As a support, when do I back in relation to my ADC?

When I am a support, I keep having problems with indecisiveness when my ADC backs, but I don't know what to do. Do I back with them? Do I clear the minion wave? Do I ward the surrounding area? Do I help mid? Jungle? Both?

With the changes to Spellthiefs edge you will want to get into a habit of backing with them. If your JG is close by though you might be able to hang around (provided you are requesting brief assistance until your adc gets back.)

If both you and the adc are low on hp/mana and your jg is not nearby you may have no choice but to recall and lose some turret plating. While it isn’t really a good thing to lose plating the turrets DO get a little stronger defensively for every plate they lose so it’s not like the enemy team is going to 100-0 the turret in a single recall.

If you have ancient coin and can safely keep the enemy bot lane away from your turret try and get mana coins to get resources back for when your adc returns (coin doesn’t have a tribute penalty, you just won’t see gold coins drop without a nearby ally)

That’s just from my experience, hope it helps!

I back when I need to. My adc is useless without me and better play defensive while I'm gone or I'm taking the kills.

So, take this for what it's worth, but here is the gist in my experience: The ideal situation is, you've just won a fight bot and the opposing laners have to Recall. You want to now push in the wave with your ADC until your minions are at their tower, blowing mana if needed to push it in. At this point you can:

  1. Recall to buy & regen hp and mana
  2. If you have T2 GP5 item and Boots of Mobility or cannot afford either, are above 80% health and have enough mana for a full rotation of spells, then you want to try to roam mid and ward dragon along the way. Then, you can again assess your hp and mana and Recall or return to your bot lane tower depending on how vulnerable you think your ADC is. Since you pushed in your wave, their wave will now be pushing into your tower which is good for your ADC.

If you lost a trade and your ADC died or is forced to Recall, you can:

  1. Assess the burst of your lane opponents as well as your hp and mana. If you can safely stay and last hit minions, do so. Do not use any spells.
  2. Recall if you can purchase T2 GP5 item AND Boots of Mobility. Or if you have low health, low mana, and your flash is on cooldown.
  3. If you already have T2 GP5 item and Mobi Boots, and have most of your health and mana and it is still unsafe to stay due to a burst lane like Leona/Lucian, consider roaming mid if you think you can make a difference. Do not recall, return to bot lane.

It comes with experience, but there are multiple factors. Wave position, where your jungler is, whether you have sufficient vision around the lane, have the enemy laners backed etc.

Sometimes its smart to hold the wave so it'll freeze in front of your turret and not die to turret (adc gets farm when they come back), if neutral wave position and your jg is in river maybe help with dragon.

Im not a big support player but you'll learn with time what different situations call for. If you are behind in the lane or if the enemy JG is MIA (potentially on your side of the map) and esp if enemy jg is fed you should probably back with your adc.

I back when its good for me and i wont lose too much exp not in relation to my adc.

If he's a dumb ass and didn't shove the wave, shove then back.

Or just keep soaking exp and gain levels, whoever gets 5 and 6 or better yet 11 nowadays wins the game.
