Ranked Needs Team Builder
Team Builder is a great concept that needs further developement and integration into LoL, first let's talk about why.
The biggest reason team builder needs to replace the current way summoners queue is that it helps bridge the disparity between LoL's core concept (team based strategy game) with its most inherent contradiction (the fact that the game is played by the individual). In professional League (the game's penultimate state) you have a top, jungler, support, adc and mid laner and they are played by a top, jungler, support, adc and mid lane player. In solo queue this is not the case, the odds of you getting into a lobby where five strangers just happen to get their main role is extremely slim, this can lead to unfun games, frustration, and toxicity.
I've almost never had a toxic game while playing with team builder and I feel there are several reasons for this. First, when you're in a role you like on a champion that you enjoy playing, even if you're losing, you most often are still having fun. Second, when everyone is playing their main role it also means that the games are more competitive, rarely will you be paired up with someone in an unfimiliar situation (unless they got on team builder to test out a new champ) which means less frustrating blow out games. Third, when you find yourself on your champ you are in your own carry position, that means that you aren't just trying to survive in a role you were forced into while you watch and hope that your team is going to carry you. I feel that the last one can be the most frustrating and the most toxic inducing, watching someone take your role and fail miserably with it while you're just trying not to die in top lane.
With Team Builder every solo queue game becomes a professional style scrim, not a rag tag compromise where a set of players have to be stuffed into a team together with the hope that they'll be compatible.
Now let's talk about how.
Right now team builder has you pick your lane, champion, summoners and runes/masteries before you get into the room, this is mainly what prevents it from having a ranked queue and is also wholly unnecessary. With ranked team builder all you do is pick your lane (or lanes) that you want to play and it the puts you onto your team.
Another time consuming thing about team builder right now is that every member of the team needs to hit "ready" before the game starts. Since it would now have a pick/ban phase clicking "ready" to make sure nobody is AFK would no longer be necessary. Having this lobby system also has the added benefit of being able to boot someone pre-game, if you've got two people arguing over nonsense (or someone with a bad reputation) they can be vote-kicked and forced to requeu, this would just take you to the lobby screen again until that spot was filled. There might be the thought that this would add too much time to getting into game but the only thing it adds is a small period of time where you're in a pre-pick/ban lobby (What would this add? 30 seconds?). Keep in mind the long wait times currently associated with team builder wouldn't exist because it wouldn't be competing with another queue, it would be THE ranked queue.
Let me know what the community thinks and if I'm overlooking a giant flaw in my plan, I really think that Riot should be looking to this as the future of ranked solo queue.
really?
