Alright dude, here is my tip to you

Don't get thresh. He actually requires quite a bit of skill to do well with and there is a very large amount of things that you must learn as you play thresh.

Get Braum. Braum is just an amazing support in general with great engage with his ult and can save his team mates by jumping to them and shielding them from damage. Braum is a better support for those who aren't the best at the role as he is very simple, and extremely forgiving as you just build pure tanky with him as his q damage scales with your health. So just work for Braum, and BRAUM WILL BE THERE. Besides, nothing like going against a Varus or Ezreal and blocking every ability they fire. XD

I am not saying Thresh is a bad support, he is actually one of the best. I play him myself, although, I prefer Braum and recommend him to newer players over braum as Thresh takes more skill and has a lot more to him as a champion that can be hard to comprehend at first. Thresh is great, but Braum is a better support for those who just don't want to have to play 10-20 games with a champion before doing learning how to play that champion well.
