How do I play more aggressively?

Hi! I'm currently level 36 and I've been only playing support since I started, I think the main reason for that was it's a very passive role to play and I was always afraid of getting flamed by others for being bad at other roles. I main very low-damage/squishy champions like Soraka Sona andLulu and that's got me into a very bad habit of playing extremely passively when it comes to adc or mid. I want to be able to play ranked, but I can't play anything other than support and it sucks. If I practice other roles now i'll get flamed for feeding so I've been grinding it out on bot games which many people don't recommend. Anything helps, champion suggestions, ideas, mindsets, I'm just so done playing support. Thanks :)

edit Thank you so much for all the comments! I won't reply to all of them but I've read through them all and I'm definitely going to try and incorporate these factors into my games. :) <3

This season its kind of hard actually. I noticed more then ever people play super passive and hide out under tower if you apply any sort of damage. It is very weird.

Just spam your abilities , and basic attacks in a safe distance

First, don't pay attention to people complaining about you 'feeding' if it's normal games. Explain that you're still learning that champ or role, and get on with your life.

Second, as stupid as this sounds, playing passive can be a good thing. If the enemy isn't regularly trying to trade with you and winning, you're generally fine. If the enemy isn't bothering you, and you're doing a better job of getting CS than them, you're probably also fine.

Third, try playing Sona with an AP build instead of the low-ELO meta build for her (something like:item 3312item 3174 item 3504 item 3100 item 3285 item 3135), and going with slightly less support focused runes (Summon Aery, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Scorch, with Resolve secondary using Font of Life and Revitalize). Such a kit gives her some pretty scary damage on her Q (actually, at higher levels of play, she is just as much of a poke support as a healer), and will let you play somewhat more aggressively while still giving you decent support utility). If you can get the hang of playing her like that with a focus on making it a kill lane or keeping the enemy marksman away from farm, you'll probably find you have an easier time playing other champs and rolls more aggressively.

As far as ideas, here's some champs who might be worth trying without having to adapt too much:

  • Malzahar mid: He has a rather passive-aggressive play-style, mostly sitting back while his summoned voidlings and his E tear people and minions to pieces.
  • Ziggs mid or bot: Everything he has but his auto-attacks is AoE. This makes it very easy to poke people while getting CS. He also has a reasonably good escape with his Satchel Charge.
  • Sivir bot: Her kit in general is very well suited to playing more passively and still harassing the enemy simply by farming. She's also reasonably easy to learn once you get the hang of the spell-shield, and can be played more aggressively.
  • Zyra mid: Plants, you've probably dealt with them before, so I won't go too far into descriptions here.
  • Heimerdinger pretty much anywhere: Drop a few turrets, and sit back while they chew through your enemies.

Playing aggressive is harder, but you get more rewards for doing it well. I tanked my MMR from silver, to bronze 3, and then went from bronze 3 to diamond 3 afterwards. Make a shift, because what's the worst that can happen? Someone on the internet says some rude things? /fullmute all, /mute all is your friend.

Hi, I’m the most aggressive ADC player you’ll ever meet, who plays with the most aggressive support you’ll ever see.

I see playing aggressively as taking every trade you see. If you have a good amount of mana, use that ability, if you are in the Aa range, basic attack that kog maw, etc.

Good champs to pick up and climb are Katarina and Kayn. Both have high AoE damage, and can snowball to insta gib entire teams. (I once quite literally 1v 4’d a team as Full Lethality Rhaast (kayn Red form))

Katarina is a higher skill character if you’re up for the challenge, where as Kayn is easier to wrap your head around.

Stop playing support. This is probably what most support and jungle mains should do cause they don't understand how to actually lane properly. Play mid and top so you actually learn how to cs, trade, zone, deny cs, control the map, roam. You don't learn these things from playing support, you only learn how to press your heals/shields on your allies. Once you get better at these things you can go back to support and apply what you learned. Take Annie and learn these fundamentals. She simplifies everything to the fullest. Once you hit Plat or Dia you can expand your champ pool to Orianna and Taliyah.

This is literally the only advice that you should take if you want to get better at the game.

Flaming just comes with the territory and you'll have to get used to it. Start playing normals in other roles.

As for being aggressive, try just being more pokeful with your sup champs now. Especially with Sona, that's what she's known for. Work on getting your gold stacks from your support item by Qing the enemy within range, and it's always good if you have your passive on for extra damage/effect. The key is to watch your mana, and make sure you aren't poking too much and won't have any mana if you get ganked.

As for other roles, the easier champs to play I would suggest is Lux mid, she has skillshots but are pretty easy to hit once you get used to her. Poke with E, root with Q, shield with W and lazor ult with R. Sivir is a good pick for ADC, her Q is fun to use and it's just knowing when to hit E to block a spell. Jungle- sorry that's not my territory so I'm not sure which one is good for newer players to learn right now. Top? Probably someone like Garen. No skillshots, point and click spells. Silence with Q, raise your defenses with W, spin to win E, and delete people with R.

My friend got gold on Soraka, I'm not quite sure how. I'm not good on passive sups but here's what I do know for them:

Those 3 are aggressive-early, passive-later. You want to look for windows where you can out-trade your opponent because they're vulnerable for some reason (an ability is down, their support is too far away, they're lasthitting a CS) you also want to move in tandem with your adc if they want to poke. You can also bait some harass from the enemy team if you can heal it after or shield it. Lategame, realise your damage/risk ratios have changed and stay as a backline unless there's a vulnerable target or you're using Sona's ult to engage.

And for your situation I HIGHLY recommend Nami. She pretty much auto-outtrades any lane. Watch a couple of https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqjK004o44V3DmS39s_bsnw 's Nami videos- she's easy but you need to know her combo / builds. After Nami you can start to expand your champion pool to CC champs =)

Best way to learn to be more aggressive as a support... play Leona she will take you out of your safe space lol

Drugoth2/4/2018, 7:46:35 PM2 votes

Here's the thing, if you've trained yourself to be super passive you're going to have to untrain that instinct. In order to play aggressively you have to take risks and risk taking is very binary in terms of payoff.

You hear people say feast or famine a lot right? Well expect a lot of famine while you attempt to git gud.

These things take time and patience.

Renekton is the best champion to be aggressive because he has 2 movement dashes a heal and he gets hp bonus. In top lane I have countered red buff at 1:30 solo and gotten a double kill. Riven is better, but much more difficult, because you have to q the ground and hit automattacks. in general hold shift- to attack at max range if you play ranged, it helps keep you alive; while still doing damage. The secret to ADC is press shift. Miss fortune is the best adc in my opinion, but theposirioning for team fights are crucial to be able do use the ultimate, with armor pen it is the bestability in the game.

The best practice is ARAM to learn how to enter and leave a combat situation

The game is only fun when you play aggressively ; boring selfish play makes the game not interesting, KDA doesn’t matter if your team kills everyone that enters the fight.

I wish I would attach a screenshot, but these weird boards don't allow me to do it in a simple way so just go to my op.gg http://na.op.gg/summoner/userName=ScoundrelRuffian

83% win ratio in Silver with Brand support

If you are interested how to do it ,just ask

PS I corrected my statement, 83% win ratio is with Brand not overall

As someone suffering for trying to play aggressively this season

GO FUCKING IN NO EXCUSES

On Soraka, spam q :D. It pokes and heals u. Also, try blitzcrank (on normals-blind cuz banned a lot) cuz he does damage with ult and pull + knock up under turret. thresh better for more utility and better teamfighing too.
