Ivern Question for Rioters

So I've been playing Ivern and listening to streamers/Pros talk about playing Ivern since the day of his release, I find this champion super interesting and fun to play and have been really enjoying him. I'm bringing a more technical question to you today, because there's been some internal debate amongst my play group about this and I'm not sure how to get a verified answer other than asking a Rioter.

What is the definition of "Killing" a monster in the jungle? Does Ivern's passive count as "killing" those jungle monsters when he "sets them free" (and does he get additional experience from Hunter's Talisman, which reads that "killing monsters grants additional experience)?

I've always been of the philosophy that skipping jungle item on Ivern makes a lot more sense, but I'm not sure if that's still true if Talisman gives you bonus XP. But in the games that I played with Talisman and then without Talisman I couldn't feel an XP difference/leveled the same from camps.
