Gives assassins an offensive item that gives them a spell shield, preventing counterplay. Lol

The spell shield is counterplay against the mages that can blow them up in a rotation.

As for Mages counterplay is summed up by staying with the team and not wandering off into the jungle alone when you know the enemy has an assassin.

pretty much this. playing as an assassin you would either one shot someone or instantly get CCed and die.

"We like counterplay" said riot. Proceeded to make it so a ranged champion can crit for 450+% bonus damage and one shot most squishies while having invisibility with no counterplay.

See i can play that game too.

Having played with the item some, I think its pretty nice. It is pretty obvious when it is being used and gives assassins a tool just like zhonyas. I think it balances things out nicely.

Where's the ADC counterplay?

Its not like ADCs/mages don't do just as much damage. At least you can dodge most mages, though.

If you say "CC them, blow them up, zone them", the same could be said about assassins and mages. Assassins aren't immune to CC.

There's also this handy little trick where you throw out another ability before your CC to break spellshields, not that Edge of Night is a problem on anyone. Its a pretty weak item overall unless you're a hard engage AD with low mobility, like Nocturne. Even then, most Nocturnes do not build it because there are better options.
