Why do people smurf ( Bronze\Silver\Gold ) ?

Question : Why do people play on (smurf) against level 10s and 20s if they don't want uneducated little noobs like me on there team. I mean... i know they're probably relieving stress from rank off on low level normal and i try to play my best to help them enjoy the game but why dont they try to understand that if they're playing at agianst/low level they'll get low level on there team that suck also.

Diamond player here.

I smurf to practice new champions/roles that I'm bad at, so that I'm not getting stomped by plats and diamonds in normal games while I play champs that I'm bad at.

I used to have a smurf account for the same purpose--so I could practice roles I wasn't used to.

ppl like you ruin the game for others, what you are doing is really inconsiderate and all you are doing is showing how big of a hypocrite you really are

The guys that both smurf and rage in game about their teammates are sh*t people. Most of them are actually terrible at the game and they try to enjoy stomping people that are worse than them because they just began the game. But smurfs in general aren't the problem, the problem is if they start being jerks about beginners telling them to uninstall, that they suck etc.

You guys do realize the answer might be a lot simpler? That 90% of the people smurfing in silver or bronze just have spare accounts they want to level up? Even pros have spare accounts they had to level up from silver or low gold.

Well, I can provide the basic answer here.

Usually the people who use smurfs aren't good enough to fight in their own divisions and tiers, so they have to bully lower level players to make up for their lack of performance at the higher levels. It feels good to go 20/1 when you've been going 3/11 for the better part of a week, and its basically frustration.

Also, they rank up their buddies and help them get tiers and ranked rewards they aren't good enough for and do not deserve, but surprise, as long as its being done by two friends in Broken Queue its allowed!

I've always wanted to see ranked smurfs banned, but it will never happen. One of many reasons I'm heading to Overwatch soon because the community on here is possibly the worst I've seen in any game in years.

What are you talking about lol. Nearly every single pro / high elo player I've met has at least one smurf. I personally have 3-4 smurfs that I've used over the years.

The reason to smurf is legit just for fun and to relieve stress.

Never really understood why "smurfs" tend to flame at lower levels and ranks. Is it so hard to understand they're playing at a lower skill level?

The Deckowner4 votes

many smurfs are just people who suck and cant climb so they play in lower elo to stomp less skilled players

Why do i smurf:

  1. Because 20minute fill queue times are not fun
  2. Because i want to play other roles than im good at (sup/mid main)
  3. Because i want to play mechanically challenging champions without getting stomped
Ragnar422 votes

I Smurfed because I 1 trick ponied to gold, and didn't want to lose it trying to learn other roles/champs.

Colgate Gator2 votes

The only reason I smurfed in those levels was because I needed a level 30 account, so playing agaisnt low level people wasn't really the goal, but the road.

I made a smurf account to play with my local friends (who are mainly silver), because all they did was play ranked and we couldn't play together, but I managed to rank up to platinum on my smurf while they remained stuck on silver and I'm not going to make a second smurf so...Yeah.

Also it helps to play and learn new Champions in a competitive, yet relaxed enviorement (since you can play ranked without putting your main account's ranking in danger).

Morsigil2 votes

I don't smurf, but Dynamic Queue taught me why it's fun. A bronze 5 who added me in a normal invited me to a ranked game with his bronze 4/5 friends and I played Jinx. Holy shit. What a stomp. They were all flailing at each other while I CS'd and then walked up and got 2 quadras in a row one game. The other two games were similar stomps. Sure was fun.

Edit: I don't support smurfing just to stomp newbies, or any reason really.

FearEngineer4 votes

I bet they felt the same way.

Morsigil1 votes

Look, in my defense I didn't know any of them were bronze until after the third game. I was like "This sure is easy, what rank are these... ho shit". I just accepted the invite.

Mostly my post was yet another jab at dynamic queue, but it's relevant to smurfing.

I have a low level account (around 15 I believe) that I only use when playing with my cousin who is level 10, and another friend who is level 22. I tend to not say anything in chat or just give tips when possible. I've seen several smurfs that rage for no reason, it's honestly pretty stupid.

shyv2 votes

i smurf to learn new roles and duo with my friends that are in bronze / silver, but i level my accounts vs bots. and if i encounter any new players in bot games, i try to help.

people that make low level accounts just to destroy new players are scumbags. not saying you have to level your account vs bots, but don't act like a bitch when you start losing, and don't tryhard against players that have absolutely no idea what they're doing.

if you're really a good player, you can win without getting fed. these new players won't understand the macro game at all, and you can get a massive gold lead just by farming. don't make them spend half the game staring at a grey screen. let them have fun.

anyways, i'm sorry this is happening to you, if you ever want to level with me let me know! i have an account that's only about level 5 right now, and i would love to help out some new players.

First you mean "newbs like me" when referring to yourself as inexperienced. A newb is NEW at something, like "Hey newbie, ready to learn how to last hit in League today?" A noob (this is an insult btw), is someone who thinks they know everything, but really doesnt know much at all. They say/do dumb things all the time like if you just wiped the enemy team outside the base and theyre all on 40 second death timers, instead of pushing with the minion wave into the base for the win they run for Baron... and think youre stupid for not doing it too. They say/do those things cause they really dont understand the game, but act like they the grand king of tactics and strategy.

While were at it, the final thing is a nub, aka. a "Non Useful Body." These people take up space, they blocked a real player from getting into a match. Troll picks in this game, people who type rage novels in the chat instead of playing are nubs, cause they arent useful, but they are a body in the game.

So there you have it, newb, noob, nub. Three different words, different meanings, misunderstood by a generation of gamers because words r hard.

To your point of your thread here. Many people are just leveling alternate accounts. Maybe they want an account where they play ranked as Mid/Top, but dont want to lose matches playing on their Bot/Jg account.

Others can only get an erection if they cause misery and pain to others, and need to play against people with less skill than themselves to feel good about themselves. Theyre bullies, that one dumb as hell kid that has been held back 3 grades and is bigger than the other kids, and picks on them. I know theyre frustrating to deal with, but honestly imagine how hard their actual life is if playing video games against people of lower skill levels to win is how they have to feel good. Its really sad. Also, theyre the real noobs, they think theyre dominating, when theyre really just picking on newbs.

I have a smurf to prove I am better than the ranking on my main. I am bronze in this account but I have gold on my smurf account and play with a mixture of plats and high gold.

Stereo Dreamer1 votes

I do it not be flamed or less chance to be shut down while using stupid stuff like AP Lucian support / Brand jungle / Bruiser Caitlyn / etc. or to play with friends who don't like laning against higher elo players. I'll sometimes rank it up more to relearn the basics or not get overconfident and use it to analyze myself against different levels of players and dynamics.

As someone who has smurfed a considerable amount, I can explain why.

The main reason people smurf is for fun, for destressing, and for trying new things that you wouldn't do on your main, but still playing in a RANKED competitive environment where everyone is trying hard to win.

People say "go to normals" if you want to try new builds, playstyles, champs, etc. but in normals, people don't TRULY care about winning. Ranked, everyone cares about the game much more, and thus it is a simulated environment, just with people less knowledgeable on the game and champions than you.

Smurfing is fun, it relieves stress if you're tilted on your main. Queue times are much shorter if you're high elo, sometimes you aren't in the mood to try ultra hard, sometimes you want to play with friends in ranked. Many people smurf to get their account up to the same elo their main is at in order to practice.

All of these things are acceptable imo. Sure it ruins games, but it doesn't happen often enough to cause people to truly drop cuz of smurfs

It happens constantly, and its the main reason this game has such a huge barrier of entry. You.

I smurf specifically to work on stuff that I am weak at or want to master from the ground up.

I have an account that I'm currently leveling that will be a Leblanc only account. I am doing this because I have only a 35%ish win rate on her in my elo. i can win lane, lose game consistently so smurfing gives me a chance to see how to carry from the lowest level and work my way up one step a time.

in general normals, and smurfing is where you can play your weakest style/role/champs and not worry about being pub stomped. if i were to play say top lane riven vs my elo I would feed like a monster every single game and probably not learn much.

people who smurf to pubstomp in low elo are another breed of person.

Rosaline1 votes

As most people have stated before, I've smurfed a decent amount mainly to practice new champions/roles that I'm not comfortable with, play with lower ranked friends/new players, just relax from ranked, not get flamed for doing poorly in a normal, or the typical, "We only lost because your team has Diamond players!" However, I will say that if a person is indeed a high elo smurf, the chances of them actually running into Silver and below are pretty rare, or at least it was in my case. I have an account at Gold IV and one at level 22 and they both have rarely had games against players who are primarily Bronze-Silver ever since I've passed level 13 or so, if anything, most range between Gold - Diamond and the occasional sub level 30 on my team. If a person claims they're a "smurf" and are somehow at a bronze/silver level, I doubt they're highly ranked on their main account and use their smurf in order to "pick on" players that are actually on a lower skill level than they are. This isn't to talk trash about lower ranked players because I do know a handful of people who only play normals, but in general, most of the people who brag about being a smurf are generally at about the same level of play that they're at even when they're smurfing. As much as people shit talk Riot about smurfs matching with new players, after a certain amount of games you do end up against people at around about the same skill level as you. Of course, there are always a few games where the high elo smurf ends up in a considerably low elo game but that happens at every elo more so as you get past Gold++ where people are climbing on their lower ranked accounts.

ZeeWolfZ1 votes

Because Bronze/Silver/Gold players are angry they cannot reach Diamond and are destroyed in their elo.

Since making a smurf in their elo is pointless, because of the same result, they make fresh smurfs to feel good about themselves by crushing NEW players.

Bad Kids need to feel good too.

I usually smurf on my Gold Accounts to practice new builds and champs and crush my opponents.

boost friends that suck at the game. learn other champs/roles. or just to stomp pubs.

If I smurf I'd be in rusty iron 20 because am just silver but thats what I'd assume its for.

Sythriel Draken1 votes

At least one youtuber I watch smurfs to have a challenge.. For instance, last season one of his smurf accounts was strictly him playing Yorick.

I do agree tho that people that smurf to stomp players should burn in a fire, but people that smurf to help should be allowed.

I have one to teach my level 5 friends that are just starting the game. I'd rather they didn't go against full rune page level 30s (and vice versa). I also like playing champs that I've never played before on it. I usually vs bots when i do, and try to give advice where I can. Since I fill when I smurf, I generally end up supporting, which is my main, but i'm not trying to pull of fancy plays and all that. Just trying to keep my newbie buddies alive.

People who try-hard and rage as smurfs are scum. :c

And as far as i see, mostly only silver and bronze players are ''smurfing''
