I saw that champs's skills cost are in mana or energy
or fury, flow, heat, health, ferocity, nothing
Riot's been playing around with different resource mechanics.
Concerning Riven though:
Auto-attacks are manaless.
Generally speaking, the play-pattern with manaless champions favors doing things very similar to auto-attacking.
Garen's Spin to Win, Rumble's Flame Spitter, Vladimir's Tides of Blood, Akali's multi-face-dash mark-AA combo, Tryndamere and Aatrox's actual straight-up auto-attacks.
Riven's Broken Wing skill is essentially a %AS auto-attack steroid that moves her forwards a short distance and does AoE damage as well.
At rank 1 and level 1, the 10+40% AD will do 50 damage when her AA is about 56.
with 225 total AD at rank 5 it will do exactly 225 damage just like a normal auto-attack (but cannot crit), and any more AD it will do less than a typical AA.
Even with animation canceling, Riven's REWQQQR+Hydra combo is closer to the sustained direction than burst, at least within the scope of other pure-damage melee champions. Tryndamere can output the same damage come mid/late game in the same time frame with no burst and auto-attacks alone, where someone like
or
with heavier mana-costs can synchronize their entire kit's damage to strike within the same half-second. Almost the same frame.
Beyond burst - mana is also used to gate utility (
) or range (
), of which Riven essentially has neither. She can stun someone the duration of a latency spike at very close range and once every minute she can strike someone at range, but that's it.
HP shield, mini-stun, and move at 550 MS with immunity to slows are certainly solid - especially with moving at 550 while damaging foes, but as someone who essentially AA's all the time - it's not exactly meriting mana-costs more than Aatrox's mini-malphite ultimate or Tryndamere's AoE slow wall spin.
Also if Riven used mana:
