The "Roles" of League: BREAK THE META

Hello everyone! I'm making this because of a little gripe I have been having recently as a support role. Firstly, let me just tell you my role. I run Velkoz Support. I got 7+ mastery and 120.5k on him as of this moment. I play him. A LOT. and I am VERY good at him, even before his ridiculous back-to-back patch buffs(no complaints here :D). Need Proof? Here are my past few games, some were a little bad but: http://grabilla.com/0670a-410e7dc6-dff7-446e-b6af-70495c9314cc.png (and no, these were not just kill steals, matter of fact, most were either soloed or my ult getting them running away. or me bursting them down before my adc can breathe). ANYWAYS, people seem very single-minded when it comes to the "support" role, and I'd really like to take the definition of Support from the dictionary: bear all or part of the weight of. Now, as we can see from my scores, I did very much bear part of the weight of my team, and in many cases ALL of it.

But here is where my complaint comes in, and it starts in the most dreaded place of all: Pre-game Lobby. Around every 5th game, someone will notice I'm running Velkoz Supp, and comment on it. Normally, it's just a "Velkoz works as a supp?", so I let it slide. But then we have the people who notice Velkoz Supp and complain because "I have never seen a good Velkoz Supp" or "Velkoz isn't a support character". Most of the time they dodge and continue on their one-sided track. However, some are brave enough to play after their big fit, and then the FUN begins.

Ohhhh boy, if the first complaint isn't "More kills than the adc/adc has more assists" then it's "You aren't even building support items". Now HOLD UP. Notice how the first thing on my games is item 3092 ? I kid you not, they see this and say "Not even a support item". I START with this. Come on people, get real. It's a mage damage support item, intended for the support to poke and get tribute gold. [zombie-brand-mindblown] Now, game progress, blah blah blah, and BAM, hit with "Let the ADC get kills, you KSer". Now this only happens on occasion, and RARELY from the ADC, as the adc usually understands that he isn't keeping up and I'm dealing all the damage (and to be fair, if you deal all the damage shouldn't YOU be allowed to finish your kill, regardless of role?). And here lies my problem. Support has been shoved into this hole of "Your KD doesn't matter to the team, you are supposed to get assists and let the ADC carry us".

And here is my problem with that:

  1. The ADC doesn't do his job, even when I set everything up, the kill escapes. No kill, no gold. No Gold, no lead. No lead, no easy win.
  2. The ADC keeps up. In fact, he excels. He gets almost every kill, really racking up that gold and item build. But wait, he dies. CRAP, now we can't deal nearly HALF as much damage as he can as a group of 4. Other team takes lead, they win.
  3. (and my personal favorite) It's a bad match, the ADC falls behind and feeds a few kills. You are left defending alone. What would a normal support do? Well, almost nothing every time. Because they CANT do anything. they don't deal near as much damage to take on 2v1, let alone have AoE to hit both.

And thus we dive to the root of the cause. The community. We have ingrained in each other where certain champs belong and where they don't. Now don't get me wrong, some champs have a spot they DO NOT belong, because of their mechanics(But this doesn't stop people from being GOOD at that champ in that weird role). So when someone does something that isn't meta (I guess it is meta now? But I've played Velkoz Supp since right after TahmKench release, and haven't seen any Velkoz Supp myself so no meta as I can see.) and does good, people get angry. Like, REALLY angry. Mainly the other team with "No skill Velkoz , it's the champ that's good not you" or "broken"(maybe a little :D) but this doesn't give reason to harass me for picking something that I'm good at in a role the champ succeeds in. I don't see a team with Blitzcrank on it complaining about him grabbing and taking burst kills. "Oh cause it was a skill shot, you shoulda dodged", and so my skill shots aren't a valid reason to claim my kill? Something is very wrong in the way this community thinks. Instead of helping and working with new builds and roles, we mock and hate on something that isn't decided as "normal". So I encourage you, if you see someone pick something "out of their role", let it happen. And if it doesn't work, don't hate on them, it was probably a bad game. In fact, I encourage you to try a different champ in a role, break these stupid "metas" and make the game interesting again. Thank you for actually reading this all [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Afterward: Don't get me wrong, I have had games where the ADC knows the power of Velkoz and uses that to keep up with me. Really simple really, Velkoz bursts them down (killing them in most cases), so the adc should come in from behind to confuse enemies and pick up the runners I miss. This works GREAT. And most of the time, the ADC ends up ahead of me regardless. I love you all who accept Velkoz or any champ for that matter in any role.

TL;DR: People are potatoes, and very one-sided. There is no role that a champ "belongs in", so stop hating. Try something new, break the "meta" and make the game interesting again.

TL;DR the TL;DR: Go up and read it you lazy potato.

EDIT: ALSOOO, you peeps and your summoner 14 /summoner 3 support mind: Bruh, a back-line support like Velkoz DOESN'T need those, as he will rarely ever use them. (And me being me, I forget about it half the time or they are out of range XD). Personally I pick up summoner 7 . Co-ordinate they use theirs first unless they are disabled and can't. That way, we can rotate summoner 7 . Saved my duo bots so many times having two summoner 7 .

We need tank or i afk. Seriously, this was said to me, twice, in short span of an hour. I agree with this post and I also agree that people are fucking potatoes.

Shit like this is why I love to play Syndra support. Thanks for the post dude. I'm glad I'm not the only one who breaks the meta like this.

On the one hand... I enjoy playing murder-supports like Vel'Koz, Brand and Annie and I will gleefully get fed and carry the game with them if I can.

On the OTHER hand, in EVERY one of the games you played, you built a Medjai's and no sightstone. Now... um... I support the murder-support lifestyle choice but they're right. You DIDN'T play a support. You played an AP carry bot. There is a difference.

That said, this is NOT a bad thing. The roles can and should be shaken up! Some games maybe a hideous pile of damage will win the day over a janna tornado. If you play a lot of Vel... play a lot of Vel support... and know when to play Vel support and when the team probably needs a more traditional support... more power to you. I'd be thrilled to have you on the team and screw anyone who says otherwise.

HOWEVER if you ALWAYS play Vel support and always build as a damage-dealer no matter what your team needs... that might be a problem. Vel is a fun pick but there ARE times when the team could REALLY use someone who can do things he can't... or if their team is one built around a brutally hard all-in combo or something Vel is pretty vulnerable to that and maybe Janna WOULD be the better pick to cockblock the enemy's engage.

I'm with you OP, because I'm down for people being less prickish over "off-meta" picks. I'd even be fine with it in ranked. Just realize when you're doing it that people expect you to do some things when you queue as a support. Think of people's salt over your pick being the tax you have to pay to break those expectations. And maybe consider getting a sightstone once in a while... wards win games.

hate to break it to you dude, but vel'koz support is not some new thing. he's been seeing support play since like 2 months after his release. hell i take him bot to turn it into a kill lane. my adc wants to bitch that im taking kills? well we'll see at the end of the game who's got more damage dealt. if it's me, quit your bitching. most of the time it is me. and when it's not, i'm usually not getting the kills anyway.

anywayBard top melee is my off-meta pick that i do. if i see a top that doesn't have like insane long range gap-closers get picked, i usually pick bard on them. at level 1 i hit them with 2 aa's and a meep, and 1/3 of their hp is gone with AD and cdr runes. then every time they try to farm, i just poke them while also last hitting. usually get them too scared to farm for the first 5 mins. by then im super tanky and just freeze lane all day and set up ganks for my jungler.

bard top is fun/sneaky op based on matchups

You bring shame to the support name by not getting a item 2049
