Question about your servers

Hi Riot, I am doing a project for school and just wanted to ask you some questions about the servers. I tried going to player support and they sent me here.

  1. How did Riot was able to create servers and not have people go into other games or disappear from their own games?
  2. What was the easiest part of creating servers and why?
  3. What was the hardest part of creating servers and why?
  4. How does Riot manage the servers?
  5. Why do some servers in the world get shut down for bugs, but others don't?
  6. How big is the server room and does Riot need to make more?
  7. Are there multiple ways of having servers or is there only one way to store a server?
  8. Why do bugsplats happen?
  9. Is it possible to have two major servers in NA and be able to have all people in NA play together? (Example: maybe you create a server in the west coast and have that server and the Chicago server merge together)
  10. What is necessary to keep the server running and avoid the server from crashing? Thank you for answering my question in advance!

Some of those questions are perhaps things that have answers that aren't specific to riot that you could potentially figure out through better understanding what servers really are.

That said, for you and anyone else who might be interesting in the technical side of how riot does stuff, https://engineering.riotgames.com/ exists and has all sorts of technical details for a variety of things, including server related stuff. I suspect some of what they have there might maybe bit a bit above your head for now, but if you're into that stuff it can take you on a journey of finding other stuff to look up until you get to a level you are comfortable with.
