To Rioters: Event passes etc.

Ciro··22 votes·13,128 views

As "Illegal meme" from EUW said a month ago:

As Snow Down event is coming soon, and Riot Mort has stated that Prestigious Akali will be available through Snow Tokens, I sincerely hope that there won't be an event pass barricade like you did on Worlds event.

I love KDA. Everyone love KDA. Players love it because they are high quality. Riot loves it because I believe it's likely the most profitable thing Riot has done this year. I'm totally fine with Riot try to maximize profit by rushing Prestigious Akali immediately after KDA success. But what I don't like is the Event Pass system implemented during World Event.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is unhappy with event pass. To be honest I was really burnt out by all the token grinding. I ddin't feel a huge achievement the moment I forged golden kaisa. It feels like I spent 1650 RP on a skin which I was also forced to grind games for a month to obtain. It just does not feel good.

Prestigious Akali is likely to be 2500 Snow Tokens. I beg whoever are in charge of this event that please develop a better mission system to obtain Prestigious Akali. No one wants a scammy button says "Claim your 2000 tokens" where in fact you have to spent cash to "claim" those tokens. No one wants to feel forced to play during holiday season.

Maybe some of you have better ideas on how to make Snow Down event enjoyable to ALL players, and Prestigious Akali's obtainability reasonable. Feel free to comment below and god bless some rioters see it.

Happy Thanksgiving.

We (again) feel like LoL is more enjoyable ONLY if you pay money for it. Riot, you had a problem with skins being obtainable only by purchasing RP, and you fixed it by giving us beautiful Loot system, and we are all happy about it, then a year or so later, you start making skins, which are only obtainable by purchasing event pass, which is only being purchased by RP...I mean, come on. Odyssey event was perfect, hardcore missions, but great rewards!

Please consider this, you are going to make same mistakes again, and more and more players are unhappy.

Love, Ciro. ^^

Game companies need to make money, so schemes like this will be even more common. It's annoying, but at least you still get the game for free. This will never change.

Stop comparing League of EA. They're not even the same animal.

EA requires you to purchase said game. Let's use the Sims 4 as an example. In the Sims 3 core game, the toddler life stage you progress your characters' babies into was a set function of the game, after being introduced in the Sims 2 core game. Basements, also, were a thing you could build, after their introduction in one of the expansion packs of the Sims 2. EA, for the Sims 4, opted to strip out both of these things which had been core for the past game, in lieu of "other fun content," and it wasn't until great outrage from the community that Maxis (owned by EA) added both of these functions in as a free update. It has long been suspected, like with many other EA titles, that they chose to gut core aspects of the game in order to sell them to you later as content pacts - and even said, they still shipped a content pack specifically for the new toddler life stage after they introduced it.

League of Legends doesn't do this. They do not require you to to buy a half completed game, or a game that has had core features removed from past installations, with plans to sell those features to you at a later date. The game is not without it's faults, but for you to make this shitty correlation that they are somehow EA games is just idiotic. You get the whole game for nothing. Anything else you want (which is PURELY COSMETIC with no gameplay influence) you have to buy, and Riot is providing things for people to buy.

I see so virtual ticket sales, live events, tournaments, skins and rp purchases simply can't keep this game afloat, Riot Games needs to create exploitative bundles and event tickets to keep the game up and running. they're barely scaping by as is with their, constant music commissions, professional studio animation on top of community animations commissions and mass live events. Truely the state of a game that is in dire need of money.

Entertainment companies have this really delusional view of your money: they want it all. I'm not saying that Riot, and by extension Tencent, are doing poorly, but gaming industry is full of greedy suits.

We should be glad we can still play League for free.

Also, first of all, there's a simple way to say 'no fuck this,' and it comes from a former EA employee. I shouldn't have to explain who or on what.

"If you don't like it, don't buy it."

on a more serious note, these sorts of things are borderline unessisary, but then again, Riot is becomming the Corpus EA to a certain extent, as these passes have the chance to grant RNG Loot which is thankfully missing for the most part this time, and wasn't the main attraction THANK FUCKING GOD THEY AREN'T FULL DARK SIDE YET. However, not all F2Ps do this sort of shit, nor do all AAA titles do this shit either.

For example, on the AAA title side of things although I don't personally care for the game, God of War doesn't have a single. Fucking. MTI in the sonofabitch. And guess what? IT SOLD LIKE FUCKING HOTCAKES and also made Kratos into a less MURDER FUCKING EVERYTHING character, which was probably for the better. And then there's also the Spider-Man PS4 exclusive that REALLY FUCKING SOLD LIKE HOTCAKES and has, from what I've heard (am not a console peasant), an internal MTI system except it's closer to Halo: Reach style customization. Meaning you grind for outfits.

Ironic I say this, because I know of one F2P that's thriving well in another AAA game's utter failure that has a similar grind except is ten billion times worse because FUCKING WHY AM I DOWN BY ONE GODDAMN MOTHERFUCKING PLASTID!!! DE PLOX!!!, and that game is Warframe. The thing with Warframe is that, quite literally, you pay if you want something that looks cool as FUCK (btw, well worth the money, especially TennoGen stuff since most of the money goes to the original creators, who are fellow Warframe players!), and that's just about all you can pay for other than to bypass the grind for a weapon by straight up buying it, a weapon slot and a Catalyst to be thrown in for giggles and shits which also is a bypass to gameplay content. However, the way the game catches you, is you have to wait on crafting times.

Me? I can be patient. But I know damn well that someone who has a fury complex attached to crafting timers also me will furiously click at the BOOST NOW button whenever possible. If... at least, the timer isn't sub-one hour. Because HOLY SWEET NEKROS TAKES ABOUT 6 DAYS TO MAKE NOT INCLUDING THE FUCKING GRIND TIME KILLING LEPHANTIS AND GETTING ANY OTHER RANDOM CRAP YOU NEED FOR IT.

But yeah, it's otherwise extremely fair F2P loot shooter, but can cause minor migraines at times with some of it's maths like how if you want to kill any Grineer units above Lvl 120 you need at least 3 fucking Corrosive procs to do it because HOLY SHIT THAT ARMOR EXPONENTIALLY INCREASES EFFECTIVE HP If you like Destiny, check it out - it's DLC is also free. In fact, 99.99% of the content is free, outside of Platinum - which is the actual currency obtained through either, get this, trading with players or buying it with real money. You can get the premium currency by trading.

Oh, i'm not saying we should eat bullshit like a herd of sheep. On the contrary, whenever some corporate fuck tries to mess with my games i will speak out. I'm not buying BF5, Anthem or another Assassin's Creed game. But, we cannot win against some shithead suits on top, because people will buy next FIFA, next COD, and greedy assholes will get their money regardless.

But Warframe is awesome, true.

Yeah but I prefer when my game companies make money in a way that's not scummy and makes people quit the game. You know... so they can continue to exist and I can continue to like their game.

Companies make more money long term if they don't piss everyone off and lose all their goodwill with customers. Riot had a lot of goodwill stored up over the years, but unfortunately two shit seasons in a row plus recent bullshit with passes, ruby chromas, stupidly expensive add ons to skins like loading screen borders, etc., is quickly using all that goodwill up.

A pass for a bit of money and skins you need to play quite a bit to get aren't an issue.

When the RP cost is not directly linkable to a single purchase and the special skin requires more than 10 games a week?

Ridiculous.

Juice1 votes

That's why it's special, or you can play 5 games a week and get the winter packages instead to make up for the tokens you need.

Hèntaî 2 votes

But thats even more money you will have to spend just for the skin

you had a problem with skins being obtainable only by purchasing RP, and you fixed it by giving us beautiful Loot system

You mean the loot box system which is designed to abuse people with a gambling addiction? I personally don´t have a problem with the hextech system since it´s free stuff for me but calling it beautiful and praising riot for it is a bit too much.

They even changed the whole system of earning ingame currency to abuse it. It´s not even optional anymore but mandatory to use the hextech system unless you don´t want any champs or perhaps you have a million years of time to grind through the system (since we at least get 50 blue essences from the daily mission after players complained).

Tomoe Gozen1 votes

You do realize that leveling up your account by playing the game ANYWAY earns you champion capsules that you can bank for BE? On top of the 50 BE we get on FWotD mission?

No, it does not take you ages to unlock anything, Riot specifically released MATH detailing BE earnings per games played and how this system does net us same or more BE, unless you're that player who goes out of your day to play more than 8 games a day. So for ALMOST the majority of players, it's a BE gain instead of a loss you want to claim it is.

I'm sorry, the numbers are very clear in that regard.

You do realize that leveling up your account by playing the game ANYWAY earns you champion capsules that you can bank for BE? On top of the 50 BE we get on FWotD mission?

Yes, I do realize it. BUT DO YOU REALIZE THAT YOU GOT IP/BLUE ESSENCES FOR PLAYING GAMES BEFORE THEY CHANGED THE WHOLE SYSTEM? Like that´s my whole point THEY CHANGED THE SYSTEM SO PLAYERS NEED TO OPEN CAPSULES so players have to use the system more frequently (than before) and get used to it, so it´s more likely they will buy a chest, cause the threshold (don´t know if it´s the right word) is now lower if they constantly use the system to open loot boxes (which champion capsules are).

No, it does not take you ages to unlock anything,

Perhaps you misunderstood me again but I meant that it takes ages to get every champ if you DON`T WANT TO USE THE LOOT SYSTEM SINCE YOU ONLY GET 50 BLUE ESSENCES PER DAY.

I'm sorry, the numbers are very clear in that regard.

I´m sorry but perhaps you could need some training in reading comprehension or getting information out of context. Or perhaps my phrasing was poor, but I still think the sentence was understandable.

But don´t switch the topic and talk about the time investment of getting BE or champs since it never was my point.

Thanks :)

Tomoe Gozen1 votes

if you DON`T WANT TO USE THE LOOT SYSTEM SINCE YOU ONLY GET 50 BLUE ESSENCES PER DAY.

The champion shards you get from Capsules go to your Loot. You [REMOVED BY MODERATION - ULANOPO] relying on 50 BE a day per First Win of the Day is entirely a problem of your making. Riot didn't make it any more harder or more convoluted to get your BE, it was just transitioned to the Loot tab in the client, which is one click away from you.

Using a champion shard to purchase that champion in question lets you buy that champ at a 40% discount so it's even less frustrating saving up 6300 BE for, lets say Ezreal, when his price with the shard included is 3780 BE. And if you don't get his shard, i think it was around 950+ BE worth per capsule.

Opening champ capsules doesn't cost you anything, Riot only wanted to tie the Hextech Crafting to getting more rewards and not make it Hextech Chests exclusive. That's also where your Honor Capsules and Orbs go. That's also where your mission rewards go (if they're giving away something to obtain that's not currency).

If you're refusing to use a system that gives you a lot of free things for any reason, you have no right to complain how your life is harder by being that lazy and claiming that one more click is too much of a hassle for you - i'm assuming that's the problem but feel free to correct me if i'm wrong on that one.

dome0251 votes

My last response since you´re most likely just here to waste my time by derailing the argument.

It´s not about if we get more or less from the hextech system. It´s about the addictive effect it can have. Loot boxes are just another form of gambling (you could compare it to a lottery where you can get different rewards which normally have different values).

Previously it was just optional for free stuff but since the changes the loot system/ gambling system is mandatory to be used to progress in this game. It´s hard to unlock core aspects of the game (champions) if you don´t use it.

And there was no need to tie the IP/BE system to it. If they wanted to give us an easier time to unlock champs they could have increased IP/BE earnings. But instead they added champion capsules which is basically another way of gambling when there´s no need for it. And this system forces players to use the gambling system which was previously optional.

So they changed the system of earning IP to a gamble system which can be harmful to certain people. There´s a reason lottery is for 18+ year olds and a warning that lottery is addictive.

Now just a few last information. I already have all champs probably even before they changed it to a gambling system. And I use hextech regularly since I know there is no risk of me getting addicted to it nor am I to lazy to use it as you claim. I just recently (hell at the time they implemented it, season 5/6 I was worried Riot could go bankrupt cause nobody would pay for skins etc. and thus me not being able to play LoL anymore ) dislike such gamble systems and don´t really want them in my games. Cause they are a way of abusing how some people are (some tend to get easier addicted than others + kids play this game who are again easier to influence).

So this was my last reply to you since I believe you are just trolling me and wasting my time on purpose by constantly derailing my original argument (changing topic from it being a danger for people who get easy addicted/ being a gamble system to how much someone can earn BE with it).

Tomoe Gozen1 votes

It´s not about if we get more or less from the hextech system. It´s about the addictive effect it can have.

EDIT:

I've decided to scrap my entire comment since you've made quite a funny allegation that Champion Capsules are the SAME as Hextech Chests... Now i'm going to thoroughly explain what that's not the case.

You've merely decided to consider them as same things because they are grouped under the same Tab. They are FUNDAMENTALLY different and i'm shocked that you don't understand this difference already:

##Same elements:

  • Both can be found under the Loot tab in the client
  • Both feature randomized loot

##FUNDAMENTALLY different things (Champion Capsules):

  • DO NOT require a key to open (no real money aka RP purchases)
  • Can STRICTLY be OBTAINED through leveling, which is a natural process of playing games and earning EXP towards leveling up your account (no RP purchases)
  • BE earnings are around 810 (The worst drop), 900, 960, or 1,240 Blue Essence per level up (Capsule). (link i got this from)

Champion shards you do want can be used up for a 40% off on BE price (was not available under the old system) and no champion BE prices have been increased. This means that at worst, you're having to buy champions for a full BE price with more BE on average OR you can get lucky and save yourself 40% of BE from buying from a specific shard.

The system remained the same in the worst case scenario (with more BE on average) while if you get lucky, you save yourself some BE. The system is purely for the benefit of the user, not Riot. It's not holding your actual gameplay content (champions) hostage in any circumstance.

##B-but what about the GAMBLING aspect of the Capsules?

What of it? Merely having something chance-based is the definition of a "GAMBLE" but the word GAMBLE and GAMBLING are two different things entirely. You calling heads or tails on a flip of a coin is also a gamble but if there's literally nothing of value going on with either your heads or tails choice, there's no intrinsic value to such a GAMBLE. You're simply calling heads or tails and gambling nothing on the result. You have nothing to win and nothing to lose.

Capsules are exactly that. You lose nothing, in fact you gain more in-game currency on average, with a chance to get a discount via randomized champion shards. If you don't get lucky a single time during your lifetime, you're literally buying every champion for their original price, even before this "gambling" system existed - with no real money invested on your part.

Riot has never put a cap on how much games a day you can play nor did they EVER limit the rate of BE (or IP) you can earn after a certain point. This was always under your control and your time invested in playing League on a daily, monthly or a yearly basis.

it took you so long to write this and nobody has noticed....damn im sorry...

You are right on everything you say (at least in my opinion)

You know...soon there will be a season pass and if you buy it you will get special skins and emotes. And hmm oh wait, we already have a battle royale mode nvm.

Tomoe Gozen2 votes

How is the event pass even a problem for anyone? The ONLY thing you get out of them is extra tokens for the specific event and DAILY missions giving you more tokens to get you closer to the Prestige skin. Mind you that this skin line is special for the events they're featured in so not obtainable through a direct purchase of RP.

The pass itself is only 1450 RP on a discount throughout the event anyway, which is only 100 RP more expensive than a 1350 RP skin. That's for 150 tokens boost immediately, one event Capsule and one event Icon. And that's on top of the Prestige skin + a lot of leftover tokens for more crafting offered through the event shop like key frags, chests, special event emotes, etc. So that's a lot more content you get for the easily obtainable event currency that you have a lot of time to collect and spend casually.

Even without the pass, there's enough tokens for at least 2 chests (150 tokens each) and a key frag or two for the leftover tokens, which is pretty good in my opinion so it's not like Riot's forcing you into the Pass purchase and penalizing players who won't buy it. It's obvious that you can't get enough tokens on your own to buy the Prestige skin because it's an event skin, as i've previously stated.

The event Pass isn't reducing the amount of content us "F2P" players can obtain normally:

  • it gives more tokens + extra goodies when you buy it
  • more token quests daily
  • token stash you get from playing games
  • a Prestige skin
Moonscourge2 votes

One of their latest Q and A's I believe stated that passes were among the "favorites" of people in the shop, which just means they will come every event and will always be 100% required since it's their new cash cow. Really sad. I bought it, if you play every single day and do the other achievements it offers good value.. but it's not worth selling my soul for.

6KEMBE4ORBA1 votes

Greedy riot cause of that. Also ret arded riot cause of their unwilligness (connected with profit) + inability to balance the game properly and running it into the ground gameplay-wise.

Quite obvious by now and I stopped giving them any money a long time ago and regret buying & gifting so much skins over the years.

If I could, I would chargeback everything and let them ban this account even as it has the most rare (event) skins in the game.

Matthias231 votes

It would have been nice to have tokens come with each of the bundles and not just the loot bundles. Or giving out snowdown tokens alongside the Blitz tokens in the Blitz quests would have helped. The event pass, I think, needs to give a bit more access to content. I get the need to grind for the stuff you want but I think there are avenues they could have explored to help with that, especially if you spent more rp during the event than just getting the pass.

Axzarious1 votes

Just gonna echo the sentiment. While the Kai'sa skin was cool, grinding out the games was a huge pain in the ass, and I barely managed to get the skin playing every spare moment I could. Please please PLEASE find another way. It's going to take one HELL of a deal or something awesome to make me even remotely consider grabbing another season pass again.

Modl Ryden l1 votes

If this is going to be a monthly basis they might as well start offering monthly subscriptions which is basically what they're asking for.

Every month "You want more missions to get cool loot?" Well even though you BUY our pass you STILL have to grind 5+ hours a day to get all the loot. Loot that definitely isn't worth 'working 5 hrs a day' to obtain.

It doesn't make the game appealing at all to play. It just lists a plan of things I HAVE to do to get the rewards. And I don't wanna grind. I want to make plays. I don't wanna waste time having to 'play' X champ for just for the sake of getting 2 tokens when I could have been playing a game with a champ I genuinely enjoy.

It's HotS all over again. Like doing the missions was fun for like 2 weeks then it became a grind and it came to a point where I just wanted to play 1 hero for a week or two BUT I'd trade it off by missing out of my rewards for that day. Like I don't wanna fkin play Urgot or Veigar. Or I don't want to play Amumu or Shaco. I want to champs I'm interested in.
