Mobalytics Insight Analysis: First Objectives vs Win Rate in League of Legends - Mobalytics

Greetings summoners,

I recently did a small project using Riot's API and a visualization tool called Tableau to chart the effects of first objectives on win rate through different tiers from Bronze to Challenger.

It's interactive so you can make the scenario apply to your own cases. My favorite insight in was how Platinum games turn out if they were to lose every single first objective but 7% of 381 games still managed to defeat their odds and win. There are also progressing cases such as either getting first dragon or first tower and adding objectives on top on that with how your win rate would change over time.

Please check it out and let me know what is your favorite insight! Make sure to use the drop-down filters so you can set your cases such as first dragon, first tower, etc.

Although neat (and it's always awesome to see someone take advantage of the API!), I think it's important to point out that correlation <> causation. Just as securing objectives shifts the tide of the game in your favor, so does winning a game enable you to easier secure first objectives.

Totally agree, while this article doesn't aim to have a definite conclusion, it does try to give summoners a tool to explore and interact with data! Thanks for the comment!

Then you look at Rift Herald... Huh. The team with rift herald has a losing average in all brackets...

Hi, you're most likely commenting on the second visualization where all Rift Herald averages are under 50%. Since this visualization is looking at "Average First Objectives Secured for Winning Games", it simply means that less than half of the games secured Rift Herald to win the game.

Now, if you look at the first visualization on "First Objectives vs Win Rate", you could see that win rate for all tiers except Challenger is above 70% when you select "First Rift Herald". Thanks for checking the post out!

ah i see, so the second graph is exclusively if they had got rift herald before anything else, in which case that would be the team who is behind getting a consulation prize.

The bar at 50% doesn't move when you choose an option. So getting first dragon makes the 50% into 60%, but those are under the horizontal black bar so it looks like you're decreasing your chance of winning

The bar is an average of all data but it'd be more appealing visually if it was the 50% mark

Yes, I've thought about this as well. However, I wanted to use the bar to compare the effects of each first objective across every tier. I think that is more interesting than a flat 50% baseline to compare from. Thanks for the comment though, your logic totally makes sense.

I feel it. This is honestly cool to see. I know getting a first drag doesn't necessarily increase your chance of winning, for example, and it's more accurate to say the team that is already going to win gets the first dragon because they're winning. But, you can kind of see what objectives weigh more than others. And if nothing else, it's definitely interesting. So kudos
