It will add to your AA AND some abilities.

For example, Caitlyn's Q ability will get stronger as you get more AD. Check the league of legends Wikia to find more.

it can only get stronger if you upgrade it or you can buy AD too to make it stronger?

Attack damage or physical damage is one of the 3 different damage types in league of legends and one of the 2 damage types you can buy. It is represented by the sword in your left corner.

Despite the name ad does scale with a lot of abilities, you can check if an abilty scales with attack damage(physical damage) or ap(magic damage) by hovering your mouse over the ability, if the numbers on the ability are orange, they scale with ad, if they are light green they scale with ap, if the numbers are yellow or pink they scale with armor and magic resist.

I do admit that it is confusing that they named one of the types ability power and the other one attack damage while both have a chance to enhance your abilities, but ad also affects your auto attack damage, while ap, if it is on an ability usually has more effect.

Damage scaling and damage type are not the same thing, though they often align.

Attack Damage increases the damage dealt by your basic attacks, which are always physical damage (unless you are Corki.) It also increases the damage of abilities which scale with AD (orange numbers), however what type of damage those abilities deal depends on the ability, not the scale factor. For example, Evelynn's E deals physical damage despite scaling with AP, while her Q deals magical damage despite scaling with AD (in her case, both abilities scale with both AD and AP, but the damage types don't change regardless of where she gets the power from.)

Originally, all abilities did scale with AP and not AD, even the ones on purely physical champions like Marksmen. That's why things like AP Trist existed. That slowly changed over time, as primarily physical damage dealers were generally switched to scaling off AD.
