Why the Sudden Popularity of Ghost?

Just a matter of curiosity here! Silver scrub trying to understand the shift in meta.

I've been seeing a lot more ghost lately. Two cases, really:

  1. Champions that used to run flash now running exclusively ghost.
  2. Champions (primarily mid laners) that used to run ignite/barrier/exhaust, but are now running ghost (e.g. Lux with ghost/flash).

Can anyone explain the apparent meta shift here for me?

because ignite is no longer needed to secure kills with such egregious burst currently in the game, so instead ghost creates situations where you survive or secure more kills than ignite ever would.

Because ghost got buffed by an insane amount not to long ago

V6.10 Cooldown reduced to 180 seconds from 210. Movement speed increased to 28% - 45% (based on level) from 27% at all levels.

I remember reading this and shitting myself because this buff is ridiculous

You're welcome.

-edit- with the assassin update now they're good too, feel free to choose between ghost or ignite according to your playstyle, since they have a lot of mobility even to cover long distances i would recommend ignite on them so you can push and go take your free kill bot or top (or call your jungler and go kill the enemy jungler since you have track of him you do right?) but ghost works fine as well.

(Also please, i know that intelligence is not the main asset of a league player, but if you're playing lux/xerath that have A GODDAMN LOT OF RANGE, please, don't go poke the enemy's nose with your ignite because it makes you feel stronger, if range was implemented in their kit, there's a reason, and in a couple of deaths you should have figured it out...)

I play mainly Kayle and Teleport/Flash used to be standard on her for me. One day I tried Teleport/Ghost. Haven't gone back to Flash since. In my opinion, on champions like Kayle and Nasus who apply damage in a sustained manner as opposed to burst, Ghost is far superior. When it comes to securing kills, Ghost is the way to go hands down, it has a very low CD and it counters Flash meaning that even if your opponent Flashes your all-in, you're highly likely to catch him anyway. The only thing Flash does better than Ghost is provide escape since you can get over walls and juke opponents with it. But even so, Ghost is not slouch in providing an escape if you're smart about it.

To be honest, I'm surprised they haven't nerfed it yet. It's definitely one of the most powerful spells in the game. I hope they take forever like they are taking to nerf Graves and Fiora. I love Ghost.

This happened a while ago actually, like mid way through season 7. Ghost got a buff in that it's cool down was reduced so it made a lot more sense to run.

Ghost has barely any cooldown and makes kiting the champion impossible, When a Hecarim or Syndra is running at you that fast you can't stop them from just trampling you.

Ghost also helps escape ganks, if someone ganks you you can just pop ghost and gtfo and there is little they can do. Even late game if you don't have ghost that Syndra or Ryze is just gonna be able to dodge all your stuff and kill you or get out of the fight before you can finish them off.

I was pretty surprised they didn't nerf it yet, it has been extremely oppressive and shoving a large chunk of champions out of the meta.

I dont think people are replacing flash with ghost, but have been seeing more of ghost over ignite in mid lane.

  1. Dodge skillshots to win trades
  2. With invis/camo you're pretty much dead if you cant get away. Lower ghost CD helps w this
  3. Many long range champs where I dont even get into ignite range to trade or kill so I cant use this enough
  4. People dying so fast with redic burst that this isnt even needed to get kills, making it very situational and often sitting unused and wasted
  5. Lately I've been taking teleport or exhaust over ignite and working well since that helps the teamfights significantly.

Higher level when 1 kill is a huge deal its still used since it can be the diff between a kill or someone getting away with trades being so tight, but lower levels where people overstay and cant dodge anything it matters less.
