James Madison and League of Legends
When was the last time Riot built upon an idea developed through the PBE servers, or addressed complaints made by a collective group of players?
Why does it seem as if players are constantly and always ignored?
Through the creation of the PBE servers, we were deceived into believing that it was a way to increase communication.
Currently the League community is made up of factions, "number of citizens, whether a majority or minority, who were united and activated "by some common impulse of passion, or of interest, adverse to the rights of other citizens, or to the permanent and aggregate interests of the community.""
Why are factions considered "bad"?
It is simple, because of the arising of different perspectives on the same problem. Different perspectives means more work, means putting in more time. And time is equivalent to money. These two viewpoints, that factions are bad and that time is money, is integrated in the fundamentals of the Riot business model. There recent activity on balance design and game change is creating a wall of separation between the player and the game.
This game is made FOR THE PEOPLE'S ENJOYMENT. When a game loses diversity and we are shaped into believing the idea of winning = fun , we enter a slippery slope that discourages innovation and encourages conformity into a limited pool of "winning" champions. This alone is alarming and to make matters worse the unjustified changes made to the game, are making the game less satisfying and less enjoyable.
Today, as the majority of the community rally together to cry out against the unjustified changes made by Riot, compromise and change should be met. Instead, Riot has personally felt threatened by this call and continues to neglect the player base. They seek a way to remove these factions that rally up against them.
As Madison says in his Federalist no. 10, there were two ways of removing the causes of factions, or political parties. The first was to destroy the liberty essential to their existence. This remedy would be worse than the disease. The second was to give everyone the same opinions, passions, and interests. This was impossible. Woven into the fabric of all societies, deeply planted in the very nature of man, were conflicting ideas, interests, and passions.
Right now we are witnessing the second way of removing factions. If it wasn't evidently clear, Riot plays favorites. Riot loves champions that will lead to more money. LC$TopPlays is quintessential to their business model. In order to attract new players, flashy and extravagant are the best ways to succeed. By eliminating diversity of reliable stagnant play, that is not as fun to watch, Riot shapes us into playing a very limited pool of champions (by buffing and nerfing and REMOVING items) that can actually win games. League has a high Defense to Attack ratio. Which means that if two perfect players were playing against each other, if one player was given an advantage, it would be nearly impossible for the other player to beat this player. That being said even if that player with the advantage did well, if the rest of his team is doing poorly, he still has a high chance of losing. Why is this mentioned? Because this advantage is given out to the champions that Riot loves and despite hundreds, maybe even thousands of complaints these champions are hardly touched.
Think about how safe and reliable Zed is, and after all the complaints they respond with a "nerf" in attack speed. Does that even logically make sense? A nerf in attack speed for Zed, an AD Assassin Caster, who will put in maybe 1 or 2 or even 3 auto attacks into the Mid Laner, who is now FORCED to build zahoynias to have a chance? Or Sona who was nerfed to the point where she is deemed unplayable? Or Akali, when after the changes were made in PBE, despite tons of complaints by the players, there opinions were completely neglected?
Think about our current jungle and how unsatisfying it is. Jungling has an extremely limited pool of champions and it is now an almost guarantee that you will be underleveled. Again, despite our complaints, our cries, we are merely overlooked. No explanations, no direct rebuttals, nothing.
On a side note: I think it also to note the idea that (highWinRate != overPowered) or vice versa. A champion, Zed, can have a low win rate strictly because of the amount of players that want to try to win with Zed. A champion like Sona could have a high win rate because the number of players who play Sona were much less than Zed, and thus resulted in a higher win rate because they were more knowledgeable. A more clear example of this can be seen in numbers. Hypothetically, there are 10 players that play Zed. Of the 10, 4 were winning, while the other 6 were losing. That means his win ratio in these small numbers is 4/10 = 40%. Now in the case of Sona, there are only 5 players. Of the 5, 3 were winning, while the other 2 were losing. That means Sona's win ratio in these small numbers is 3/5 = 60%.
Riot, We have been waiting for you to listen to us. We, the people feel passionate. We, are burning. We, want change. What kind of change? Let me tell you, we want to know WHY your idea of what's "best" occurs. We want to have FEEDBACK on our ideas. We want ours ideas to be tested and maybe implemented if they are good enough. The community is a very intelligent group, and have committed hundreds of hours playing this game. Yes, as a developer you brought this game to life, but those who understand the game the best are the players.
Please Riot, throw us a bone, help us love you again. Don't lose your soul. Create positive change.
On a side note, although it may seem that we are being ungrateful for a free to play game, it is the lack of keeping a promise that is so frustrating to players. The promise that our ideas would be heard, the promise of working with the community to create a better game. Frankly put, the game changes today are not very good. The removal of items, the nerfing of champions, and the "compensation" is thoroughly lacking. Please Riot, we love this game, don't let it go down in flames like it is beginning to now.
