%HP Damage in too Many Champs and the Shen Update

Almost every recent champions that are released/reworked by Riot seem to possess %hp damage. This concept is very annoying since it basically increase the number of tank counter to an unforgiving point. Riot made the tank meta, which is kinda acceptable, they toned in down near the end of the season and the game was more balanced. Around the beginning of season 6, with the release of a lot of new champs, Riot started to overuse the %hp damage concept. Poppy with %hp damage, Illaoi %hp heal, Jhin %hp damage, and what infuriate me the most is the change of Shen into a fighter with %hp damage Q. Tank champs are meant to be the front line to protect the allies, I like being a tanker, and with the recent patch, I couldn't even hold the line to protect anyone. The amount of damage that was introduced into the game as gone skyrockted and I was never angrier seeing a full tank champ unable to do anything in front of the bunch of damage champs (who aren't even fed).

My Shen, from a beautiful tanker who can sustain his own lane and protect the allies, has now become a squishy wimpy creature with the "trendy" %hp damage and lost almost all the essence of a tanker. His Q, as mentioned, now deal %hp damage, with the justification that it require more skills and can help him blend into the "%hp damage game" better. The identity of his Q sick heal has gone --> I can't hold the lane as long if I face any champs with shield or heal. His E now has "better damage" thanks to the scaling hp, but is that what I need? Am I a tank or a damage dealer? Shen no longer has the reduced damage component in his E. His W, I'm very much debating on which one is better, his new W is very unique. I would say it's somehow better than the previous W in terms of dealing with aa damage. However, I can still defend that his previous W is still VERY good.

  1. I can shield myself against magic damage as well.
  2. I can shield when I actually need it (i.e any sort of execution skill)
  3. It's cooldown is very short by itself (almost as short as the current passive shield)

I main Shen and have played so many games with him, I even spend time learning the new Shen and try so hard to maximize his potential and find any good build on him. I find this current Shen a big failure of champ rework. He is the product of stuffing in all the trendy features. A Shen that I main is a tanker protect everyone, now, my Q and W almost make my play very selfish. One can debate that his W helps the teammates, but his Q nature actually pull the sword to his location, so if I were to stand in front of my teammates to peel for them, I'll have to constantly stick to them. And if I stand as the front line to zone enemy out, with my Q, I actually pull the potential W away from saving my teammates. It's saving ME, NOT my TEAMMATES, and the Q even facilitate me to dive deeper just to have the Q pulled through the enemy or else my damage output will be very minimal (not because of the low damage Q, because of his low attack speed).

His E (the signature taunt) has longer cooldown now, and the worst thing I can see is the removal of damage reduction and the addition to his damage (hp scaling now instead of AP). Why do I find it bad? With the current meta, the amount of damage that other champions can dish out is A LOT. Having that damage reduction can save my ass a lot of time. With this removal, I didn't even dare to dash to the enemy team, cuz they will melt me instantly even with my "very tank build". His build is very contradicting at the moment and there are no true strength that can define him now. He has long cd in every skill (except Q) making him susceptible to any wrong move, his skills are almost out of tanky component so his full tank build isn't as effective as before (almost not effective at all). His attack speed is so slow that makes me want to pull the Q through the enemy --> if I want to be close to the teammates, I will have to walk behind the enemy line first then dash toward my team which gives me a bunch of damage to myself. If I dash toward the enemy just to pull the sword, again, I've just part myself away from my teammates and defeat the purpose of my tank role (to shield and save allies).

He has something but none of which can define him now. He's ineffective with every build. I tried CDR build, I lost a lot of gold efficiency (most of them has Mana going along and some AP which isn't very vibrant on Shen). I tried full tank build, he still take a lot of damage (due to current meta %hp damage and the lost of my tank features), I tried damage build, well you know, I got melted.

Bottom line, Riot is introducing too much of fan service play with the one who can kill will kill the entire team, the weaker team will sink to the bottom of the game. Having a true tank may save them but how many true tank can we count now? (Malphite? Tahm? Chogath?) and most of the time, they are banned or is not complimenting the team comp to make effective play. I wish Riot stop giving the DAMN %hp damage and start working on giving the tanks their spot in the game. Tank should be able to survive the fight, not melted immediately in the rain of damage.

The problem is not % HP damage, though it is part of it.

Riot doesn't want tanks to just be HP/resistance stackers and sit infront carries being unkillable, they want tanks to provide more meaningful things to fights other than being HP meatballs that can't die.

In the past the game used to be; either tanks are unkillable or carries melt tanks in seconds, so Riot wants to break that cycle by giving tanks more alternatives.

Poppy for example, say the enemy carry is a bit fed, yes he hits hard, you can't tank him for more than 4 seconds because he melts you so as Poppy your best bet would be to ult him outside the fight and allow your team to pick up some kills without being pressured by the fed Corki, that way Riot breaks the black and white cycle of tanks vs carries.
