Should more bans be added to ranked play?
So, I'm a little curious about banning recently, and how it may or may not be ready for a change
At this time, we have 126 champions to pick from in game, and each team gets 3 bans, making for the obvious total of six bans (roughly 4.7% of champions, if anyone cares). If you look at League when it came out back in 2009, there were 40 champions, with the same amount of bans... (15% of champions in the game at the time)
Aside from the obviously massive difference in percentage of champions you can ban, it seems to me that (outside of professional play, where people can research what teams play what champions) it's really hard to make bans that feel impactful, or like they make a difference. I mean, sure if you really hated bruiser/fighter junglers for some reason you could ban (just picking 3 random bruiser junglers here) Vi, Lee sin, and Xin zhao. But you're still leaving a large pool of champions that could fill that exact same role just as well, such as Udyr, Gragas, Rek'Sai or J4. I guess what I'm getting at here is, it seems like a total shot in the dark whether your bans have any real influence on the enemy team, you ban a few champions that your team doesn't like, or whoever is top tier at the time, and hope the enemy team plays one of those 3.
So, what could be done about it?

The quick and easy (but not necessarily best) option would be to hand out a few more bans to each team, maybe 5 or 6 per team. While this may only be a temporary fix, it may add a bit more feeling of power to the banning phase. Obviously this would run into the issue of requiring more and more bans as more and more champions are added.

Some of the bans could be put in different parts of the picking process. For example, letting each team pick one or two champions, then have the banning phase, then having both teams pick the rest of the champions. This would at least allow some narrowing down of where people are going. Once again using our bruiser/fighter jungler example, if the other team first picks Amumu and then you get to ban, you don't have to waste all your bans trying to get those junglers, you already are pretty sure that jungle has been picked, and you can use bans on something else rather than burning them to try and get rid of all those particular junglers. This might also add a little spice to the pick process because you could have the one or two champions that get picked before the ban phase, so if your team REEEAAALLLYYYY wants to play (still using our junglers here) Xin Zhao, you could use your initial pick to get that Xin Zhao before he gets banned.
I'm sure there are other ideas for how the process could be improved that other people have, but sitting here right now none seem to come to mind...But anyway! This is merely my request for the ban system to have a look taken at it, I'm not here to say that it has to be done one way or another, just throwing out a few ideas that might be helpful.
Hopefully I can get a conversation started among people who are more creative about this sort of thing than I am, and maybe something new and cool can be thought up and implemented.
Thanks for reading!
