How are match ups determined?

I was just wondering the logic behind match ups in normal Draft Pick. I know no one thinks normals matters but when i want to have fun with my friends that's what we play. I have heard that if you queue with a pre-made it gives you a harder match up. with that in mind we never get in games that are even close and you can say rank does not mater in normals but higher tier are obviously more skilled at the game. The last example was My Team ( No Rank Lvl 27, Silver 2, Plant 5, Gold 2, Bronze 1) Bronze 1 and silver 2 are the premade (technically silver elo but bronze this year not that it should matter that much).. their team (Diamond 5, Gold 3, Gold 2, Plat 3, Silver 2) Now in what world is that even close to being fair??? ohh and the Diamond 5, Gold 3, Gold 2 was a premade. I understand it would make the queue last a lot longer to get perfect matchups but this is not even close to being fair and completely ruins the fun and almost all of our matches end up being like this.

Such that a teams average mmr is roughly equal the the opposing teams average mmr.

There's two things that make that very messy sometimes:

First, theres no premade restrictions, so if a challenger is in a premade with a level 20, someones gonna have a rough time pretty much no matter what matchmaking does. Less extreme examples are much more common but no less tricky to find 'fair' matchmaking for.

Second, normals mmr is separate from ranked mmr. This means many people who focus on ranked almost exclusively (which is probably a lot of gold+ players) will have their normals mmr be much lower than their ranked one, often with genuinely silver level players having the same mmr as plats who simply don't play many normals.

It's not always as rough as you'd think though, since it's pretty common in normals for 'good' players to be playing off-roles or new champs or otherwise not playing at the same level they would in ranked. If you're playing your main role as a silver level player, it's completely possible to beat plats or even diamonds in an off-role for them. It doesn't make you a diamond level player (which is related to why normals and ranked mmr's are separate), but it certainly means theres pretty much always hope even if the ranks are intimidating at first.
