Having a hard time getting good at this game because of smurfs.

I've been playing for at least a year now, for a while I only played Co-op AI because I was afraid of PVP, but when I finally worked up the courage to play PVP I often got beat down by smurfs. I didn't feel I was making any progress, I only felt like I was just being some sort of amusement. Eventually I moved to ARAM, and I've been playing that ever since. Any time I try Summoners Rift, again, smurfs keep beating me down. I really want to get good at Summoners Rift, but I'm afraid of being humiliated and then chewed out by my teammates over and over and over. Any recommendations on how to get through this?

Are you sure you're actually losing to smurfs? I ask because smurfs aren't really that prevalent all the time. Sure I get a couple games with them but most of the time if my team loses there are legitimate reasons besides smurfs.

All I can say is just play the game. Keep all chat disabled and mute the players thwt are jerks. I have played games where I was completely carrying only to die once and get chewed out. There are players like that.

The only way to get better is play PvP...Yea you may run into smurfs but i know people that are bad at this game and probably could beat you only due to the fact that they PvP more...

The majority of people who play are not smurfs. Believing that smurfs are holding you back is a cop-out.

Well the solution to twinks in WoW was just to not PvP until you got to level 40 or so. But you're at about the equivalent level for this game, and that's not working, so the only suggestion I have is to mute everyone on both teams at the start of every game for a while until your hidden rating gets worked out by the system.

Keep up the courage to play and practice in real games, after all if you don't have the balls to play ranked lol how will you ever get a GF. Doesn't have to be ranked but you need to practice against tough opponents to learn what you're doing wrong. I introduced my brother to LOL about a year ago and he's become a lot better. However he had the same problem with you and hates to play in lane, so he only jungles or supports, but he is good at the game because he put in the time to practice against hard opponents. Also try to duo queue so you have someone to grow your skills with.
