League of Legends Ranked is turning into a game of chance.

I am Madlife··111 votes·7,467 views

To start of this post, I do not mean to rant, though it might happen, as well as I do not mean to say that League doesn't take skill, because it does, but there are many situations of Ranked Solo Q or Duo Q that has a large amount of chance in the game.

I am not talking about chance as in someone getting a lucky crit on you, but more of your teammates, and hoping that the dice rolled a good team for you. This is not me talking about having a team to carry you, but more a team that will listen, and work together, or at the very least, try.

This is the biggest thing that I see happening in Solo Q, of most Elo's, as I've played in Low Master, Mid Diamond, Low Diamond-High plat (One of the worst), Low plat - High gold, Low Gold - high silver, Mid Silver (Another bad one), and bronze. (Still bad, but able to carry).

Some people wont agree with me on the way I have pointed this out, and that is fine. This is my opinion. But what I have seen, is my evidence for why I am putting this up there. Now, let me get to my main point of this conversation. Ranked is turning into a game of chance.

The game has a new challenge now. Not beating your opponent, working together to get objectives, and winning, but instead it's come to making sure that your team doesn't rage at each other over a kill, helping them and agreeing with them most of the time so they feel like they are a big factor of the game (even though most of the time they are not), and overall babysitting your own team, so you have a slight chance of winning. Though, that is not to say that sometimes you get the team that works through all the problems, and are naturally all trying in the game. Those are the teams that should be in almost all of our games, but League has been taken to a level where people feel the need to try their hardest to win, instead of having fun and working as a team. Instead of thinking to climb the ranks, think to get better. That is, in my opinion, what ranked was about. To see how good you are, to place you in a division that the game thinks you deserve, and then for you to work on your skills to improve and win with your teammates.

But the problem is, there is more and more people that are taking the game to a more serious level, which is not bad, until they express their emotions in the form of Toxicity. Now that word has been thrown around a lot, and people know of it much to well, but most people say "oh, im on tilt" for one of their reasons of expressing this kind of anger. This is true for some, but not true for all, and for all I believe that there is a way to solve that. Don't let the game take over your mind. As hard as it is not to rage at people in-game for going 0-17 as yasuo, or running in 1v5 thinking their gosu when they play vayne, instead there are tips that you can do to stop that. Some include listening to relaxing music, rage OUTLOUD instead of in-game if you feel you have to vent, etc. There are videos online, and I wont get into too much detail.

But the main point of this was to say that League is turning into the roll of a dice, whether you get a team that is trying and wants to win, or a team, or even one player for that matter, that feels the need to yell at his teammates when he makes a mistake, and blames others for his lack of mechanics. Sometimes it could get even worse and lead into them leaving the game, or just intentionally feeding, which brings me up to my next point. Riot has implimented the upgraded intentional feeder detection, though I have had 3 in my past games and my team has reported them all (or so they say), but yet no action has been notified to me. Nothing has been done of my knowledge. I know that the system isn't perfect, and there are many cases, as well as everyone gets these players, but that's just the thing. Everyone shouldn't get these players. As there is someone good in the world, there usually is someone bad to counteract the balance, but I feel that people that are ruining the game for 4 other people, could simply get a ban and create another smurf to ruin more games. Sometimes it's just one game that is needed for a couple players to get the division they desire, but there are always people that want to ruin your experience in the game. An idea I had was to make it so if you do end up having an afk or an intentional feeder, the LP that you loose is either negated, or cut down by a lot, as well as if you are in promos, it counts as a blank spot, for you to have a real match and try again. This might make it too easy for players to rank up though, as I know higher elo players had to struggle with these people on their team, but just something I wanted to say.

I appologize if I was ranting, and sorry if my point wasn't clear, because I'm pretty sure 90% of you are going to get lost in my post as I rambled on, but I wanted to get this off my chest and just express my opinions.

TLDR; The game requires too much chance on if you get a troll/toxic player or not. Don't be toxic, learn how not to tilt, and if you loose with a troll/toxic player do something to your teammates that had to suffer the loss. I think that summed it up. If you have anything to say, or some suggestions on what I should put in here, please comment below.

It is a roll of the dice because Riot has been doing their damnedest to make sure full-solo carrying is nigh impossible to accomplish. At the least you will have to rely on at least 1 other person, and usually it's that 1 mistake you or he/she makes that loses the game, even though you played everything else perfectly, and the only reason you hadn't won earlier was because every other player on your team was screwing up every 3 seconds. That said I think there are too many people who have absolutely NO RESPECT FOR THEIR OPPONENTS AT ALL. For example: I was mid ez (AP) against lux. I had tear and chalice, lux had mejais. Among other things, their bot lane was winning, and I started following lux after a roam to bot. Nothing much happened so I started to suggest we all leave... Until the jungle riven comes flying in with his duo top TP to try get a 2v5 penta. Now I had no damage at this point and bot was already chunked, yet when they got fucked up by lux (she got a triple) it was my fault. And this is something I see too much. People just wander into the enemy team thinking they are bots or something idk. Then they get destroyed and wonder how.

solo q is just miserable, because the skill differences between players low diamond and below are just too broad.

newsflash pro tip newstip pro flash: SOLOQ IS FALSE ADVERTISING THAT LEADS TO TOXICITY BECAUSE ITS A TEAM GAME AND SOLOQ IS LITERALLY ANTI-TEAM IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE AS IT DOES NOT HAVE PROPER COMMUNICATION NOR SYNERGY WITH YOUR TEAMMATES.

it's worse having a troll in high plat low diamond than in bronze because at least in bronze you can solo carry.

I do agree, which is why I stated that I think. I am currently in Low Diamond, and I understand what you mean.

Not in Silver, I can't carry like I used to in bronze, it sucks because people often get placed in Silver when they start playing ranked, and then drop to Bronze. And sometimes these people are on your team.

BluePolarizer1 votes

the solution is to be better than silver.

Did you miss the post about the Diamond guy that's stuck in Silver? Was on the front page for the last 2-3 days?

The solo-carry dream is so dead. Either my whole team does well or we lose.

That's why they are bringing in the dynamic queue and updating the champion select to eliminate the issues you addressed. Yet, everyone is complain about it is beyond me.

But this doesn't solve the fact that the dynamic duo or trio can troll the game as well, or that one person that isn't premade can also afk/feed, but I do agree that the new champion select could help a lot ;)

well, for me at least it's a good upgrade, as a neutral/good player I will finally be able to go in ranked with more friend/poeple I know have the same mentality as me (team 5v5 is to restricive for that atm).

Duo was already good, but you still had the (bad) chance of having 60% of your team on the rage train, here 40% max chance is fine for me

CatSith3 votes

Riot said they had something implemented for that but didn't give specifics.

Meep Man3 votes

There is only so much you can do. Eventually it just comes down to "We have to do our best to ban people" when it comes to trolls and such.

PDE5 Inhibitors2 votes

I haven't seen any effort to ban trolls. Just ragers. Which in a lot of cases, the ragers are at least trying to win and can easily be avoided with a simple mute button.

You're too late. Ranked is already a game of chance.

I think one of the biggest issues is the "you need to carry your team to get out of low elo" myth that goes around a lot. I'm not very good so I hold my team back sometimes still, but getting out of bronze and silver at least can be done just by playing some utility and helping out the team. This isn't a fucking anime, and you aren't the fucking hero guys, so quit trying to carry the team on your back and just learn to play together k?

Westonbirt2 votes

That's probably why high silver is so toxic. It's full of try hards who feel like they picked themselves by their bootstraps (which, for the record, is an impossible task and was coined originally to ridicule the concept it represents) and therefore learned nothing about teamplay.

Lately if i really really want a win i just pick Heimerdinger for whatever lane im in mid/top and then item 1056 item 1076 item 3512 item 3060

Hard push to enemy nexus, they need 3 ppl to stop the push that early on leaving my team to 4v2 the rest of them. Meanwhile all i do is push towers untill we win the game. It is pretty lame but it works.

I cannot agree with this post more. I've been recently trying to grind out some ranked games and more often than not I feel like i'm acting as "team mom" or "team behavior counselor". I mean it's borderline depressing that more often than not what will win you a game is making sure your team actually behaves as a team.

This concept by itself supports the "role of the dice" mentality perfectly. Lets assume for the sake of the argument that the ranked system actually works as intended and places people approximately where they're supposed to be. So we can assume aside from smurfs/boosters people are around the level they should be and or climbing out of it. Nobody's skill is going to be tiers ahead of everyone else in the game so it becomes the team with the most cooperative, level headed teammates win.

Why is working together towards a common interest so hard for people to do? Is it more appealing to rage, troll, flame, etc... than to win a game? It's hard for players as a whole to truly learn from their game experience to self improve when their games are littered with variables that don't correspond with actual game-play, but rather player behavior.

Don't get me wrong, learning to work together with your teammates is a valuable skill, but when what type of players you have on your team (behavior/personality) tends to be the largest factor of winning the game, the Elo ranking system becomes inaccurate and skewed. Of course out-liars will exist, those who belong on top (Pro players, non-pro, top notch players such as Gosu); but for the people who aren't a large margin skill wise above their opponents it becomes impossible to climb without having luck on your side.

I don't know what type of system could fix these issues, but I feel as though something needs to be done to help alleviate the pains of having negative players of multiple facets on your team.

TL:DR - When it comes down to it, you do not control your teammates actions/behavior. Cross your fingers that you are paired with like-minded individuals to have a decent chance at winning.

WooBeeWoo3 votes

One of the big RNG ranked factors is when you get a team full of the same main role. When 3-4 people say they are jung or top mains its like ah dammit. So our bot lane is simply trying not to feed our mid is wrecked and our objective control getting crapped on cause the jung main adc thinks they should ward drag alone and gets caught. I'm looking forward to claiming roles BEFORE we are matched I think that will improve the situation a lot.

Borbland3 votes

That's why I personnaly think the new queue will be better. There is no luck factor involved by playing with friends.

"But then you can get carried by your firends and end up far up then you should be". Maybe, but at least we know he was doing that with friend. Right now, some people just feel like they were super lucky and get matched in good team every time and climb like that. Also, I wont need to pray anymore and hope that we wont have any troll/afk/super duper toxic ragequitter etc.

Maybe toxic 4 man premade will show up and ruin the fun for a bit (then the banhammer starts hammering), but after a while it will be ok. Also, I think a SoloQ in addition is a good idea, because it will satisfy anybody.

I appreciate a very experienced player taking the time to express himself on the boards. As a community, I think we need to communicate more at both the upper and lower echelons of ranked and normal queues. As someone who has suffered from anger issues caused by video games, I completely understand the need to either vent externally or show extreme control over your emotions. The best thing that I have found success in doing is to remain overly-optimistic in chat, openly appreciate your teammates for well executed moves, and soothing music often helps to relieve internal tension if perhaps I am not playing to the best of my abilities.

While I agree, the riot statement is along the lines of "In almost all cases, you will EVENTUALLY get to your proper ranking" The supporting comment being, (assuming you're better than where you currently are), the enemy team has 5 chances of a feeder/bad teammate and you only have 4 chances (since you are filling the fifth slot). Statistically meaning you will eventually climb based on numbers.

This being said, it's only really accurate at a large number of games, and gets more accurate the more you play, (1000+) which is a ton for a season.

So not arguing for or against, just commenting some thoughts.

ahferroin71 votes

'Eventually' is like 'Soon'. Some people get really lucky, but most do not.

Mayor Stubbs1 votes

Eventually in this case, is not like soon. it's like if you played an infinite (or very large number of games) that is when the system actually is accurate and would get you to your proper rating.

Sadly playing a large number of games almost guarantees a losing streak that just isn't your fault if you play long enough (especially in lower elos where people can play/afk/troll so badly that they outright lose you games, and not care because the stakes are so low), which has happened to pretty much everyone I know, and in most cases guarantees that they just don't play for months. There's nothing worse for video games than the feeling of impotence.

This is why I, for one, am extremely excited about season six (marksmen notwithstanding), in that I actually have friends and will (hopefully) never lose a game because of a single asshole ruining things again.

Any individual player is just as likely to feed as another. So excluding one's self from the list of feeders is skewing the win percentages in a favorable direction. Never exclude one's self from that. The only exclusion one can make is to exclude intentional trolling.

Essentially, what I'm saying is that while you may not be intentionally feeding or troll picking, you can still have a bad game or just get counter-picked hard.

Mayor Stubbs1 votes

Yea but if you're in a lower bracket than you honestly should be, you will have more good games (probably significantly more) than bad games.

The only way what you're saying would work is if you were exactly at the ranking you deserved and performed at an average level in comparison to the other players.

Ultimately, leading to [if you truly deserve to be a higher rating, you will get there] 100% statistically speaking here, talking about a large number of games. (in 99.9% of cases)

That's a very good point; que-ing with friends would resolve that issue, but that statement paired with "remove the dice entirely" assumes that you're going to be que-ing with your friends every time you want to play the game?

I mean sure if you wanted to you could but lets be honest, how many people have the ability to que with their friends every game they want to play. People have lives, work, family, etc... Assuming that you're going to be playing every single game knowing your teammates is a bit unrealistic.

People's behavior in this game isn't being fixed by a new feature in the game, it just allows individuals to circumvent the issue IF they que wih all their friends which as I stated before is simply unrealistic, especially for those who want to commit more time than their friends (not everyone's priorities match when it comes to League).

S H A Y C 01 votes

It does remove the dice entirely WHEN you Q with friends, and as you pointed out a game feature is not going to change behavior and neither is this thread or any thread. If someone had a large enough issue with the troll/toxic players the only way to avoid them is to A) Dont play anymore B) Season 6, wait for your friends to be available. It is not unrealistic to suggest this, its stating a near fact, plain and simple. If you want to talk about the practicality of this practice and how it would reduce the number of games you played this upcoming season, we can have that conversation, but keep in mind even then the quantity may go down, but the quality should (if youre friends arent secretly the tilting toxic turds we are running from) increase by an equal amount....which should improve win rate and in the end make the climb easier and less stressful.

My point was focused around the fact that as someone who plays league quite frequently, queing with friends for all the games isn't going to be a possibility. Something else to consider is that if queing with many people pairs you with other large groups like that you're going to be facing another team, but they could end up being more skilled than your teammates. Something that come up a lot is that for climbing purposes solo que tends to be most effective because you have less of a chance of being paired with another duo que if you were to.

I see many issues that will persist into season 6, but from the last comment you made it appears that you have a negative bias against this particular conversation topic or possibly just threads related to it. Threads are created to converse about topics, not be the solution to one as your comment expressed that it clearly wouldn't be. I didn't expect it to be, just wanted to be part of the conversation and bring up some points of my own.

S H A Y C 01 votes

someone who plays league quite frequently, queing with friends for all the games isn't going to be a possibility.

It most certainly is a possibility as their are non ranked q's for you to play in while you wait for your group. Playing only ranked is a choice that is just as easily made to only play ranked with your group. You dont have to make the choice but it is available to you and thus "possible"

facing another team, but they could end up being more skilled than your teammates.

This happens now, so i see nothing that has changed here. sometimes i get a bronze Q'd with his silver buddy on my team, and sometimes i get a silver Q'd with his high gold buddy on the other team, and sometimes bitches just be smurfing. either way unfair games occur on the regular, so that dynamic has not changed.

just wanted to be part of the conversation and bring up some points of my own.

And we are currently engaged in discussing those points.
