Ask Riot the Trust Question and Aatrox

https://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/community/q/ask-riot-trust-question-and-aatrox This is a very old interview done with riot I dug up...have a look for yourselves.

What are your thoughts on Aatrox? He feels like he is in a horrible state and could use some buffs or a rework.

"We'd like to do some significant work on Aatrox when we do a class update to diving fighters. Aatrox has a theme with an enormous amount of potential. At present, however, his gameplay is a bit generic, doing a mix of things plenty of other fighters also do. That means, unless he's the best at those things, he's not going to be the best pick gameplay wise. Our goal with an update, as a result, would be to make him more unique, taking advantage of his backstory and letting him bring some distinct tools to a team."

"We'd also like to do some work before then, both to help him out slightly (he's a little on the weak side) and at least start to push him in a more focused direction. At a rough guess, sometime around the pre-season is when we'll likely look at that. Aatrox has a theme with an enormous amount of potential" this is true

"HIs gameplay is a bit generic, doing a MIX of things PLENTY of other FIGHTERS also do. That means, unless he's the best at those things, he's not going to be the best pick gameplay wise."

**Soooo Riven Q knockups, some slow chain thing that has nothing to do with his asthetic? And an Ult that is just get a bit faster and stronger with a GA? And add one little unique thing like damage shields? **

"Make him more unique, taking advantage of his backstory and letting him bring some distinct tools."

Well in the lore the army gained immense bloodlust and became stronger. What if his ult incited bloodlust in your allies to do more damage or have some unique passive while his ult was active? He was huge in the release vid, why not make him grow bigger based on the blood he consumed to...stick to Asthetic?

This was just my little sense on Aatrox since he used to be my main, and honestly the new rework is LAZY and I could come up with something better in a week then they did in YEARS...thanks.

P https://youtu.be/OWoU34V-r3U Plenty of Champs that have a passive that makes their auto do more dmg etc, not that it is bad; the new shield cut is interesting though seems like its very situational. You can do the same thing with Jhin's entire kit. Hell, when he first came out, there was plenty of people out there comparing the similarities between his kit and other peoples (like Cait, Kat, others). When they say

HIs gameplay is a bit generic, doing a MIX of things PLENTY of other FIGHTERS also do. That means, unless he's the best at those things, he's not going to be the best pick gameplay wise."

You're reading into it too literally. It's more about his gameplay, than his kit. Why play Aatrox, when Jax has more reliable CC, sustain from items, and defenses, with sustained damage to boot? His Q, doesn't move him per cast save the third, and knocks up on each attack. His W is meant for Single target CC, to keep an opponent from getting away. How his dash interacts with his kit, keeps it unique.

The idea that something needs to be entirely unique to give someone a distinct reason to be picked, is a faulty idea and ignores how the gameplay actually works and plays with.

If they put this new shit rework in the official servers i will uninstall my game fast as fuck boy

Not to mention that his new q looks and feels exactly like that of a character from A DIFFERENT GAME, in HOTS there's a character with the exact same q down to the indicator.

How does a company like Riot who comes up with amazing unique well developed new characters and reworks. Butcher someone they have been looking at and is a community favorite to be reworked for over 2 goddamn years? It just doesnt make sense to me, its like they turned it into a quick "Oh they are on our back about aatrox lets throw something out there for the sheep to lap up."

It just doesnt make sense to me, its like they turned it into a quick "Oh they are on our back about aatrox lets throw something out there for the sheep to lap up." I mean even his model is pretty shit, it was better before the rework with more detail; now it looks like something out of a college 1st modeling class project.

This is such hardcore bullshit. I can't stomach half the stuff people are saying but this is pure bile.

His rework was never going to please everyone. They've been consistently updating lots of models to have less mesh (detail) and more smoothness so they support overall clarity. To say some "1st modeling class project" is so absurd and insulting. Have you ever done any 3d modeling in college? The way they've done this was completely intentional and have been doing this since Sion.

This is on purpose. They've said this is what they are moving towards for a long time. You don't even have to read forums to know that this is a trend they are going with and will stick with, so just throwing insults at them and their modeling team is just unhelpful and unfair.

New Aatrox has a sleeker look and I dig it.

"His rework was never going to please everyone" True enough but can we aim for above 15% of people? Like the vast majority of people I even talk to on this game dislike him greatly save for maybe one or two. Its just not popular from what I have seen, but maybe the people that do like it are just staying quiet. aside from you of course.

Some champs are more popular than others, but no champ is for everyone.

The majority of people love, Yorick, swains, ect reworks. Aside from galio I have not seen this many people get mad at rework in the short duration I have been playing, its obvious when you have THIS many people calling it out that they made a misstep, its ok to admit it and they can always fix it, I personally like his kit, and I can live with his look, I can't even come close to standing that voice though, viktor sounds fucking awesome, he rocks that Russian accent like a god, and this "Aatrox" sounds like a garbled meme on Instagram.

Awesome reply. I was implying it is okay if some champs are niche or have cult followings.

Honestly I don't hear the Russian, I hear similarities, but it doesn't have the distinct H and R sounds that Russian accents typically show. It sounds more Hungarian/Balkan areas to me than anything close to Russian

I am ignorant of the difference, I live in the southern part of America, that accent is extremely rare. I apologize.

I dont't think that 15% is accurate or will be represented when he goes live. I think his popularity will only increase and he will be seen in various levels of play more often. That's my prediction.

Darkone70011 votes

I was exaggerating, in all honesty its prolly more 50/50 with the people who dislike being more vocal, but I am very disappointed, he was one of the first high cost champions I bought because he looked awesome (Never mained him). I just think this is not the best rework.

KuroCaliber3 votes

That's old lore, first of all. Second, at least now his gameplay isn't draintank by repeatedly slapping you with his spiked dildo.

SkieSin6 votes

So your response is they made him a bit more flashy and gave him some minor updated mechanics. And he isnt an auto attack champion anymore (Which isnt an issue their are lots of good auto champs and ways to make him good, not that the IDEA behind the new rework is a good direction) so riot did good? So he doesnt "slap people with a dildo" Well actually now he ACTUALLY Does. That indicator is like your "Dildo" you so gracefully mention, and its slow with no real thought behind it. Nothing Unique or something that sets him apart. Like the previous post had mentioned before.

KuroCaliber3 votes

Looking at your reply to the previous post aatrox was never a community favorite. His abilities had no weight relevant to his theme. His game play was tied to build as much lifesteal and atk speed as.possible so that he could use his pool noodle sword to undodgeably kill you.

He had stat-check gameplay that wasn't based on his theme as a warlord nor as a warrior. You know which melee champion revolves around their autos exclusively? Tryndamere, the berserker. Is that your clever, calm warlord? No. He required no mechanical skill and like old Swain skill expression lay within the micromanaging of uninteresting gameplay aspects such as toggling w.

His vo was terrible too, it was intentionally mysterious because he had no story. He was just a myth that appeared every so often in battle for unexplained reasons. Why? Because riot hadn't decided what darkin were yet. His lore was at best a plaelceholder until riot decided on a direction.

Older players always ended up creating headcanon based on the limited low quality lines on older champions. So the instant that those are replaced they are cursed to be disappointed because nothing riot releases will ever match up to everyone's headcannon for who aatrox is.

So if we're comparing kits here, old aatrox had the third part of riven q on his q, his w was an enhanced old irelia passive combined with an Onhit because damage, and e was a needlessly complex and slow skillshot made in that inferior shape for the sake of uniqueness. His ult was just a stat stick like nasus and renekton, and his passive was just a conditional and inferior guardian angel. So two can play at the generalizing game.

SkieSin5 votes

Your exactly right sooo why cant or hasnt riot put that "Unique" flare they wanted in this champion? Yes, people wanted a rework for him they wanted him to be good; the hidden mystery of the Darkin and aatrox was enticing. We have had many reworks that have set apart themselves, yorick, evelyn, galio, irelia, kat, reksai, sejuani, swain etc etc. There have been champions reworked with much more, personality; and for someone whos such a big impact to the lore (Darkin) Just feels so, meh; he doesnt do anything so deliciously good in comparison to other champions. Thats just the fact

PopcornBunni3 votes

Couldn't agree more. The rework feels like it was put together in an afternoon using code left over from the rest of the cast. Major shame on the developers behind the changes.

The Ecdysiast3 votes

This is just spam at this point. I don't know how little you actually have to be paying attention to not notice that you, yourself used a GIF for Riven's Q that shows exactly why they aren't similar.

aaronconlin2 votes

Honestly I’d be happy if they changed the Q to modified auto attacks with smaller AoE, removed the chain and put back his old poke with AP scaling and added some AP scaling damage to his ultimate activation. That way he could still benefit from on-hit builds and sustain, and items like guinsoo’s and gunblade. Also, I used to really like building AP on him for fun in normals.

I disagree

people like you are what annoys me, after 140~ champions everything doesn't have to be crazy unique and shit, id prefer the champions to go back on their "uniqueness" rather than forward at this point since riot seems to share your ideals.

CytheGuy1 votes

In this rework Riot traded the older, smaller playerbase for Aatrox in return for a larger, newer playerbase. Most old Aatrox players dislike him now and many people who plan on picking him up like how he looks. I'm in the boat with the older players personally. I also think it's kind of funny how old Aatrox is the perfect banner for shouting out against the rework. "Pain is temporary, victory is forever!"

GayFluffyUnicorn2 votes

Well to be fair riot does that to every low pickrate champ and it is honestly a shame. Compare irelia (and ignore her current overtuned state) to galio. Or swain. I find it quite saddening how riot shits on the players that loved the old niche champs like swain or galio (im one of the old swain players) and doesnt even hide it or try to atleast appeal to the old playerbase as well. That's why many of these reworks seem to me as a quick cashgrab and nothing else. Since if riot is actully reworking champs because they are unhealthy/toxic/archaic or simply don't fulfill their gameplay fantasy i ask you: where is tryndamere, pantheon, morde on that list? Neither swain nor galio were somehow gamebreakingly strong or unhealthy or even toxic. I might be biased but i played against my fair share of swain and idk how hard it is to punish someone with 18 base armor and 16 sec CD spells but whatever.

That said i'm actually hyped for aatrox. Sadly i cant play him on the PBE cuz riot randomly deleted my old pbe account. I hope they give him the love he deserves and make him a viable toplane pick even in dia+ unlike many other juggernauts.
