Rammus after Thornmail changes in 7.14

Hi folks,

First off: this is not a thread made to whine, I'd much rather hear some constructive feedback.

in the recent weeks I had a lot of fun playing Rammus. After the recent changes to Thornmail, I am a bit... miffed (it's a big buff for the item if you play any tanky champ other than Rammus, but a huge nerf if you do play the turtle) and can't really think about a good way to compensate the drastically decreased damage I now deal. And no, the 30% less slow on active W is not nearly a compensation.

Right now, I am going for an early bramble vest but not continuing building Thornmail until much later, as the additional effects are either meh or downright harmful: the damage increase is not a lot, the HP rather meh, the price is way higher now and the atk speed reduction would actually be sabotaging myself.

Instead I am thinking either Dead Man's Plate, Abyssal or maybe an early Iceborn Gauntlet. Dead Man's would give HP, armor (thus dmg, too), movement speed and a 1-time dmg burst. Abyssal would increase damage a little bit for myself and any AP teammate, give a bit of CDR, MR and HP. And Iceborn would give armor (and damage), 20% CRD and a small damage buff and area slow with Spellblade. I'm gravitating towards the Deadman's or Abyssal, depending on enemy team comp / threat level.

Any other recommendations / ideas?

Thx for any input!

well I'm not sure about it now, but before I could build item 3075 item 3068 item 3146 and the enemy super minions would heal me when they auto attacked me. but I'm liking the mini thornmail so now I'm trying the mini thornmail item 3751 item 3146

so short story I would like the thornmail changes to be reverted, but keep the mini thornmail build path :)

Impossible. A Rammus that had fun playing with the new mechanics?????? Rylai's or Liandries or both because they apply on W damage.

Another +1 on Liandries Torment, that item is great on Rammus, especially with Cinderhulk/Sunfire.

Both of them don't trigger Liandrys, only skills do. Same for Rylais, btw. Not saying that Liandrys is not viable, just that the "Immolate" item effect does not proc the effect of those two items.

Yeah I guess that Liandrys is now going to replace thornmail in my build. Still not the same, as the threat of "health %dmg " is more useful vs tanks and bruisers, not AD carry champs like Yi, Trynda, Yasuo or any ADC, but I guess it's still better than the new thornmail. Not much more expensive than it, too.

The damage is better vs tanks, but the flat magic pen is incredibly powerful vs squishies, and will meaningfully increase the damage of thornmail, sunfire, grasp if the undying if you take it, and all your abilities.

The Magic Pen works with Sunfire, It's a great combo. :) Also why it was amazing with old Thornmail.

Also, Liandry passive will proc on w, with enhanced damage during Taunt/Ult, but I guess you already knew that, but I just want to clarify for other readers.

Liandrys has always been a must have item for rammus to keep him doing damage late game. Its a shame that thornmails gone.. Bramble vest is a good items on its own!

I've been building item 3091 on rammus recently I'm still kinda sad about the decreased damage on the item 3075 but the grievous wounds is very helpful against life stealing adc's. I feel like with wits ends and the attack speed on his E you can still one shot a carry in a team fight late game. Also a good thing about the new thornmail is that his early clear is now amazing. Rush item 3076 and item 3751 and you can out farm other junglers really hard.
