Weather and Time in Summoners Rift

Just some ideas,

You'd load into a Summoners Rift game and it would have a randomized weather pattern for each game.

Sometimes the Rift would be rainy, while another could be snowing or even a perfect day.

Maybe games could start at night and transition to day, and others could start at day and then transition to nightfall. Summoners Rift can get kind of old after the 300th ranked game.

There could even be a setting to choose to have that or not before the game starts. I believe a system like this would greatly improve the overall enjoyment and quality of the game.

+1 or maybe even an option to choose your own weather/time settings.

Does not quite work that well. Rain or snow would be very detrimental to clarity.

Imagine Annie's stun indicator in the snow. It's already super hard to see with Frostfire Annie, snow would be worse.

Rain would be very annoying. Think back to when you played Minecraft. (Maybe you still do) Was rain a nice part of the game? Did you enjoy the rain? I hated it. It cluttered up the screen so much, and it'll do so in SR as well.

I feel like it would be amazing to have stuff like this. It could even be based on your specific champion or skin, or the common theme like if you have several of the Freljord champs, the rift could go icy to reflect it. get the shadow isles peeps and it'll go dark and night-y. get shurima champs or peeps with the sand skins, and it could look more dry and sandy. It could be a cool change, but i think that it might add a lot of work to get everyone to look right. Probably too much. I mean, they had to update everyone just to make them look right in the new rift, doing this would need a long process of change and addition to make them look even remotely right.

I may be the only person, but I think this would be a bit annoying. I already think the random rain in the jungle is pointless. The daylight/sunlight would cause color changes, which would make differences in buffs appearance/character models to color blind people like me bracing for the bullying for my disability And rain/snow type animations are really difficult when slightly color blind (or at least like I am, as there are different degrees) but especially the angle. our "eye"/ point of view is already in the "sky" looking down at the field. Rain falling from there would irritate me.

I think No. I already lag with 15 fps in teamfights. Wont be getting a new computer for a few weeks or so..so no. option to turn off and then yes.

Frankly i think it is largely not needed. Without even mentioning visibility and clarity that would already deny this proposal, i really doubt somebody has a geographical attachment to the rift. What i mean is, while i say it' s good and gives immersion riding my kodo in the hills of Hillsbrad while it is raining it' s not the same for the rift for his own "out of place" nature: as far as we know it might not even exist in Runeterra, so even meteorological issues are in doubt. It would be good because it could give a little graphical diversity from game to game, but that would not be really much because it' s a detail that does not get caught by the attention of the player focused on the game - and is not so wll timed too, for example critters and other effects not only are fun because they happen at the right time where the player can have a bit of focus for it, but also happen due to player interaction ( having vision of a point, getting near a turret etc).

I wrote down a mess and i am sleepy, hope i made my point. Still +1 because is an interesting argument.

Some areas of the jungle already have rain in them, they could definitely improve on this.

I would love it to have a day-night cycle like Dota 2 as well that reduces non-Ward-granted vision during the night.

Also, a weather system would be interesting. Maybe it'd be like Pokemon and the weather would change depending on how it is in a selected real-world city of your choice.

SR IS really drab right now, even with the visual update. In fact, the visual update kinda made it worse, considering the simplicity. Nobody plays TT and Dominion anymore and ARAM is just a clusterfuck, so not too fun.

As much as this would seem neat it would get annoying to see the effects while trying to play, and given Riots focus on clarity they wouldn't put these distractions into the players view.

Not to mention the performance problems to occur from doing it.

This would make so many toasters cry. Also makes the game a lot tougher to design when you have to make art visible in multiple environments. For clarity and counterplay and stuff. Would probably look cool, but would also probably hurt gameplay.

One more thing for me to toggle off to run this game on my laptop.

Deaeras5/21/2015, 11:09:43 PM2 votes

You do realize how bad this would affect your FPS right?

Gati5/21/2015, 11:28:38 PM2 votes

it would be soo distracting...

would only work if you could turn on/off

If they sold stuff like a rainy Summoner's Rift for example, nothing special just some rain drops effects + darker ambient/shadows I would easily buy this, it gets boring seeing the same exact map over and over again and I believe it's psychologically proven that change in scenery can improve your emotional state tremendously. I think people seeing very simple changes like a Sunny, Winter, Rainy, Sandstorm, etc (different seasons, weathers, natural phenomenons) on the Summoner's Rift would make the game less repetitive.

Believe it or not the small things just like adding rain drops in the background or gusts of wind blowing on top of the changes in lighting could make everyone play the game more often in a more enjoyable way. I don't think this would be super easy for Riot to create, but I definitely don't think it would be difficult either. It would make the players more happy whether they realized it or not also.

An interesting idea for sure. Riot has already experimented somewhat with rain on the rift. If you jungle in the red team's jungle, you can see that in one area it is raining constantly, although rather lightly.
