New Runes Changed My Life. I'm no longer addicted to League

GOOGLE RECRUITER·11/18/2017, 9:27:12 PM·89 votes·5,477 views

I used to spend hours in the runes and masteries page just doing theory crafting and coming up with super fun off Meta builds like 20% CD galio with extended buff duration in the jungle (hilarious fast team protection!) Or AP alistar support with maxed out MS to catch Squishies. Or super scalable armor malphite or tank Fizz xD where I felt so awesome late game cause ADCs would KNOW that I stacked armor lol.

Anyways enough of my addicted times. This isn't a hate on the runes but actually a thank you to Rito. By simplifying the runes to become one with masteries I no longer have to spend time thinking about custom builds for a specific champ. I can now use the Meta runes you want me to use so I can quickly play a game without thinking*. Winning or losing is Way faster now like 10-15 min, giving you time to prep a healthy meal, exercise, and perhaps come back to the game later or hang out with friends.

With that said I no longer feel this obligation to play that much anymore (doesn't feel like work) as I can just go in casually now cause it doesn't feel as competitive, strategic or customizable.

I found myself playing less and less since the release. I don't know what you guys did but now I spend that time I used for theory crafting playing new games and just exploring life.

League used to take up 70% of my life but now it's like 5%!!! (My asian parents will be proud since I have control over my life not league). I simply don't get that crave or urge anymore mainly from the variety of ways to tune a champion to your very own unique playstyle that made me come home from work and play.

Sorry if the post came off as confusing and neutral. For me I love the game and you guys did something great: made me stop playing as much and helped with my addiction. Thank you

lol whether you want to admit it or not, this is definitely passive aggressive..

but, I do agree with what you're saying, it's honestly really nice to not feel glued to the game anymore. My first time ever feeling like a casual league gamer since starting the game back in season 3, and it's actually pretty refreshing!

mosaickle11/18/2017, 9:33:53 PM20 votes

I've actually been on other games more too

MangelinaJolie11/18/2017, 11:29:30 PM16 votes

Same.

When I’m playing Call of Duty instead of League of Legends you know there’s something that went seriously wrong with the game.

The new runes are pretty worthless. In addition to that the game is now a pay to play environment. You don't get anything as you play games and when you rank you don't get anything worth the damn then either. I get 2 - 4 things when I rank. Every time so far I've gotten multiple copies of the same champ shard and then a couple of random others. All of which I already own. Oh, I get to disenchant them, for next to nothing. Yay.

I haven't even seen a skin shard since the new system went live. A while back I created another account just to mess around with but at this rate it's going to take forever just to own a champ I actually want to play. Definitely don't feel the need to waste my time.

Oh, why the hell can't I disenchant these stupid ass ward skins I get?

Holy smokes. Hey congrats man good to see fellow addicts quit.

deadlychuck11/19/2017, 12:04:17 AM8 votes

I've got to wonder how making their game more appealing to less dedicated players, what you refer to as "casual" in the post, when people are only playing maybe 1-2 games a week, will they really be willing to waste money on a skin that they will basically never see?

inuitmailman11/18/2017, 10:42:34 PM8 votes

SAme here man same here

Penns11/18/2017, 9:35:59 PM8 votes

same, i dont want to play league at all anymore until riot nerfs press the attack and gives ap champs better items and reverts fizz hehe xd

Kal Vas Flam11/19/2017, 12:38:44 AM4 votes

That's a good thing I guess. I mean, spending hours coming up with inefficient rune pages was probably never a good investment of your time lol. Good luck.

I actually quite enjoy my role as a dedicated moderate casual. But now that the reward system is grinding based it really hurts my heart to know that i can play 30-40 games and only end up with about 400 BE. 400BE is 5 games in the old system. I Don't disagree with streamlining currency, I think that was long overdue, but it doesn't make sense to blend a consistent reward currency (ip) with an optional currency (be) and make it so hard to grind.

I think the essence reward system needs to be reverted, but not split back up. My ideal reward system would be slightly less BE per match than ip before, say 50 instead of 75, but keep the level up rewards. That way, even if you get complete trash from the capsule you still have about 1000 be for your efforts.

gabetheguy11/19/2017, 12:14:10 AM4 votes

so you're telling me that you can spend hours theorycrafting of where a max of like 500g worth of flat stats goes, but you can't do that with legitimately impactful runes?

MakeOutHiIIXXX11/19/2017, 12:24:11 AM3 votes

Same here

When you said that it is less competitive, strategic or customizable. You got everything wrong, the game is still massively competitive and all that. But there are still many people cloud to Lol, cause it is their job or it is for the LCS. The reason Lol is popular is that it is competitive, strategic and customizable.

Here is why, Competitive: Now that Assassins are strong again (I mean to the level of one shooting people like they are supposed too.), the game has gotten much more competitive. Strong ADC's can now be assassinated by skilled assassin players. Because the ADC is the damage to most teams, so if the ADC out it can cause havoc in team fights if utilized correctly. WIth the old runes, ADC's where way to strong unless if you could surprise one shoot them, which was never possible.

Strategic: Oh boy, now with the new runes it is finally about skill and not about who ran with a Faker rune and mastery page. Uh, the old system was horrible, two damage masteries where useful, Thunderlord or Fervor of Battle, for supports, if you did not run with the ", forgot the name of the mastery" you were basically trolling. Everything else was either too weak or never useful for anything really. Unless if we talk about the Resolve tree then, yeah, all three were useful. With the new Runes, you can try to throw off your opponent with building a marksman bruiser, with the resolved tree and go precision or domination, or the other way around. Try Lux with Sorcery and Resolve its fun and works quite well.

Customizable: Just like I said in the strategic. It is way more customizable now.

Dude, the reason you are leaving the game is that your not the competitive type. You like to have fun, and now with the new runes your having more fun with your friends. Because you can be customizable, without having to be competitive or super strategic. This new system works for competitive and non-competitive players, and I love it. Because if I had a stressful day I can sit down and play a draft game without having to try hard. (Because most people do not try hard in a draft game. But that depends on game to game.) When I want to be competitive I can now show off my skill with my champion and how I use the runes. The old system was about how good you were with the masteries and runes, now it is about how you play your champion and what type of playstyle you have.

You want to play one shoot assassin, you can. Want to play a busier assassin, you can. Tank marksman, you can.

Trust me, I play for competition and for fun. I want to try and get into a pro team and win the championship, but when I finally get my OBS to work I want to play for fun with you all.

Riot took the correct turn with the Runes. And to be honest not all games go 15 - 20 minutes, that is if the enemy or your team are garbage. Most games I play, last for 25 - 40 minutes. And I love them long. Truth be told, I hate finishing a game in 15 minutes.

But that is different form person to person. ;)

Cheers.

this is funyn cause actualy i think its the exact diffrent. Kinda. Maybe you thought which runepages you wanted casue you were limited to 20. Or which ruens you want to buy next for diffrent playstyles. But playing while not taking the game lenght inf ocus should not make you play less if you think about it more. It makes now so much less sense to copy pros. Ofc you can do it but actualy you can now try so much diffrent thigns in runes and still be able to win games. Even in High Elo, not just running the listed Pages or things like "crit dmg, -%death tim, etc" in bronze-dia.

The thing is: You just have to think now even more about it. Maybe thats it, you don't think automaticaly about the actual runes and play less. It is no longe about just Numbers like damage, Tankyness, cdr etc. Its realy about Utility. Do i want the Damage, the Movementspeed from Phase Rush, the Slow from the Inspiration Tree, the Gold from the Inspiration tree on champ x. The whole Inspiration Tree could be theorycrafted on every champion. Even things like Press the Attack adc Soraka with spellvamp from the Domination Tree and geting real attackspeed from Prescision. Its just more work for the brain.

Not that i want to increase your addiction again (sry if i have done it with that). You can ofc just copy the pros or go champion.gg. Cause pros would now even more try diffrent things. On odl system you barly see diffrent runes. Now this can easily happen (beside keystones maybe, but actual secodnary paths you now have a choice from 4 paths and not like old masteries from 2. Every path gives you the choice from 2 out of 9 instead of picking 2 things out of 4. Main tree even 4 out of 12 instead of 5 out of 12 (yea you could split up but all amsteries were less strong).

PePsiLemoNN11/19/2017, 8:38:29 AM2 votes

It's exactly the other way around but ok.

6Sfool11/19/2017, 12:48:45 PM2 votes

Odd. I find it more fun to work out new rune pages. To me old runes were completely solved and the masteries were too obvious. Each was a little tweak that benefited one type of champ, like picking ability damage or attack speed. That's been chosen by whether I'm playing an adc or a mage. Now I can pick from 3+ keystones for every champ, and in most cases the lesser runes give us choice.

Fairyfleur11/19/2017, 2:01:30 AM2 votes

There's way more critical thinking now, though? Unless you were trying to go an off-meta build you would take the same or almost the same exact runes and masteries every single game on most champions.

Also, we have plenty of scaling runes. Legend scales with takedowns, same for the Hunter runes, Gathering Storm scales as the game goes up, Eyeball collectively boosts your damage as you gain assists, ward kills, and kills, Ultimate Hat reduces your ult cooldown with use, Transcendence grants you 10% cdr after ten minutes, Conditioning gives you armor and mr after ten minutes, Overgrowth increases your HP with how much farm you have, and Magical Footwear hands you some free boots after ten minutes too.

There are tons of runes that scale into the mid to late-game, and you're ignoring them; the most notable being Gathering Storm and Overgrowth.

There is more macro-oriented theorycrafting to be done now though.

Apply yourself, I believe you can become a league addict again
