Ranked placements

So I got placed in Bronze IV after 8 wins and 2 losses.

Is this normal? What's the point of winning the provisional matches if you're gonna get placed in bronze 4 with a 80% win rate. How is it calculated?

based off your preseason MMR and what rank you finished at last season.

First 10 matches of season are just 10 matches where your mmr is particularly effected compared to regular games, but aren't some all powerful reset that disregards everything else, and your placemennt ultimately depends on what your final mmr is, not on your W/L ratio.

So if someone ends the prior season with a top tier challenger mmr, they could go 0-10 and probably still place plat 1, although they'd have lower LP gains than they would had they gone 10-0 or 5-5. Similarly if you end the season with a depths of bronze 5 mmr, you can potentially go 10-0 and place bronze 5.

They are important though, since mmr determines LP gains, and hence climbing speed. Going 8-2 probably did a lot to drag your mmr up, so your lp gains for wins probably aren't awful (or if they are, they're a lot less awful then they would have been). If you can maintain that 80% winrate, you'll cruise up in ranks in no time. (Of course, if it was just a fluke, then you'll probably still climb for a little bit, but things will quickly settle down wherever you actual skill level lies.)
