Makes the Game Not Fun: Yi in URF

IP Pants··17 votes·3,670 views

If you've played AR U.R.F. you've probably played against MasterYi . Now, I understand, it's URF, so why am I even complaining. For the most part, I agree, URF is a fun break from everything and doesn't really matter. However, what's not fun is a guaranteed loss in the loading screen. Here are the scores of the enemy Yi in my last three games he was in, check the match history:

8/22/17 - 26/5/1 8/21/17 - 15/7/4 8/20/17 - 26/3/1

What's more interesting in those stats are the assists. You notice how there are hardly any? That means Yi is roaming around the map deleting anyone he comes across, not even participating in team fights. With <1 second cooldown on his spells, he's practically untargettable during the entire time of an engage.

"Legendary" - 9/0/0 before 6:00 into game, final Yi score 42/2/7:

https://youtu.be/_-rESVgvWeo?t=4m

To RIOT: I notice Sona and Ryze have been heavily weighted not to be rolled, for similar reasons of unfairness, at least do the same for Yi.

Story time.

I played an urf game on an alt account the other day. Our team was.

Lulu Maokai Ashe Camille Ezreal

Vs

Ahri Braum Janna Khazix MasterYi

My team took one look at yi and it was over before it began. Not a single item on our team was bought. We knew the game was unwinnable so we decided not to buy a single item and just stand the fountain and let them push. We told the enemy team we did not want to deal with urf yi and they understood and were nice enough to push as fast as they could. In the meantime all 10 of us talked about movies and anime.

When they got to the nexus Yi fountain dove us with Q and got a penta with it lol.

No one was reported and the game was over quickly.

The moral of the story: yi is so broken on urf he makes the game mode a joke to the point where some enemy teams wont even try to play the match if hes in it.

But... Having Lulu on your team means you actually had someone who could reliably deal with him. And Maokais got the targeted snare which he should wait out Yis first Q for, along with more snares and a knockup.

you'd think so but he actually dodges those skills when he re-enters alpha so, no not really.

LuxannaVeritas1 votes

You're literally viewing his alpha strike just like how the whole boards view Yasuo's wind wall in normal games.

It's not up all of the time. Just wait until he uses it to CC him.

You're not doing the math:

Yi alpha strikes, it has 3 sec cooldown, unless he auto-attacks, which lowers cooldown 1 sec per strike. At ~1.5 attack speed, he can alpha stike every 2 seconds.

Watch the example video in my original post. He just runs around the map finding someone to press Q on.

While I won't say Yi is't broken on Urf, I will be the first to say that he isnt invincible. A single polymorph from lulu woild have killed him. Your team could have beat the Yi.

Yi can literally dodge Lulu's W because it's a projectile.

LuxannaVeritas1 votes

Then just Polymorph him after his alpha strike?

His alpha strike alone isn't going to get a pentakill.

IP Cloudy2 votes

That's the issue. It sounds good to say, "Just polymorph him and BOOM. Dead Yi." In practice, the CD on Alpha Strike is so low that there just isn't time to cast and spell and for the projectile to hit Yi before he can AS again and negate the spell. That's why he's broken. He is essentially untargetable for 99% of the time, so without a Leona Q or something is extremely difficult to even land hard CC on him. And none of this takes skill on Yi's part. It's URF, so he WILL scale - played well or not.

LuxannaVeritas1 votes

Question: does CDR still work in URF?

Without CDR, the cool down of Master Yi's Q at max rank in an ARURF game is 2.8 seconds. Polymorph can reach targets in under 1 second, so I really don't see how Yi can avoid the polymorph with his Alpha Strikes unless he focuses the Lulu in a team fight.

WAIT I just realized that basic attacks reduce cool down by one second OK that explains it.

IP Pants1 votes

This is exactly how I feel when he comes up. Like I said, "guaranteed loss in the loading screen."

Cavesloth2 votes

I've never seen a Yi lose in ARURF. High elo players say things like oh polymorph him as lulu, number one I can't PICK lulu since its arurf, 2 even if i do polymorph him it doesn't matter in low elo, hes gonna shit on my team no matter if I do well or not.

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes
  1. Lulu Polymorph dicks on him.

  2. Ashe stun coulda led into a team followup instakill.

  3. Maokai W and R roots keep him from being able to cast Alpha.

  4. AP Ezreal can oneshot Yi and anyone else for that matter.

Camille is SoL. But that's 4/5 members that can deal with Yi when played right. Moral of the story: they didn't play right.

You never played against a good Fiora if you think Yi is a problem

IP Cloudy4 votes

Yeah, but you don't need to be good on Yi. Right click + Q spam wins games.

Except Yi is mechanically difficult.

What?

IP Cloudy1 votes

He's not mechanically difficult. I just about timing. When timing is <1 sec, any difficulty goes out the window. Lee Sin is mechanically difficult. There is a reason there's no "Insec" for Master Yi. Or any of the wicked Pro outplays we've seen from Zed or Azir or Lucian or any other champion whose skill order and positioning and target priority mean the difference between a pentakill and a gray screen.

Melledoneus4 votes

Trundle is worse. If you're melee you can't fight him.

Aσtsuke5 votes

Thing is, melee or ranged you can't fight Yi, so he's not worse.

Melledoneus3 votes

Trundle can. So can Vi. Xin Zhao eats Yi alive. Diana deletes him.

Synnx76 votes

Not sure if we play the same game but Yi needs just to press Q and auto once for 1500 dmg + , instantly in my last game yi did a penta when everyone were spread like 300 yards one from another. Yomuu and ult ftw

Melledoneus2 votes

And Trundle has enough damage and durability to outlast and destroy Yi.

Synnx73 votes

I guess u saw that Yi does literally 1k truedmg/hit at 1.98 AS

Melledoneus2 votes

Trundle's Q cuts AD. So less true damage. He also steals resistances. More damage mitigation and less time for Yi to survive. Juggle Yi on ice pillars and you win a fight handily.

Perhaps it's just my low elo, but every game I've played as Trundle I've faced Yi. And I've beaten him handily every time.

Tarquin961 votes

Melledonees im gonna trigger you now, shen is the worst champion or champion concept ever made

Melledoneus1 votes

Agreed. And I love him for it.

NLGG3R BEATER1 votes

Diana deletes Yi? What can she possibly hope to accomplish against a yi with item 3156 item 3046 item 3812 item 3031 item 3508? On the other hand he can 2-shot her.

All it takes is item 3143 and Xin is useless vs Yi, URF or not.

Trundle might seem theoretically tougher than Yi but if Yi has item 3153 item 3124 item 1419 and 6 rageblade stacks Trundle will get melted in 2 seconds; Yi does way too much true and %hp damage with this build while sitting at 2.5 AS, resistances is irrelevant vs him.

LuxannaVeritas1 votes

Unless you've played Trundle in ARURF, I suggest that you stop arguing a point that you have no clue about.

Cavesloth1 votes

Well lets be fair the reason Xin Zhao can eat him alive is hes just as cancerous in urf as Yi. He just happens to have more shit that can shut him down, but Yi isn't one of them.

OyddAWqJ5r3 votes

There are several champions far more broken than Yi. In fact, tons of them BEAT Yi. And even more of them that beat Yi do it even harder with a support.

Supports are the truly most broken thing in URF when paired with a broken URF champ.

Taric Swain Zilean Garen Karma Jax etc.

And those 3 dumpster Yi on their own. There are several others, Fiora, Evelynn, SA Kayn, Pantheon. The list goes on.

IP Pants2 votes

All champs are broken in URF, that's not the complaint. With all those champs you refer to, at least there is a way to outplay them. With Yi, when the ult is up, he just runs at you until in range of alpha strike and just mashes Q. There is such a small margin of time from when he's actually targettable, unlike the other champs in your list.

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

That "small margin of time" is beyond enough to take him down during. There is beyond room for outplay. He gets outright dicked on half the time when people know what they're doing.

And the condition for outplaying ANYONE in URF is completely subjective based on the champ you are playing. As it stands, Yi is on the lower end of having the most favorable matchups and especially teamfight situations.

Renekton destroys him during that alpha window. As does Jax. And XinZhao. And Pantheon. And Fiora. And Gragas. And Fizz. And Kayn. And Nasus. And Lulu. And MonkeyKing. And anyone else who can CC him right away for an ally to oneshot.

Friendly Ram3 votes

He should be renamed master QQ for urf.

SzGamer2272 votes

Some champs can beat Yi. I've seen him get burst by a Quinn and rendered nearsighted before he could alpha. I've 1v1'd him as AP Blitz. Veigar stands a chance against him if you zone him with cage.

IP Pants1 votes

This gets to the exact point though. If you don't land some extremely precise combo, and kill Yi with it, you're done. There is never a chance for battle or a duel. No matter the champion. Why? Because he's untargettable 90% of the time in an engage. And oh, the engage lasts 1.3 seconds.

SzGamer2271 votes

Not arguing that Yi isn't busted. It feels really good when you win against a Yi though, and having played AR URF every day it's been up this week, I've seen it happen several times. He makes games a lot less fun when you play against him, but it's URF, really sucky games against really broken champs are to be expected, and he's not a guaranteed win.

Yi is probably the most consistent source of unfun games in URF though, since so many people own him and he has a high chance of rolling. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing him weighed down.

LuxannaVeritas2 votes

Honestly, there are so many annoying and unfun champions in ARURF that I simply hate the mode due to it only coming down to luck and balancing issues.

0ctavia1 votes

I love this mode :)

LuxannaVeritas1 votes

I can see how some people have fun in URF modes. It does seem like a lot is happening all the time...

I'm a type of person who loves strategy though, and I just don't see the strategy in this mode. Randomness just messes up the teams so much; you can't do much if you get a champion not well suited for URF. Yet, if they remove the randomness then we're just going to see the same 20-30 champions each game...

If I may ask, why do you like ARURF? And before you say it's fun, could you please explain why you find the game mode fun? I'm pretty sure there's something about how I like the play LOL that's the reason why I'm not impressed.

0ctavia1 votes

I like the pace of it and that I don't have to worry as much about cool downs or mana that I can use my skills for any champion quickly and although I know some champions are more challenging to manage every champion can be beat each other with the right tactics and good team work. I like the pace of it more or less and I did see strategy involved but it is different and more messy - I do agree with that.

0ctavia2 votes

When I play Karma I can beat Yi, when I play Sejuani I can beat yi... depends on the champion. It is annoying to get dove under the tower but IDK find a way to beat him. Yi does not mean guaranteed win or loss.

Ive done more broken things with garen. item 3071 item 3053 item 3111 item 3742 item 3065 item 3075

than any other champ this urf cycle, durability from W, sticking power w/ stormraiders and his E just melting ppl.

Every time ive been garen I have been top damage dealt to champs and top damage taken, with an absurd amount of kills.

Sohleks1 votes

The only champion that really needs to be looked at on urf is Fiora. She has the highest winrate and is pretty close to unbeatable. You can't really kite her, mitigate her dmg, or easily cc her and her healing becomes insane. She's the one champ that ruins the game she's in.

just OK jungler1 votes

It's URF. Don't like it? Don't play it. Simple. It wasn't intended to be a balanced mode, if it was, there would be Ranked URF.

jannit0r1 votes

How to fix this?

Get rid of this AR bullshit and give everyone a ban. ARURF was supposed to stop OP champions and metas, but now it's just RNG on if you get said OP champ or not. And the worst part is that it decides games if the other team doesn't get any OP champs.

Give us 10 ban draft like normal and ranked. People who hate Yi as much as you can ban him. I hate his ass but I'd much rather ban Jax. Then if the other team picks an OP champ, I can pick one as well instead of ending up with 3 supports and 2 tanks. That way no one has to put up with the cancer champs they hate, and if they do, both teams can be evenly overpowered and cancerous.

ARURF is just a disaster of playing shit champs vs god champs, please save URF by bringing back drafts.

Almost every game I have played with/against a Master Yi has had a very high kill count and a very low death count. The only two times I remember winning against Yi was when I played Ekko and Vayne. Generally a Master Yi player will waste tons of time chasing kills - so it is still possible to win if you get a strong 1v1 splitpusher.

its urf again and yi is literally never targetable. I fight him, e uses q twice, is never targetable for long enough that even one autoattack will land and did 1,5K damage with q. I dont know why they dont adjust urf to make it atleast somewhat playable. right now you can just open at the start of the game if yi is in it. I literally cant play against this champion. most champs dont have anything that can be cast fast enough to land any damage on him between q's. Urf is not fun because of crap like this.
