How do you "build for the game"?

I know that i may seem stupid for asking but something that I have yet to fully understand is how to build for the game. I understand the basics as in if they have a lot of tanks build armor pen etc. What i want to know is how do you tell when its better to get a shiv over rapid fire or things along those lines. I mainly play ad carry and would love to learn more about this. Thanks!!

Variations in build, are usually done to offer different powerspikes. The ghost blade/Black cleaver build on Lucian, tends to give him an earlier advantage, compared to his ER/crit build, which offers more late game power.

Your other options really depend on what you need. Not quite as obvious as "Build LW to counter tanks," but to answer your question, the difference between shiv, and RFC, is going to be whether you need extra reach for your poke, or more wave clear.

Thank you for the help! I wasn't asking for just shiv and rapid, those were just the easiest example i could think of. But i understand what you're saying with how to build. Again thanks for helping :D

Well, for one thing, RFC is great for sieging. What's sieging? Its when your team groups up around a particular tower and takes several waves to actually grab it. If this is the sort of thing you're good at, RFC is great, because it lets you take more pot-shots at enemies/the tower for free. Shiv is awesome for waveclearing and team fighting, since, you know, it makes your autos AoE. If you're a carry that can build either of these (read: a carry that DOESNT build Runaan's), these are things to consider. You basically look at the enemy comp and think "Am I going to be able to siege towers?" If they have awesome wave clear (Viktor, Lulu, Sivir, etc.) you probably aren't going to be able to do that too often and should probably look for the Shiv, and inversely if the enemy probably isn't going to get into too many team fights (maybe they have a lot of Assassins) you can grab the RFC for those scenarios. These are just a few of the intricacies of building in game (it doesn't even cover all the reasons to build either RFC or Shiv)

Thank you so much :D I will try using this in more games instead of doing "default" builds.

Basically building to contend with the enemy threats.

Getting Mortal reminder against a team that will heal a shit ton or building armor or MR based on the enemy team.

Even things like Rushing Maw to better contend with a LeBlanc is "building for the game"

Basically deciding what you build not based on what is the most "ideal" build for the champ but instead for the situation.

If a Viegar is going to blow you up you might consider a Banshee's veil.

As for the more item spicifics like shiv VS rapid fire it is a matter of what you will be doing.

Rapidfire is a better siege option but shiv is a better wave clear option.

Building for the game is building items to shore up your weaknesses against the enemy team comp, or to drill holes in their defenses, or to double-down on an overall strategy like split-pushing or sieging, or to focus on a particular playstyle for your champ depending on your needs.

Compare Shiv and RFC. Both are good for poking, though Shiv does more damage, especially once you build more crit. Shiv also helps quite a bit with waveclear. RFC, on the other hand, offers a range advantage, as well as the ability to poke down turrets, particularly in a siege situation.

As a marksman, you'll often be trying to take down towers. If you're planning to build Shiv or RFC, make your decision based on how the game seems to be playing out. Are you grouping with your team to pressure one lane at a time? RFC, so you can chip away at the tower effectively even if the enemy team is defending it. Are you frequently pushing lanes by yourself, taking towers while your team holds their attention elsewhere? Take Shiv, so you can blow up minion waves quickly and sprint down that lane or rejoin your team more quickly.
