Does Heimer's turrets attack count as an ability? Or is it like a basic attack?

My question is will armor or magic penetration benefit my turret's attack.

Magic Pen

It's a spell. Magic pen and AP will make your turrets hit harder, and they apply spell effects such as Rylai's
