Why does riot try so hard to...

Keep new players from being able to actually play champions and thus enjoy the game more?

The champion pool for new players is ridiculously small and even after the entire 1-30 grind I'm sure most players have about 10 owned champions from the pool of 134.

I'm not exactly sure how to make it better, but champion access by new players needs to increase at least two fold

They’ve already increased the number of champions that are free to play in rotation by 10 champs. I’m not saying you shouldn’t complain, but it’s a business. Riot needs to make money somehow.

They got their money from lcs ,boosts and skins.Nobody buys champs with rp anyway.

riot is a small indie company kapp

A small indie company now owned by a large Chinese company named Tencent. So I don't think that counts as indie anymore.

Riot does make money off of only 3 things, aesthetic, boosts, champions.

They want you to buy champs.

Edit: Removed some monks

This is my thinking as well. Riot has many more sources of revenue than just champions, and has plenty of untapped potential when it comes to exploring other avenues, besides locking away gameplay assets in a competitively-oriented game. Chromas, for example, are notorious for being a cheap way for Riot to sell stuff based on a preexisting skin, and it feels like the company could easily take a page out of HotS, and instead release chromas and the original skin as individually-priced, separate skins (which should ideally be a bit cheaper, too). Similarly, whereas Heroes and Dota have rather generous rewards systems, League is notoriously stingy, even though giving out free content in free-to-play games has been proven to encourage purchases. On top of this, there are entire avenues of content Riot hasn't explored at all, such as selling map skins, minion skins, announcer packs (which many players are practically begging for at this point, especially since several exist in-game already), and so on. To me, it feels like Riot focusing more on champions is less a question of champion purchases being necessary for the game to live, and more a question of Riot relying on an outdated and short-sighted business model, one whose lack of competitiveness relative to alternatives has pushed them only further down that track. I also suspect there's a fair amount of legacy code and poor tech preventing Riot from releasing entirely new products at its store for the moment, which to me also comes across as bizarre, considering how one would normally have every interest in keeping the store as functional as possible.

Truth of the matter is, we don't know what riot is doing/does. Its a giant mystery. This is the most upset the community has been in probably forever.

There are tons more ways to make revenue, there are tons of ways they could change and balance the game, there are tons of things they could do... they just dont...

IT'S MATH TIME:

So, leveling from 1-30 nets you 3 free champs, Ashe, Garen, and Brand. You can also get Alistar and Tristana for free, so that's 5 champs. Now, with the level 1-30 rewards you get 14 champion shards of various levels. Counting the level 5 reward as 1350 champion shard, you get 6 1350 champion shards, 3 450 champion shards, 3 3150 champion shards and 3 4800 champion shards.

Now, let's assume that you hate every champion shard you get, and you decide to melt them all down to BE. You'd garner 6660 BE from all of that. Now, you add the various BE rewards you get from leveling, and that brings your BE total to 19310. Which is enough for you to buy 42 450 champions, or 14 1350 champions, or 6 3150 champions, or 4 4800 champions, or 3 6300 champions.

So, if you simply upgrade the shards you get, you'd get around 20 champions, and then whatever you got from your glorious capsule. You'd also have some amount of BE left, but I don't feel like calculating that. If you didn't and instead decided to buy the champs you wanted specifically, you would be able to afford less, but quality over quantity amirite. If you add to that the current 14 free rotation champs, you are looking at potentially 34 champions without spending a dime on the game, which is pretty good.

They removed alistar and tristana

you can still send a ticket to their support and they give you those skins(and the champions) for free

you didn't mention that theres only smurfs from 1-30 :d

I heard you get Jinx for free now as a level up reward? Can anybody confirm this?

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

It's possible, but it's still a 1/140 chance.

FutureCreator1 votes

I'm frustrated with the preset free champions they give you when you level up. I made a new account on the NA server and wanted to buy a champion, but I can't even start raising the huge amount of BE required until like level 10. I don't need Brand and Garen and Ashe. I want to play the champions that interest me, if I need to pick a champion for a certain role there's always the free-to-play roster.

Jerry SeinfeId2 votes

that's like a smurf only problem, so it doesn't matter.

FutureCreator4 votes

I mean, is it? When you make a new account and see a champion you like you immediately want to play them, or at least start saving up to buy them. I know I did that with Kha'Zix and Elise when I first started. It just feels annoying to get 0 BE for like 10 levels.

Ultîma2 votes

Agreed. I would have been far less interested in League back when I started if I couldn't acquire Vlad and Malzahar (who were both 6300 ip at the time).

Jerry SeinfeId1 votes

i mean i guess, idk. Jinx is free till like lvl 5 and i'm pretty sure i already managed to buy her around lvl 10.

You should get a ticket to buy any champion you want. One time use. I remember I literally only joined league of legends because I watched a video of someone playing Annie, and I thought "wow that looks like a fun game/character to play." For a lot of people, the champions are what brings them into the game. If they see a streamer/youtuber/whatever play a certain champion, they want to join the game to play said champion but might be turned off by the fact that it can be extremely hard to acquire them.

FutureCreator1 votes

Can't upvote this enough.

LXII1 votes

It can also be extremely easy to acquire them too.. just gotta crack open that wallet.

Which is likely the entire reason it's such a pain to get champs now.
