Okay so my friend was Silver 5 this season, and dropped to Bronze 1 after losing a few games... I thought you couldn't drop from Silver V once you're in it? Was i wrong the whole time or is this new from last Season. Please enlighten me.

I think what you might be thinking of is called point decay. If you go inactive for long enough, you steadily lose league points. This is only in Platinum and higher.

To drop from a division, one of two things has to happen:

A) Your friend won a game within the league (rising from 0 LP to ## LP) and then dropped back down to 0 LP, and then lost another game.

B) Your friend lost so many games in a row without winning one that their mmr dropped to low to be in the division.

Your friend lost more than a "FEW" games. His MMR had to be what is considered at riot the b5 level to drop that far from losing games.

The drop from a metal rank by having the MMR of the lowest div in the that rank. So in your freinds case he was sliver but did so badly that his MMR dropped to B5 level. So the system took him down since he was not qualified for his rank.

Your friend achieved almost the impossible dropping from s5 to b1.

You can always drop from one league to another by losing enough games.

You can't fall from Bronze-Gold from inactivity decay though.
