What's the rhyme or reason for champs using mana/energy/fury/health/nothing?

I'm honestly just wondering what the pattern or justification is.

Seems like the champs with the strongest late game and burst potential, you'd want to gate with mana, to limit them early. But then Zed.

Maybe if it just doesn't make thematic sense for them to use mana, they're energy or resourceless. But most ADC's use mana.

Junglers are fury or resourceless, to help them clear? But Kha'zix?

I don't know. If someone has noticed a pattern, or if the balance dept. wants to chip in, that'd be great.

I think it's partially thematic. Energy champions tend to be nimble martial artists for example (also heavily slanted towards Ionian characters), while Rage and Fury champions tend to be super in-your-face melee powerhouses.

Energy also has resource constraints over long mid-to-late game fights that Mana doesn't, and most energy champions need to meet extra parameters to keep their Energy up and running.

That being said though, I am personally a fan of undoing the resource barriers and making everyone resourceless, like Dawngate was and how URF basically was. When your only limitation is ability cooldown, everything's wilder and more fun.
