You can improve in normal draft as much as you can in ranked

Hello. I need your opinions and maybe even by Riot.

A friend of mine, a good player (diamond 3) told me once "normals are for fun, rankeds are to improve yourself".

And I was like: No. Rankeds are fun too and normals are to improve yourself, too. Both are 100% the same game modes, exapt the other one gives you prices (skin) and borders.

He is convinced you cannot improve in normals at all.

But I feel I almost only play normals and I am improveing.

Am I wrong or right?

I disagree with you, and I have a very good reason why.

When you're playing a normal, you're not under any pressure. If you lose, it's no problem. There is nothing at stake at all. Since there is nothing at stake and no pressure, you're playing without stress. When you're under stress, your body is producing adrenaline to help your reflexes and cognitive functions. You're not playing under the same set of conditions as you are when you're playing normals vs ranked, which includes playing against balanced teams of similar minded and skilled players.

Sure, you can improve in normals.

Just don't get upset when your teammates are learning a new champion or chasing kills because they find it more fun than pushing towers.

As long as you aren't tilted or otherwise a blockhead, you will learn from every single game, almost no matter what. The only exceptions are utterly stomping your enemy, getting utterly stomped quickly, and playing any of the Bots modes.

Wait, people actually have fun in Ranked?

I think that just about every mode - bots, Normals, ARAM and Ranked - you can learn from. Bots helps you learn new champions in a general respect, ARAM helps you get acclimatized to those Champions in fast-paced impulse-thinking skirmishes and fights, Normals helps you with a lot of stuff that I can't really list, and then Ranked is like taking all that you've learned in the other modes to a whetstone and refining it all.

That's my thinking of it, anyway.

You can improve in normals same as in rankeds

If that is the question then no you cannot. You can improve in normals to a decent level (game knowledge wise), but you cannot obtain the same level of skill just playing in normals. Eventually in ranked it comes down to the minut details and you simply won't face other players in normals that will challenge your abilities to that level.

Any bit of gameplay experience helps you improve, even the RGM's help you improve. Your friend seems to not realize that having fun and improving aren't mutually exclusive.
