I think it has to do with MMR, don't quote me on it though.
your mmr has to be that of a silver 5's. So just look yourself up on lolnexus every game and if you start to get paired with silver 3's and silver 4's than you know you are about to demote.
Then you probably won't drop until your MMR drops some. So if you lose another game or two, nothing will probably happen (other than MMR drop), but if you lose a dozen or so your mmr will eventually drop and you'll get demoted. If you're seeing S1s-S2s you probably have a 10-15 losses buffer before you drop out of gold.
There's an algorithm based on your MMR, but it's behind the scenes and I doubt anyone has experimented enough to crack it. I think that they have a larger buffer in place for division drops than simple league drops.
Edit addition: One thing you could do is go to op.gg or a similar site that can calculate your MMR, and it will tell you where you stand relative to others with your rating. So, for example, if you look and your MMR is 1600 even though you've lost 6 games in gold 5, you've still got a pretty big buffer before you drop (I'm high LP silver 1, and my 1450 MMR says higher than average). If it gets to be 1400 or less, you'll probably get demoted in a loss or two. The game basically still uses the old Elo system, but tries to match it to the new league system. Whenever your MMR gets too high or too low, your LP changes reflect that as the game tries to push you into the tier it thinks you belong in.
