Katarina - Inherently Unhealthy?

I've been playing League since beta. I've been through all the ridiculously broken metas (looking at your Black Cleaver and Cinderhulk). I've been through release Xin Zhao and PBE TF. I've seen it all.

Katarina has always been the one champion in this game that really frustrates me from a player perspective - whether shes on my team or the other team. And its because she's either completely useless, or she's 1v5'ing. Or she was completely useless, got a couple lucky kills and then 1v5's.

However, since her "rework", it has gotten worse. The endless amount of shunpos while having zero CDR has created games where I literally have zero fun because its just ridiculous. Its like they transported a DOTA champion over. You can shit on her in lane and it makes no difference because she pumps out such insane damage and mobility with one or two items. She can be behind 100 CS and down kills, and still destroy you entire backline in a fraction of a second, and then escape because resets.

I've seen it all, and I can confidently say that Katarina - particularly our current version of Katarina is the most unhealthy champion in the game as far as game health goes.

I know her winrates aren't always stellar. I know she's feast or famine. I know she can be outplayed. BUT MY POINT IS THAT EVEN WITH ALL THOSE CONDITIONS, SHE'S STILL SUPER UNHEALTHY FOR THE GAME.

  • end rant.

One major factor that has helped her and a few other champs namely the skirmishers and yi is that riot have been removing point and click CC from the game for quite a while now.

Hyper mobile champs benefit from this most of all

Its one thing to remove a lot of the easy CC options, but the real issue is how many shunpos she can get in a fight with no CDR. Its ridiculous how much mobility she gets. Its nearly impossible to lock her down because of how easy it is for her to dodge stuff.

You're supposed to counterplay that by predicting where she might go, I think. She has a lot of in combat mobility, but doesn't really have a lot of options where to jump because of the reset mechanic. The cooldown is fairly long without the reset.

Now I'm not sure if this is a well implemented weakness, but it's a tip in how to deal with her.

She can jump to allies, minions, and enemies, including enemy traps/pets. She has plenty of options, even if she had her ward hop removed. She might not get a -dagger reset- off of it, but to say she doesn't have options is extremely wrong.

Well, she loses her ~~dashes ~~blinks once she does that. If she jumps and doesn't pick up the dagger, then she becomes immobile unless she can get a kill reset.

Tbh, no. If she were to say, throw a dagger at you, and then shunpo somewhere seemingly completely random, she can activate her W to gain an -extreme- movement speed boost and just run over to it for her reset and another positioning opportunity. Honestly, the amount of movespeed she gets from her W is mildly obscene, 90% at max rank. That's twice the amount Master Yi gets for ulting!

And yes I know that it's for a very brief period, but still, that's a lotta MS.

What's there to predict? If you walk over to where she's going to shunpo she'll just destroy you with tons of damage. The real problem is the low cooldown and plethora of targets to shunpo safely to. If they actually wanted to give her some predictability, they'd only allow her to shunpo to her daggers.

The new Katarina is bad. I was a pretty solid Kat Main through S4-S5, but I won't touch her now. She's far too toxic a champion. Katarina was never meant to be a manaless lanebully with a constant level of power and mobility - She was meant to have VERY distinct windows of power, and they removed that.

Same. I might as well have been maining an entirely different champ with how different she is.

I think it's time for riot to stop the mid-level updates. They aren't making champions any better.

To be fair, her weakness is still MR and health stacking, as well as her damage delay. Pre-rework her damage delay was only there in Bouncing Blade and Death Lotus. Now it's in her daggers (her biggest source of instant damage) as well as the previous mentioned. This causes her to fall off late game, but sadly, the delay doesn't prevent her from being very good in the early game.
