Someone explain the whole "ranked in preseason" business to me?

So this is my first season playing league. I was placed in Bronze 4 and got to s3. My friend said that we can play ranked in the preseason. Does this affect what rank I'll be placed in? Kinda confused. Thanks in advance.

Ranked is disabled during preseason

no its not. Ranked Decay is disabled in preseason. I believe if your rank rises in the preseason it gets factored in to your next season placements.

So will I keep my S3 and try to rank up normally, or is my ranked set and my MMR just changes?

You can still rank up normally, unless they change it for some reason.

So if I rank up normally, If I make it to gold before the preseason ends, will this affect my placements somehow?

Flex Queue is being counted as a new queue (Despite essentially being what we've had this year), so you need to do separate "placements" for it in the preseason, then again in the normal season. Solo/Duo Queue should be coming in a week or two, which will let you continue where you left off.

Sure fam.

Whatever rank you received at the end of the regular season will be your rank for season 6.

During preseason, you can continue to practice ranked at the MMR you were at at the end of the season. Preseason games will increase your MMR, just not as drastically as regular season games.

When season 7 starts, Riot will soft reset MMR, which basically means that everyone will be pushed towards Silver4, as it is the center of skill bell curve, or 'average'. After the soft reset, you can play your placement games. Placement games start you at your soft-reset MMR and rapidly adjust as it quickly attempts to find a good starting point for you for the new season.
