I am a silver 4 fiora/irelia main and I play top lane. I played 10 games today and lost most of them where I got ace in most of the ones I lost. My opgg has a trash winrate due to this being my first account and I started playing around 2 months ago. I am not saying I am a god at the game and I deserve a better rank but I genuinely want some advice on how to hard carry in low elo. Many people tell me to cs better however I normally am around 8-9 cs per minute up until 20 min when it is non stop teamfighting or I try and split push and my team sits in base while their entire team collapses on me. I am thinking of maining tank kass top because I see the 1v5 potential he has and no one can seem to finish games early in this elo. I also only play irelia if I pick second because of how weak she is against many matchups. If anyone has any tips to get better and/or climb they would be greatly appreciated thx <3.

Always consider how to maintain your lead. What you described about splitting is how a ton of top laners think. They're so fixated on making use of and extending their lead that they neglect to maintain it. I'm incredibly guilty of this as well. I often get 2 kills pre-10 mins, then make stupid choices to increase that lead. I decide I'm going to kill my opponent again and again as if there's no jungler, then get punished by death. So what should I do? Recognize that there's a threat to my lead and make plays when the threat is gone OR in areas where the threat doesn't exist.

Your scenario is one that's just as easy to address.

The first step is to ALWAYS ask yourself if your teammates will ACTUALLY be able to use you as a diversion. All your teammates are in the base, do you push? No, because they're too far from any objectives and you'll just get 4/5-manned. You have 3 teammates pushing the botlane turret or setting up a dragon? Yes, you're free to push. You need to split up the enemy team? Yes, push.

Second step is to ask yourself what you'll do when enemies come. I feel this is where everyone lacks and gets themselves killed. If an enemy comes and you can't literally run him down or destroy the turret while literally face-tanking him, LEAVE the turret. At this point, what you want to do is find a lead OR just maintain your lead. Here's 5 general decisions that can be made at this step:

  1. Hide BEFORE the enemy comes. Kill them using the element of surprise. This works best if you know they'll be pathing through the Jungle.
  2. Farm the enemy's jungle while waiting for the enemy to leave. When they do, PUSH to their turret again, then start step two again. This works well for keeping pressure up and forcing out multiple enemies.
  3. RUSH to your teammates and force a teamfight. Odds are you will have a numbers advantage.
  4. Stay there and trade with your opponent. This guarantees that multiple enemies will come.
  5. Just leave.

Playing one champ is good for learning quickly if you go the right way about it. The point is to not have to think about your champ so much so you can spend more attention / brain power on other things. Like watching for times you could have played better so you can give yourself a mental slap right away so you can start moving to better play immediately. And watching for small mistakes your opponents makes so you can take advantage of them.

A simple champion is good for learning as there are less things you can do, thus making it easier to work out what your best choice was if you review the game. Kind of like how it is easier to recognize where you went wrong in tic-tac-toe than it is in chess.

Getting good at playing the later stages of the game where how your team mates play has more impact on what you can do is hard at lower ranks because they are more often not playing correctly. Getting good at the earlier portions of the game where you interact with them less is therefor more productive. If you nearly always have a big lead from early game, then you only need to learn how to play with a lead.

The steps are: get good at getting a lead early -> get good at using lead mid to get a good overall situation for your team -> get good at not throwing once the game state is favorable for your team.

Playing out losing games is not productive for getting better compared to playing more early games, so if things are bad do vote yes if a surrender vote comes up.

As to what you can learn to help with mid/late game, you can:

  • Try keeping track of enemy summoner spell / ult cooldowns so you can make good choices relative to that information.
  • Learn how long is takes champs to travel between different parts of the map, so you can estimate where enemies could be even if you lack vision of them.
  • Learn correctly estimate how long it takes to do baron/dragon with different combinations of champions with various items and at different points of game time.

Stuff like that, so you have a better basis for the choices you make. But knowing such things only matters if you have the level/items to make your actions matter more than the actions of others.
