How do you play against Leona in lane as an ADC/Supp

I dont claim to be too good at the game or anything but I've been slowly carrying myself out of bronze, but I always have trouble when I face Leona. It's very hard to be aggressive cus she can just jump on and kill you.

What do?Leona

Tbh im someone who has 700k mastery points on caitlyn and i still think leona can be freelo under plat.

I really hate fighting her because her ult is just fucked with the range it has.

If you didnt pick sivir then you most likely have to flash or dash out of the ult. Either way your support has to counter pick leona.

Morgana and janna are really really good against leona. Leona becomes useless

Ya pretty much, Alistar works as well due to headbutt instadisengage

morgana works really easy but i've seen some good thresh players that can stop her whole combo with flay

I face Leona quite a bit. Once you play against her so many times, you can predict the moves she will make based on her physical movement. At that point, it will become easier to dodge her stun. And then of course, you could also build items that will protect you against her. This is just my experience against her personally. I'm sure there are other and better ways to play against her.

Supports are sort of a triangle of counters, you basically have the more defensive ones like soraka and janna, the tanky ones like leona and alistar, and the more poketastic ones like sona or zyra. Generally speaking, defensive>tank>poke>defensive. At least in my experience, a better bot laner will probably come tell me why I'm wrong :>

I wouldn't say that tank counters poke. The thing that counters poke is hard engage which doesn't always come with tanks (Tahm Kench). I think it's a little more complex then you say. Sure lets say tanks counter poke (which I can agree that some tanks counter poke). However, Alistar is a tank. Go play Alistar into Karma or Zyra or Sona. Good luck. If the tank has a reliable form of ranged harras however, (Braum Q, Taric stun, Tahm Kench Q), they can hold up in those lanes fine because of the harras.

Sustain>Poke>Kill>Sustain That right there is what you're looking for.

Strong disengage and/or good poke are key. She can only all in and nothing else, and if she's been wittled down she won't be too eager to dive you :P She's very much a pub stomper, quite the challenge to conquer :O

It depends on what ADC you are, what ADC is with her, who your support is, and other stuff.

But generally, level 1, you can try to poke her if you have long ranged poke. If she started Q or E, you should escape fine if she tries to engage. But at level 2+, you start to play safe and poke from out of her E range (if you have poke). If she misses E, it's an opportunity to get more poke in. Basically make her afraid to engage on you. Otherwise play safe. Unfortunately Leona can basically solo a mis-positioned ADC early on.

As support, her biggest counter is probably Alistar . Just freeze lane right in front of your tower and she can't do anything against an ali because he will just knock her back into the tower. Other good choices for supports against her are Janna Morgana Taric Thresh Lulu . ADC I'm not sure about because I never play it but from my supporting experience I would say Ezreal Lucian Tristana and Vayne would be good choices because they have escapes to dodge Leona's E.

Leona support is effectively a kill lane. It's very aggressive and wants to all in as much as possible. Either you need to disengage her immediately or catch her out of position in lane (basically when she goes too hard), and kill her before her ADC gets there.

The other option would be to go for a kill lane (Thresh, Braum, Zyra, Alistar), supports that can easily set up kills in the 2v2. Did I mention that 3 of those four champs counter Leona fairly well (Thresh can Flay during Leona's Zenith Blade and cancel it, Alistar can headbutt her away and Zyra is just annoying for any melee support with no ranged harras to play against).

As a Lux support main, I used to hate the Leona matchup. Then I realized that, with an Ezreal or a Caitlyn in the ADC role, we could just do so much poke damage from beyond her E range that she would never E into us because she knew we'd just blow her up instantly.

Leona main here Leona Stay out of Zenith Blade range and respect her presence, if you can maintain bush control it will make her a bit more predicable. I find Alistar and Janna to be my biggest counters because of their great disengage, Morgana is evil as well because of the black shield and her q. Generally as a sup, harass Leona if you can do it safely (ex: jg is close enough to gank, bigger minion wave, longer range, e is down) otherwise wait for her to engage, and don't engage her or she might turn it around by jumping on your adc. When playing Thresh, Blitzcrank, or Nautilus DO NO PULL LEONA, it gets her much closer to your adc and generally in e or r range while her w will shrug off your pitifully weak attacks. It's best to use cc after Leona engages and not before. I hope this helps :)

Has a Lena man I never have troubles against janna Morgana Alistar or thresh in my hundreds of of games I have only face one janna that would completely shut down my engage and that was in aram

Leona's main weakness pre-6 is that she only has one real stun and then she's finished. Don't hit her when she Es in, fall on her ADC if they're trying to follow up. Other people have already posted about using poke with longer range than her E and that's also true.

Post-6 you just have to be smart about your positioning and who is around to follow up on her engages. If she Rs you and jumps in 1v2 against your ADC/Supp, she dies. If she Rs you and 3v2s you guys with her ADC and jungle, you both die. In a 2v2 scenario you just have to make sure that you can keep her ADC from fully utilizing her CC and damage enhancers. If they fail to burst you, Leona is kind of inert for a few seconds and you can probably turn it around or escape.

In a large number of match ups don't underestimate her all in level 3 because it's actually really strong. Her biggest weak phase is pre-level 3 when she doesn't have all of her initiation tools.

I didn't say she was weak early. I said she only has one stun, which is single target. She can engage but only disable one of you. I've found the best way to deal with Leona engaging is to fall on her ADC. Whether you're the ADC or Supp forcing them to deal with the target that Leona didn't hit reduces her effectiveness a lot, or highly damages her ADC whom she can't sustain well (with only so many triggers from Relic, a lot of which are used immediately with no heal benefit).

You're Soraka? She jumps on your ADC, drop your Q and E on her ADC and heal yours after you get Rejuvenated. You'll win that exchange most of the time and your ADC can start following up if their ADC stays around to get rooted. Zyra? Give her ADC a bunch of plants to deal with, they either back off or take a lot of damage from you. Any ADC? If their ADC goes for your support and not you deal a lot of damage to them. Supports start with three pots, so ADC health is more "valuable" early game because they only have one. You win that trade by doing that. Unless you're low enough for them to kill you, but since Leona's poke is nonexistent you should be practically full health at level 3, so shame on you if you are.

Requiemsfire1 votes

The Leona in your scenario is a pleb. We jump on Soraka.

Serpents Embrace1 votes

You'd still lose that, as explained. =\

Especially because if you fail to kill, Soraka won't even need to pop a potion to heal herself back up and you got to wail on their ADC uncontested.

Requiemsfire1 votes

Not really, Leona's burst is enough to drop an ADC to half health, and then there is the sunlight passive which deals extra damage when attacked by an ally and then there's Leona's ADC damage. Soraka would almost very die here or would die here if she didn't back off.

Serpents Embrace1 votes

My duo and I have fought a lot of Leonas as Jhin/Soraka.

She's never been able to 100-0 either of us at level 3.

So... you're either grossly over-estimating Leona or under-estimating Soraka. Not sure which.

Requiemsfire1 votes

I main Leona and a support main( not that it's likely I wouldn't be)

The best way to deal with Leona is to watch where she is and know what level she is. Keep an eye out and know the reach of her zenith blade because that is instrumental to your survival. If she uses eclipse this is a general indication of she's about to try and engage. If she misses her Zenith blade, she can't initiate then, and is suddenly prone to being punished heavily with damage. Her ultimate is very hard to deal with but generally unless you can win a trade or your support can disengage Leona from you wanna keep your distance.

Support is my secondary and I like Leona a lot. Leona has several noticeable weaknesses. In general, I would argue that Morgana Braum do pretty well verse her along with poke oriented champions.

Leona is all about decisionmaking. If the person playing her is not good at making decisions then Leona is not an issue. I err on the side of caution as Leona and almost never use my skills unless it is a very obvious kill or to disengage.

Gameplay patterns with Leona:

  • If Leona gets behind she has several issues, since she is a diving champion. She always needs health to survive her dives and if she has early deaths she cant buy health items.
  • Poking her down before level 3 will make her less likely to approach
  • Pay attention to the enemy ADC. If the ADC is playing very passively and farming you can bait a Leona dive. It is very likely that the adc will NOT respond to Leona's actions. The first thing I do when I play Leona is figure out if my ADC is aggressive and will follow up if I go in. If they will not, then I am not diving unless the jungler comes. I will just die.
  • Good Leona players take Q first (Q can kill an early ward with Auto-Q-Auto) and can disengage. Novice Leona players take E. Taking E first suggests the Leona will play aggressive so remain cautious
  • Leona's deaths strongly correlate to whether your team is "winning" or "losing" higher deaths on Leona means the team that has her on their team is doing poorly, while lower deaths means the team is winning. A winning Leona will be more assertive than a losing one - note that.
  • Good Leona's will NOT dive if they are lower than 3/4s health so try to keep her around that. Novice Leona's will dive anyways. Also note that.

When I was first learning Leona a Platinum Leona main suggested that I run 3 movement speed quints. Leona's biggest issue is leaving without dying. The MS quints are VERY noticeable in early laning and if I were an opponent of Leona I may look at her movement speed. If it is higher than the 335 base speed, be careful. She is probably decent at dodging and a seasoned Leona.
