It hasn't really changed. I play Aram almost exclusively. I still have fun playing champions I'm not very proficient. For example, I was a terrible Akali player, but recently I started to learn to play her and gotten a lot better with her. Ryze is another champion I never played, but he is pretty good at killing squishes once you understand his kit and abilities. When I get noobs, I just see it as a more challenging match. I try not to get mad at new players who don't buy the right items. For example, if you getting dive a lot and dying a lot, then it's a good idea to get some defensive items. It has helped me win some losing matches in the past. However, new players will not have sufficient knowledge to built defense items not listed on the recommend equipment slots.
Perhaps bring bans back could make Aram more balance or fair. At price of almost never seeing champions like Veigar, Lux, ect.
Only advice I can give is to play with a group of friends over VC. Game is negative in chill otherwise, regardless of mode.
The only thing that makes ARAM not fun is Ziggs, Varus, Xerath, ect that has no counterplay where all game you get pushed under your turret and can't do anything but dodge poke for 20 minutes.
Wish the bans were still around, it just makes things so much less frustrating. Even if there are players who don't ban anyone, if I can remove Xerath from ARAM every game, I'd be a lot happier.
