Sona rework has destroyed Sona.

pyron55··20 votes·3,888 views

Now. I'm going to be completely clear. I only played twelve games as old Sona before her rework. So this isn't going to be about "Statistics" or "What type of role she is". No. This, is about Sona, the maven of the strings. The fact is, I don't care if she was nerfed, I don't care if she was buffed, what I care is when the nerfs or buffs affect the outline of what that character is supposed to be.

For example, Sona. Before the rework, Sona was EXACTLY what she was supposed to be, A beautiful prodigy of a mystical instrument that in her hands could masterfully conduct the emotions of others, and each battle was an epic composure in the making in which she had no fear of mistakes. The composure influenced the battle itself as it was written.

But the rework happened... and Sona fell from that. Now, instead of a prodigy, she's more like those people in band class who struggle to play the scales. Instead of conducting her ally's emotions, she now gives them hope that she practiced for one second before they realize it's the same old song. Half of the song she's too afraid to play effectively and thus nothing but 100's of counts of rest. She isn't proud enough to play her instrument loud enough for others to hear unless they're right near her. And her epic composure is Failing at playing a song they know. Her allies can only enjoy it they're all together and really just ignoring her.

So now, instead of an epic being composed, it's a 7th grade D- band student failing at a playing test for not playing until what little music she actually knows. While the old Sona was one to speak through the etwahl, the new Sona does not fit the image at all. She's... quiet compared to her past self. Too quiet. This is why I dislike the new "Sona".... because it's no longer an epic musician... it's someone else trying to replace them.

So, comment away. I may have screwed up in describing this whole thing... The thing is, this has a deeper meaning behind it than if she's playable or not, if she's good or bad, or the fact of how the new stuff is more "Fun". so ask for clarification on any parts you don't understand. Or ask me about something I didn't account for. Also, please make some good points, I may fight back with my own views, but that's what I do to get the center of someones opinion. Thanks.

As much as I like her new W I really miss how her old kit flowed so well.

Now that all the cooldowns are higher different she feels so clunky and off tempo :/

And what's worse is that her new 'stances' don't overlay. That was what I liked before the rework; you could give a lot of your teammates a lot of different buffs for a short period.

I first accepted the rework with open arms, and I appreciate what Riot tried to do with her, but at the same time I've come to realize her new auras have restricted her quite a lot.

Xonra6 votes

Yup. I actually played quite a few games with Sona, and almost nothing but in Season 3...I won't go on another rant but I just don't like this new Sona. Not just gameplay wise, but mostly, it just.....doesn't feel like Sona.

It feels like someone trying really hard to be Sona, like someone found her instrument and is doing a fairly bad job of playing it as well as she did, then stole her clothes and is cosplaying as Sona.

pyron554 votes

I know... that's what makes me sad.

Pika3102 votes

Agreed, this current version of "sona" is either an amateur cosplaying as Sona or a small child from Nami's village cosplaying as Sona. Since her current kit is a cookie-cut version of Nami's, ever since her auras were removed taking away her only identity. We can't see her legs underneath that skirt, it very well may be a fish tail.

I'm guessing the real Sona was locked away in a room adjacent to Fiddlestick's, so we can't find her.

New Sona is way better imo. She is a great pick right now in all elos, and she is fun as fuck to play.

But that was not the question. The question was "Is it still Sona." Although to be honest it is preference on whether you like her new kit.

New Sona is way better imo. She is a great pick right now in all elos, and she is fun as fuck to play.

Her W is weaker but the shield is nice assuming you are leg humping the ADC as the scaling is useless 99% of games

Her Q has a shorter range and does less damage than it used to now and the buff is near useless as it lasts maybe one auto...if you are leg humping the adc

Her E is okay but most times you have to hug the person you are speeding up as you just end up out running them most times.

Ult is the same

They seem to have this awkward vision of Supports with tons of AP but in the real game that rarely happens outside of a 60 minute game, and even then there are much much better choices for supports.

Soraka and even Nami heal better (and don't go oom as fast doing it)

Zyra and Morg do more damage and poke (heck so does Annie still, and Fid)

She has no CC at all outside of her ult (which is great granted, but every support just about has cc on their ult) and her meh slow

The speed boost is pretty useless as most times you outrun the people you are trying to speed up but it is pretty underwhelming compared to most other support abilities.

Her ult is nice, no complaints there

There are so much better options I don't even see a point in playing her, and this is coming from Someone that would barely play any other champion support (and a support main) in season 3.

I would literally rather play: Soraka Nami Zyra Braum Leona Morgana Janna

At the VERY least over Sona right now. They will all give you a more complete support and don't have to leg hump you to do so.

Saianna5 votes

Her ult is nice, no complaints there

Ofc it's nice, cause Riot didn't touch it.

Narasimha4 votes

Well yeah, you don't play Sona because she's great at everything. Hell, you NEVER Played Sona because she's great at everything. You pick her because she's a support jack of all trades. She doesn't heal as much as Soraka, but she has higher damage. She doesn't do as much damage as Nami, but her poke is more reliable. The rest have different playstyles entirely. Zyra has better poke, but can't heal or boost speed. Braum and Leo have better all ins, but are themselves vulnerable to poke and can't heal. Morganna has been strong since forever. And Janna is used to for her counter initiates.

then it makes no sense because you compared her to a great musician before the rework and a lazy band student after, that sounds like you're complaining about her overall power level. stop trying to be poetic and just say what the freaking problem is.

Battle is an epic.=her aura lasting effect. Changing the emotions of her allies= Her ability's passive effects. Too afraid to play effectively.= The new cooldowns. Can only enjoy with other people around= The whole less effective with one person thing.

There, happy? You made me talk stats.

Quepha3 votes

Battle is an epic.=her aura lasting effect.

a musician does not play one chord and sit and listen to it play out for 3 hours, there's more to think about than that

Changing the emotions of her allies= Her ability's passive effects.

changing the emotions of her allies = her abilities' new snuggle zones

Too afraid to play effectively.= The new cooldowns.

cooldowns are arbitrary

Can only enjoy with other people around= The whole less effective with one person thing.

that has literally always been true of sona, she has never been meant to go off and splitpush and she was never good at it. the only difference is that now you see how and when she helps her allies with the strum of a chord instead of just standing around with her elevator music giving some bonus stats to champs within a vague range.

pyron553 votes

I never thought of her abilities as a single chord, now they are, sure but it used to be the tone and mood of her song.

changing the emotions of her allies = her abilities' new snuggle zones

That is implying she's always playing a bloody pianissimo. And badly.

cooldowns are arbitrary

You don't see how that fit's in to her being a musician. I can't quite explain it.

But the fact is, she's weaker alone with adc. And the fact is, you would be able to appreciate her music more so alone as well. and thanks, but a strum of a chord Does Not Manipulate emotions as easily as that.

Yep, I really dislike Sona's rework.

I get it, Sona's gameplay was too invisible before with no ability to "make plays" (besides flash ult). However, the rework didn't change her ability to make plays, and her power, while more visible, is unsatisfying.

So in terms of gameplay it didn't accomplish much, at the cost of making her less musically coherent and awkward (no uniform cooldowns, music range limited to 350)

Would have been better if Sona had a combo system, sort of like Invoker from Dota. You'd press buttons as if you're playing music on a musical champ, how awesome would that be

the ironic part is current sona lost the ability to

  1. perma slow
  2. split push without minions/with minions (passive gutted to oblivion + way higher cds)
  3. cant speed up minions with e
  4. can no longer use any power chord at will due to obnoxiously high cds
  5. slower across longer distances because inability to keep spamming e

me pushing past ALL turrets and killing nexus was a far bigger play than using some shitty 100hp shield on somebody give back original sona so I dont feel like a spectator in the game even with 500 ap builds please

Actually, eleven nerfs is the exact number, if you count this last one as a whole and group her CD nerfs and range nerfs together. In total, this is the list:

  1. Base HP
  2. Staccato Dmg
  3. Hymn Bolt Dmg
  4. Hymn "Aura" Dmg
  5. Aria Heal
  6. Aria Dmg Mitigation
  7. Aria Mana Cost
  8. Celerity
  9. CD Increases
  10. Range Decreases
  11. Patch 4.20

Ya, I'm still like, "Wtf Riot?" on the Frostfang nerf. It was way too hard a nerf, even the commentators said so on ESports. If it's bad enough for them to notice, then it's like a whole new level of bad. There's next to 0 justification to buying Frostfang other than just being a stepping stone to rush FQC.

Don't get me wrong, they're great commentators. Just not the most aware.

According to her Lore, Sona is a mute wonderchild who can use the Power of her Etwahl, creating music without a written note and manipulate everyone around her with the emotions she put in her music. Current Sona plays a chord that is it lol. I feel like that the Auras were a great part of her identity as Maven of the Strings wich is pretty sad yeah. And I'm even more sad ther her new "Auras" aren't playing a song, but just a short sound that should replace her beautiful music.

I'm kinda missing her songs she used to play on the rift :/

I'D LIKE TO MENTION;

Sona glides forward on harmonious winds, her elegant robe billowing softly behind her as she enters the Great Hall.

That's what written in her League Judgement. She was playing constantly music to keep flying around. This rework is already contradicting itself and the identity of the champion, since she's not playing any music anymore, and only plays short chords :V

actually I just came out with an idea, about her 4 skills become notes, and different song you played, will enchant your passive differently. But I am not sure people will want to see it though, since sona will be hard as hell :/

Take old Sona, give her the %HP heal on W new Sona has (adjusting base) and revert the E nerf at early levels (leaving level 5 as it was) to work as a one point wonder, like the current one does. That's everything Sona needed.

New Sona works under the same unrealistic concept old Karma's mantra'd Q did: That all you allies will be clustered togheter to apply your "auras" at all moments. The short lived Shield new Sona provides with her "aura" is more or less like the long range aura. Old Q aura helped a lot early game, and that laughable 20AP bonus is still more useful for casters than making them go and land an auto on the enemy to trigger the new "aura" effect. New E is an extremely selfish spell for a support to have. It's only purpose now is to make Sona rush in an attempt to give "auras" to the entire team, inestead of being the short cooldown team wide movement speed bonus that helped old Sona's team move swiftly through the map.

Just because you can now see more flashy lights does not mean Sona got better. On the contrary, it is just hiding how her overall effectiveness has gone down.

What the hell does this post even mean. Sona is still freaking Sona if her abilities behave a bit differently like wtf. Like, you're comparing her to high school band kids? What are you even talking about? She doesn't even look different if that's what you're trying to hint at.

"Is it still Sona"? what the f...of course it is, who else would it be, freaking blitzcrank?

pyron554 votes

Ok... let me say this in layman's terms. She does not feel like the epic composer her character was originally concepted to be anymore to me. Each battle was an epic song because of her abilities and how she used them. Now, it doesn't feel like that. That help?
