How does MMR work?

To be honest, I dont understand how the MMR system works. In most of my games I carry my team and pretty much have the highest damage of all other players in game every game. However my MMR is still bad. I have a friend for instance whose KDA is 7:8:14 while mine is 11:8:11 with higher kill participation percentage, yet he still has higher MMR than me (OP.GG). We both duo and are in the same division, so i dont get how my MMR is bad if I carry most of my games with unskilled teammates? [zombie-brand-mindblown]

mmr has nothing to do with kda . it has to do with wins and losses ... if you have 800mmr and you lose to a team who has a lower mmr your mmr goes down... if you win on a consistent basis your mmr raises and places you vs people with higer mmr til you lose then it adjusts your mmr til you maintain about a 50 % win rate

Then that would mean that you're always placed against people with a lower MMR than you. You gain more MMR when the matchmaking system places you in unfair matchups. You lose less LP from these unfair matchups because the system expected you to lose, it rarely does this though, as it only does this to lower queue times. But if you do win these unfair matchups, you can suddenly gain 22LP even though you regularly gain 18LP or less. Same goes for if you lose against low MMR players you can lose up to 22LP because the system expected you to win.
