the background. Then once it's loaded it minimizes the clirnt and opens the actual gsme.

Great idea pal, but it cannot be implemented currently. Sorry

Team chat in loading screen may help people stay more active. I personally like the idea.

Yes, and also having an opportunity to plan the who, what and where of strategy would make the games go more smoothly. It would reduce the bickering and arguments ans make the whole experience more enjoyable.

Yet another way that the game favors voice comms.

Don't worry, it'll come with the new client.™

The team priorities will become skewed once that one person talks and they turn out to be female...

oh noes!

But in all seriousness, I'd rather not find out my four team mates are under the age of 15.

Edit: lol I just realized you meant text chat, not voice chat. In that case I'm all for it.

Riot tried this and they said it literally broke the game. So unless they rewrite a big chunk of their engine this wont happen.

When did they try it?

+1 I support this idea for all of the OP's reasons. I'm no software developer so I can't make any calls as to how hard this would be to implement but I approve of the idea nonetheless.

FFS please... Possibly with the next client? Maybe?

It would be cool but all what i imagine is that the toplaner and the enemy one flaming each other and some sht like that

  1. Why only the toplaners? they're equally likely to flame as everyone else.
  2. It's a team chat thing. For discussing strategies and stuff which you can't do in champion select as thats all chat.

Chat among your own team...

There is a solution, but it require a condition: playing with people on your friendslist.

Because if you play premade, you can Alt+Tab out of the ingame window, open the client (red icon down to the right on your taskbar; systray), open it, make a chat room, and invite your premades to it.

Or even do all this before queing up to save time.

I mean it's not a bad idea but I think it would be hard to implement. The fact that the actual game is a different program from the initial client has always been a problem, and the loading screen is tricky because it's the transition point between those two programs.

Mogarl1 votes

Maybe we'll get it at some point after they release the new client?

dswheeltech1 votes

I'd thoroughly enjoy a team chat in the loading screen, because you can discuss masteries, and sums, and then based off of who you're going against you can discuss who to gank

Maximus Paine1 votes

Yes. We need it to plan, which is seldom done, and we're just sitting there waiting. :-)

dunkeroni1 votes

Can't be done, I'm afraid. At least not in a stable sense.

Keep in mind that the "Play Loop" as it's called is a completely separate program from the client and champ select. The loading screen exists because the game is still setting up the best peer-to-peer network arrangement to benefit all players, and all of them have to load up the program and verify connection to the system. If Riot was to add chat to the load screen, then while the network was configuring for that game, the game would also have to connect separately to the client server for chat and would have to transfer that info to the game servers when the game started if you wanted the chat to be persistent.

Riot has actually done a lot of interesting things in terms of connectivity for high-speed gaming, and the only reason the loading screen exists is that not all players are reliably connected at the same time when it starts, which would make chat pretty hard.

Why not try Curse or Discord?

Why not try Curse or Discord?

It can be done, it's a matter of wanting to do it depending on the perceived benefits vs the effort involved. If they are different programs, one can remain open for chat and when the game is ready a message can notify "Game ready. Please continue chat in game. Now closing..."

Other comm programs are fine, if everybody had them installed or were signed up, etc. There should be a standard default and it should be provided by the client everybody is using.

Do you even pay attention to your loading screen? Most load screens I have seen lasted 10 seconds or less. Not even time enough to grab a cup of coffee. If it were implemented it would be a wasted effort unless you deliberately down-clock your computer. This idea needs to be ignored, and forgotten. Besides, it would just be another excuse to flame somebody.

SirEvix1 votes

Do you even play lol? How is your loading screen 10 sec? Mine is like 5 minutes lol

Pillow Meister1 votes

I really wouldn't mind this, but I guess the only way would be alternative programs and having a pre constructed team.

Is that too much to ask? This thing haz 195 upvotes Come on riot!!! You have ALL the reasons to implement this, If not building strategys Just talk to the other team and have fun The loading time is too long Why punish us like that? xD
