I've played 15 Dynamic ranked games. I got my main role in only one of them.

TL;DR: The Dynamic Queue system is weighted too heavily to favor short queue times, and not heavily enough to guarantee that a player will get their primary role a majority of the time.

Background: I’ve played League casually for a few years at this point. I’ve played ranked here and there, ending up in silver the past two seasons. I can tell that if I invested the time and energy, I’d be able to improve my play and climb, but I just can’t play for a sustained period of time. I’ll get really into the game and play it a lot for a month or two, and then burn out and not play for a few months. A lot of this has been the result of player toxicity, and also the frustrations I would have when I had to play a role I wasn’t comfortable on. I favor mid, but after that I enjoy supporting now and then. When the new champion select system was announced, I was excited. Finally, I’d be able to play the two roles I felt I was decent on, and I’d be able to enjoy the game more regularly.

What happened: I waited for Dynamic Queue to be re-enabled and then queued up for my placement matches. Right away I started to notice a pattern. I’d pick my two best roles (mid primary, support secondary) and almost instantaneously have the queue pop. Lo and behold, I would be on support. After four of my first 5 games were played on my secondary role, I was starting to get concerned, but I figured I’d wait for the sample size to get larger. Another 5 games passed, and not a single one on my main role. I tweeted riot support about the issue, and they recommended I make a post on the boards. I gave it another 5 games. Again, didn’t get my primary role once, so I figured I’d follow the Twitter recommendation. This has started to become frustrating. I’m essentially being forced by the game to play a role that is not my favorite, simply because it is so high in demand. Curiously, I didn’t seem to encounter the issue as much when I’ve played normal draft, but I’ve also played much fewer normal games, and it was often with a friend who queued with two low-demand roles.

Feel free to check my match history for proof.

But why not choose a lower demand role for your secondary? I was kinda waiting to see a larger sample size, but honestly, I probably will. Right now, though, I am MUCH worse at playing any of the other low-demand roles. Top is probably my worst role. I’m not going to risk queuing for ranked with a secondary role that I know I suck at. It’s not fun for me and not fair for any potential teammates. I also just enjoy those roles less. Furthermore it will just perpetuate this issue for other people. The fewer people that queue with a high-demand role as their secondary, the worse things are going to become for those left that still do.

Recommendation: Riot needs to alter the dynamic queue system to either place even heavier weight on your primary role, or institute some sort of cap that limits how often you get assigned your secondary role. I would want this cap to be at between 33 – 40%

Now excuse me, I guess I have a few top laners I need to go practice... :(

i appreciate the way in which the spirit of scientific experimentation possessed you to boldly disregard your own well-being for the greater good

Originally I wanted to get a sample size of 50 games, but I quickly became too frustrated to wait that long.

Idk how ppl are having this issue, I get my primary probably 60%+ and if i get my secondary, thats fine, its better than playing my last 2 fav choices which i had to do quite often before dynamic queue.

Mid is the hardest role to get in the game. Main something else and put mid as your secondary choice. You'll have better results.

I think I've gotten my secondary role once, and that was because another member of my party had the exact same roles

Don't put support/fill as your secondary and you pretty much get your primary every time.

A big point in my post was that this shouldn't be the solution to this problem. I actually like playing support... but not every single game.

the game will try and put you in games faster, no matter what. sitting in queues for long periods of time cause players to not want to play anymore. to fix the problem the playerbase would have to have more people start playing support and jungle as their primary and not everyone on mid

I'd really like to not be support every single time I queue, Riot.

~A girl who mains mid, secondaries support in DQ.
