I'll play anything but mid!

I was playing draft the other day when I realized something. I can have fun playing any role I get filled to... except mid. The only reason I don't just queue for Fill most games is because I have no skill mid lane and don't enjoy the match-ups there. This got me thinking, what if there was the option to do the opposite of queuing for a specific role? What if fill had a secondary box underneath it that made it mean "Put me anywhere EXCEPT THERE" as opposed to just "Put me in one of these two" or "Put me anywhere"

I'm not sure how much it would help with queue times necessarily but I can say it would likely have a large positive impact from just a quality of life perspective as it would allow players to say "I don't care what you give me as long as it's not that" which is, according to the small sample size of my discord server, the typical thoughts when queuing in a group where everyone is pretty okay in most roles.

Let me know what you guys think of this!

ok but it needs to be unusable on support bc thats the point of autofill

i second this, as i refuse to play top

This idea has been tested.

Spoiler Alert! Most players refuse to be filled Support if they can help it.

So the idea was nixed.

Me? I'd rather not ADC.

My roles, from strongest to weakest.

  1. Jungle/Top
  2. Support
  3. Mid
  4. ADC

I would prefer having a personal ranking for each role which we can customise, where the matchmaking system would try to give everyone their most preferred roles.

I have heard too many stories of people having chosen Top/Mid (or any two roles) and they were instead autofilled, while one of the roles they preferred is occupied by another autofill (and sometimes they switch, showing that the matchmaking system failed for both of them).

The new system would check your team's preferences, check all the possible role distributions and somewhat give a score to each one of them based on how satisfied each player should be with their role. The highest score distribution would be the final one and should avoid any role trades between players because of a bad matchmaking system... Of course people can still trade roles, but at least they wouldn't be forced to do it for better role distribution.

I noticed this as well, but it will take a while for them to make any changes to the queue

I for instance, know almost nothing of jungling but can play the other four roles adequately

Riot refuses to do it. It's been asked since ranked rework was on PBE

Mid is my weakest role also. I think for most people who mostly play fill mid will be the least played role.

As others have mentioned it only exacerbates the problem of autofill because support is still the least desired role

riot dose not realize that dynamic Q is something they made to make the game more enjoyable. after they placed auto fill into the equation they negated the positive of dynamic Q. dynamic Q was supposed to give people the role they wanted to make the game better however....... forcing people into support ruins games. the old system wasnt much better. if you were last pick in the old system you got shoe horned into support unless you had the balls that i did. i would tell my team that if they wanted to try that bs on me i would just pick my best available champion and be done with it. i propose an opt out option. if you are ok with waiting for a game so you wont be autofilled that is your right. i would prefer to wait as opposed to getting support. i will play all lanes except support. another idea would be to give incentive to play support. things like blue essence for playing support. even RP in the neighborhood of say 5-10 rp a game for saying yes you will play support. those are my thoughts.

On top of what other people said, there just isn't much to be gained from this feature. Not many people go fill, and those that do can easily enough say something like "Mid is my worst role. Can I trade with anyone?" on the rare occasions when they get their worst role. And it would cost a fair bit to implement (and test) a new rule in the matchmaking system (plus a bit of UI work). It's just not worth Riot's time.

You play bruisers and top lane? Use them on mid. Irelia s being abused there right now meanwhile I use Camille for counterpicking Yasuo or Zed and is optimal against mages. Or use full AP Malphite if ya wanna. xp

While I agree in general that the option would be nice, for you specifically, chance of getting filled mid is about 0.

I usually queue as jg/mid, and gotten mid, I think, once in the last 100 or so games, so go ahead and fill, you should be fine.

Even if this feature were in the game, I'd probably never use it because I can play a few champs in pretty much any role to a decent enough level.
