What are your thoughts on Lux?

MINJAH·6/1/2015, 4:00:29 PM·14 votes·3,518 views

Since Season 2 and picking up the game from my friends, Lux has always been my favorite champion. I really wish that I could see her played more competitively. I know and have heard all the old arguments (i.e Why play Lux when you can play Morgana?; Her skillshots are too unreliable; etc). I was just wondering you thoughts on what Riot could do to make her more viable?

Could she be a better AP Carry with better scaling? Could she be a better support with more utility? (Blind on her Q cause idk, light blinds people).

Mana costs are terrible for lux right now. fixing that would certainly help.

I think Lux is in a good spot right now. Maybe it's just me, but I do feel like she can do well mid lane. She's not the strongest, but she can definitely do a good job if played well.

I think Lux pays too much of a power-budget price for her passive, especially since it's really clunky to fully utilize.

To maximize her damage while bursting someone, Lux (A) needs to sacrifice safety by moving in to auto-attack range, and (B) needs to weave auto-attacks into her spelll rotation (E-Q-Auto-Detonate E-Auto-R-Auto). All this while being in easy access range of the enemy team. It puts her right into assassin's claws and slows down the speed with which she can burst someone since she needs to wait for the auto-attack projectile to land and detonate her passive before she can move to the next step of the rotation, and with how mobile and fast the game is right now this gives her enemies a significant window of opportunity to escape. Lux can rapidfire E-Q-E-R to burst faster but she misses out on a sizeable chunk of damage by only getting one proc of her passive (the one triggered by R before it re-applies the passive).

I think the biggest change Lux needs is to have some damage shifted off of her passive and onto her spells. Possibly even have ALL of the damage shifted to her spells and be given a utility passive (damage amplification on targets her skills have granted her vision of, for example.)

Lux is in a good spot and is perfectly viable in solo-que.

She is just not good enough for LCS, but it isnt because the champion is weak...it is because the Pros will always play the strongest.

I have played Lux quite frequently lately

Not that I never play her under other circumstances, but there is one thing what has gone through my head when I have VS'd any other midlaner then Zilean and that is

"Well that's not fair"

Syndra/Ziggs massacring creepwaves with little mana cost "Well that's not fair, I have to spend 1/4th of my mana bar just to take off half the health of caster minions"

Leblanc/Most midlaners shit on my 100% health bar when I am cc'ed "Well that's not fair I have to go through 2 whole spell rotations just to wish I can kill someone"

A hard CC hits me without much option to avoid it "Well that's not fair, my CC isn't even hard but I can only ever consider it hitting if I am in a brush and 150 units away from my target"

Waveclearing without much effort "WELL THAT'S NOT FAIR!"

Lux has problems, pretty shitty ones

aaronautumn6/1/2015, 4:05:52 PM4 votes

I think she's in a pretty good spot, she has the range to reach the enemy carries, even if the enemy team has a strong front line. She's not a great pick bottom lane, she might have poke but in the event of a gank, her snare and slow is all she has.

SleepyLionCub6/1/2015, 8:43:06 PM3 votes

I feel like her E should cost a little less, she should be able to pre detonate it "like gragas barrel" and her aa animation speed should be greatly increased (she should have the fastest of any mage.)

Thoughts on Lux: She has a brother complex

DirkTarTar6/2/2015, 2:49:31 AM2 votes

She is clunky and has dumb mana costs

Dreadlocks6/1/2015, 4:12:41 PM2 votes

She has insane damage with low cool downs. Making her mid-late game quite strong.

Primadonna6/2/2015, 12:23:47 AM2 votes

She's pretty balanced right now, the only thing working against her is her big mana costs.

Sypher The Poro6/2/2015, 2:55:59 AM2 votes

Lux was the first champion I ever bought, and one of my favorites. I think she's okay right now, but has some problems that really hurt her.

  1. The passive is kinda awkward to use. Champions like Kat, Zed, Yasuo, etc with punish you extremely hard for getting into AA range. Even champions like Veigar or Annie can simple through a Q your way to get a pretty even trade. My idea for a change, would be to either speed up her AA animation along with giving her a little more AA range. OR, simple add the ability to reveal any champion that has her passive on them. Another fix would be allowing any spell Lux lands also proc the damage, basically like her ult already does. This would make Lux more of a chain-burst mage that focuses on landing several spells in a sequence.

  2. Her Q does not reveal champions. For a mage that is themed around the idea of Light, it makes little sense. While champions such as Morgana can just watch the projectile and see if it disappears, Lux's can hit two targets so unless there are two people in a bush that doesn't work.

  3. The shield is actually in a pretty good place, I would leave it as it is.

  4. The mana cost on E is just stupid. No one has a mana cost that high without some kind of mana return.

  5. Her ult is in a good spot. It does have a low cooldown with a huge range, but lower damage compared to other AP mages like Veigar and Xerath. It is one of the core parts of Lux that I would prefer stay as is.

I noticed that someone said "Imagine if Ezreal and Jinx could fire their ults every 30 seconds."

Ezreal's ult has an 80 second CD. I get 40% CDR on both AP and AD Ezreal. That puts his ult CD at 48 seconds. His Q reduces all his CDs by 1 when it hits, including the Q cooldown/ At max CDR it has a 2.4 second CD, 1.4 if it hits.

Every 1.4 seconds Ezreal reduces his ult CD by 1. I can easily fire my ult every ~20 seconds. Much faster than Lux, and has a higher AP scaling.

Fadedpf6/2/2015, 4:22:44 AM2 votes

Shes good but is the epitome of "mages have high cool downs and mana costs but make up for it with utility and damage" Literally any buff to make her mana problems better would make her perfect imo

Vier6/2/2015, 7:27:57 AM2 votes

Please answer Riot you're ignoring all threads about Lux, I for one don't care about buffs I just wanna know that Riot's balance team actually remembers her.

Demacian Laser6/2/2015, 8:42:01 PM2 votes

She's strong? Try play against Fizz Leblanc Zed ...

Timesz6/2/2015, 11:39:17 PM1 votes

Don't get me wrong on this, but I think Lux's issues isn't her mana problems, but her primary itemization paths. Right now, if you itemize the Big 3 (Ludens/Rabadons/Zhonyas) you get more power for your mana but you become blue buff intensive. If you optimize for mana regeneration, your damage suffers tremendously but you're able to get your spells off faster and sooner.

My solution is honestly just go with two Doran Rings (pretend you're Diana) and straight up grab Ludens to help your wave clear (adding 100 damage to 4 targets)

With two Dorans you gain 6 mana per 5. Which is 1.2 mana per second. At level 7, Lux naturally has 9.9 mana/5 (Essentially 2 per second) so you have 3.2 mana per second ticking during the CD of Lucent (10 seconds, which means you regenerate 3.2x10 = 32 total mana) on top of the potential to have 8x6 (sometimes 7) = 48 mana regenerated from last hitting minions with a grand total between Lucent Singularities being 130 - 80 = 50 mana used. (NOTE this isn't taking into account the possibility of having either the Utility Tree passive 3 mana per 5 or the Offence Tree's 1 Mana per minion.)

Not to mention every 30 seconds minions spawn, so if you're just wave clearing you can keep your mana pool up and ready for skirmishes.

Lux is in an interesting place right now because she’s not necessarily weak, but she isn’t exactly the strongest either. She has some pretty obvious strengths and weaknesses - amazing utility with all her CC, AoE shield, and an amazing low cooldown ult, but relatively long early cooldowns, high mana costs, highly immobile and a clunky passive.

I think the biggest issue I have with Lux is that everyone single one of her skills requires her to stop moving in order to cast and for a mage who’s already immobile in the first place, this is a huge crutch. She has no effective way of getting away and her shield is useless when she’s being chased (mostly due to the small amount it shields her, for the long time she has to stand still to cast it). Basically, she has very unreliable disengage and positioning is HUGE for her.

My other issue is with her passive is practically useless out of the laning phase. I think it should either be able to be procc’ed by allies or at least do something more, like grant true vision. She technically shouldn’t ever be in range to proc a passive with an AA in teamfights, but that’s also a huge chunk of her damage gone.

I think Lux is just in general, a little outdated. I don’t think her kit needs a rework, she just needs small tweaks like updating mana costs, etc. She’s not played as often simply because there are other champs who are so much easier to play in terms of positioning and give much less migraines when it comes to mana.

Also, support Lux has 2 issues - mana and her ult. She’s too much of a mana whore to be effective in bot lane and her ult brings no utility to the team. Her AoE shield is cool, but the 35% AP scaling isn’t all that great, especially compared to Janna’s Eye of the Storm which gives you 240 health (which is 60 health more than Lux’s) +70% AP scaling and an AD buff (or even Karma’s shield). (Yes, Lux’s shield is AoE, but we all know how our teammates all turn into Faker whenever we try to shield them.) Plus her shield is a skillshot, not instantaneous one like Janna’s or Karma’s.

Carniverous6/2/2015, 7:27:46 AM1 votes

Her passive getting an AP ratio helpped. But she dose really need a new one. And, I honestly feel like her Big AoE slow is too large. Eearly and late game, it's a hard to dodge skill shot. It's fat, like all 6 minions in a wave fat.

-Exaggerating, I don't play Lux. I do like her kit a lot though.

misfortunas6/3/2015, 12:12:46 PM1 votes

I can't stand her, but I think she is okay... I seriously hate laning against a good Lux, but she is squishy and has high mana costs.

lDontLiftIcarry6/2/2015, 11:35:12 AM1 votes

I think that lux is balanced only because of her stupidly high mana costs. really nothing else balances her. She's exstremely viable espically with her ult being up 24/7 it lets her roam very well if you're a high elo lux player then you'll time your ult cd with moving towards bot while jungler moves towards bot. Making it and immediate 4v2 and once their flashes are down you just return in 60 seconds when ult is back up and kill someone It's very annoying to play against an intelligent lux player who's only real counter is "lol my high mana costs"

She's not over powered, but by no means would I like to see buffs to her.

Espically when her ult still has huge fucking clarity issues with how big the hitbox is going to be when its cast at you to this day half her skins still make the ult look fucking wierd.

I've still taken 400+ damage from a rank 1 lux ult so her damage is fine.

61413860_DEL6/2/2015, 1:29:17 PM1 votes

Her main problem is the mana cost of everything. Why should her e cost so much when it doesn't even do as much dmg as her ult, which is only 100 mana? Also her cooldowns are ridiculously long. I love playing her, but still.

BodyByDave6/2/2015, 5:24:59 PM1 votes

xLyo6/3/2015, 3:11:54 PM1 votes

i do not like passive. her passive is basically opposite for the rest of kit. she is ranged mage. rest of the kit is okay. if you dodge q, you easily will dodge her e. her ult is visible before detonating so you can dodge it as well. she is okay. :)

warpenguin5556/1/2015, 10:12:50 PM1 votes

Sexy

ok but she does need her E mana cost dropped down. at rank 3 it costs the same as her ult 4-5 more

Only Play Darius6/1/2015, 10:15:03 PM1 votes

Well, she is one of the hardest scaling mages in the game. Her long range damage can get ridiculous once she gets decent items, and lets not forget the 30 second cooldown on that gigantic AOE nuke. She suffered in the assassin meta, but now that it's a tank meta I think she is better off, even though she is more bursty than sustained damage, but a good Lux can hard carry her team as long as they make an effort to protect her. I think the main problem with her is that even though her late game damage is devastating, people in the LCS are capable of ending the game well before she gets half built, which is why she sees no competitive play.

GundayMonday6/2/2015, 9:10:29 PM1 votes

I started playing her as a 9 - 0 - 21 support with ancient coin for my support item. I don't run out of mana with her and can scale into a late game damage dealer. She feels pretty strong this patch and I'm having fun playing her!

TwitchInMyPants6/1/2015, 10:09:03 PM1 votes

Her damage, CDs and scaling are fair

Her MS is super slow

Her mana costs are absurd

Lugg6/1/2015, 8:16:54 PM1 votes

Lux is pretty balanced except for one thing IMHO. Her ult either needs a longer CD or reduced damage. At max rank it's up every 30 seconds with max CDR. That is way too short for an ult that does that much damage.
