Problem with Shvyana's Ultimate

I'm a big fan of Shyvana. She was one of the first champions I played, and I have always considered her one of my mains. She is really fun to play! Turning into a dragon feels so epic! However, something about it really bothers me: almost anything in the world can interrupt Shvyana mid-flight! This includes knockups, knockbacks, stuns, snares, which collectively many champions have. It's rare to play a game without at least one of those.

From a player's perspective it makes her ult really anticlimactic. It doesn't seem right that a mighty dragon in flight can be interrupted by basic things. It's frustrating, totally ruins everything in a fight, and doesn't even make sense!!! I get such a similar feeling when I play as Falco against Fox in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Every time Fox falls off the ledge, he has such a better chance of recovering because his recovery, which is otherwise the same as Falco's, goes a longer distance. If I end flying far off the ledge with fox, he just makes it back and I just drop, and all that's in my head is, "FALCO UR A BIRD WHY CAN'T U FLY?!" Furthermore, it looks really gross when it's interrupted. The model behaves unpredictably, the camera stops abruptly if you're holing the spacebar... Bottom line, Shyvana's ultimate is really not fun to use when it can be denied by so many things that don't seem reasonable.

Considering balance, this weakness in Shyvana's ult makes it really difficult for her to compete with other characters with similar roles. Shyvana's ult is primarily an engage. Other engages, such as Vi's ult, Malphite's ult, and Hecarim's ult, have CC immunity. I can't really see how making Shyvana's ult un-interruptible would make her overpowered. It only lasts a second, does mediocre damage, and has fairly weak CC. Most of the benefit of Shyvana's ult comes from the passive resistance buff and the subsequent usage of her modified abilities. Making the initial part un-interruptible would do little more than make her gameplay more intuitive. As it is, Shyvana is totally helpless against crowd control, being a melee champion with no other gap closers. Her ult, being her only gap closer, should really be her trump card to be used against CC at the right time, especially given that enemies can see when it's up. That's what I've imagined her gap closer to be for.

lol i cant really say if it would be neccessary to buff her like that but i sure was laughting about that falco and fox analogy. falco has faster execution on every single one of his abilities including his basic attacks aswell has higher stun recovery. as a tradeoff, he has slower fall speed and shorter range on his abilities. this difference was strenghtened even more in super smash bros brawl and then reduced a bit in melee since in brawl, falco was just plain better than fox by not only a bit, but many times, and even in melee, falco was definitely very dominant in a 1on1 vs fox.

oh, and btw, her ult is not an engage spell. her role is very different from a malphite or a vi.

I would have to disagree that Shyvana's ult is not an engage spell. While yes, it can be used as either an engage or an escape it is most definitely an engage. Using it as an engage allows her to push her enemies back a bit and so she can get a better grip on them. They basically get caught in her wingspan and are carried a short distance, if this isn't some sort of engage then I have no clue what is. I play Shyvana a lot, I have been playing her since I started League basically and I love her for everything she is. I have to agree with what NvrSkipLeagueDay is saying here because her ult need a little bit of invulnerability to really make it feel like shes become a dragon. How is it the a 135lb female ( Vi ) cant be stopped but an approximately 4 ton Dragon mid flight can be stopped by nearly anything? That doesn't make sense in any sort of way. It wouldn't break the game or ruin balance or anything, it would just make Shyvana a little more viable in team fights and quite possibly her ganks. I think this has proven my point, but you are free to argue against it.

you had no arguments to prove your point lol, so what exactly shoudlve proven your point? that league of legends doesnt follow real life logic? damn, you caught me off guard there. her ultimate is a displacement that drags her enemies along with her so you can use it in one of multiple ways. a few of them are:

  1. either seperate an enemy from his team to fight him alone and kill him

  2. push enemies into your team for an engage. THIS is the engage portion of the spell, not the "jump towards them gg"

  3. push enemies away from your team to stop their engage on your carries and counterengage at the same time

  4. feel like a cool dragon

The Fox Falco analogy wasn't a criticism of the balance. It was an argument for logical consistency. Birds should fly more :P Shyvana's ult is a lot like those other engage ults. It doesn't freeze an opponent, but it has some form of displacement for the enemy team. It also sets up AoE for the fight if W is activated beforehand. It seems best as an engage. It can also be an escape, peel, or chasing tool, though.
