How to play Gnar for dummies
(Sidenote: I'd like to point out I've only played Gnar twice, once in a custom with bots and once in PvP)
Gnar is a TANK focused bruiser, not a DAMAGE focused bruiser. His damage comes from W procs in mini gnar form, applied with Q's and autos, and mega gnar form does damage by sticking to targets and smacking them around.
Doran's shield
is a good pickup for gnar, as with doran's blade
, your Q doesn't proc lifesteal, and if you're constantly autoing, that only makes your trans to mega gnar form faster, whereas you farmed/poked mainly with your Q, avoiding enemy poke, you'd only get rage generation from being in combat, not from autos (from what I understand, autos generate rage, while being in combat only generates passive rage, as Gnar's Q only puts him in combat, and is NOT given the bonus rage autos get). Also, Mega Gnar's skills are AoE.
is better for people autoing all the time, such as ADCs or people like Yi or Tryndamere.
As Mini Gnar, you want to Q to pick up cs that's too far for you to pick up safely, while hitting the enemy champ with your boomerang if possible, and getting W procs off on them whenever you can do it without getting too much return poke. Save your E for escape, unless you KNOW nobody else is near you. Then jump in all you want.
As Mega Gnar, you want to be jumping onto people, W'ing them, and then smacking them in the face with boulders repeatedly (you pretty much lower the cooldown instantly if you boulder toss in their face, you're going to be right on top of the boulder, you're going to pick it up pretty much instantly).
Now for some build paths; Gnar's core item is Phage.
"Why's this?" some might ask. Well, Gnar scales off of AD and hp, and
offers both, even giving him some extra movespeed every time he autos, which adds onto hyper's movespeed bonus, making it great to help him kite/chase. I checked to see if there was any item (
doesn't count because phage is in it) with health and ad that would be good for Gnar, and the only ones I found actually beneficial were Black Cleaver
(AoE damage as Mega Gnar applies Black Cleaver passive, as well as Mini Gnar's Q.), and Frozen Mallet
(More kiting + chasing).
Now, you can't get away with just building straight tank on Gnar, as, even though your W does a lot of good damage, you're going to need some more utility damage to do things.
Some items I'd recommend would be Youmuu's
, for the armor pen and movement speed/attack speed steroid active, and items such as Mercurial Scimitar
or Maw
, as they offer damage and resistances, with useful item effects, perfect for Gnar (when ahead, rushing a bf sword when you're 0/3 is kind of stupid, if you need mr and ad, you'd be better of getting a cowl
and then picking up a brutalizer later).
Some might ask "Why no bork?"
Well, bork IS a good item on Gnar, but, he can't make full use of it most of the time. as it's passive is applied through autos. "I don't see the problem, it even synergizes with his w passive, like Vayne." Well, the thing about that is, that's only when he's in mini Gnar form, and in Mega Gnar form, you usually want to be using your skills over just autoing things.
I've also seen people grab hydra
on Gnar. While that is good in mega gnar form, you can't fully benefit from it in mini gnar form, so hydra is a nogo either.
Usually a good build as Gnar would be two or three tanky items, such as Randuin's omen
, so you can kite as mini-gnar or stick to people as mega-gnar more easily, banshee's veil
, for the mr, bubble, and hp regen passive, and maybe
or
, for damage + hp, and some utility. Then, a couple of damage items, such as
,
,
,
, or maybe even
, if you feel like it (Gnar can drop his W marks on multiple targets, unlike vayne, but I still wouldn't recommend buying
. unless you're superfed). Take tanky boots, such as
or
.
That's all I can think of for Gnar for now, put in some feedback on how you guys think Gnar can/should be played, as I've only played him for realsies once.
